Awesome Game :: Ruined by Microsoft

  • Love this game. Truly do. I just can't help but thinking how much better it would be had it been released through Steam. Yes, I know with cross-play this isn't possible, I just hope everyone at Rare realizes how much the decision to use the Microsoft store has tainted their game. There is no excuse whatsoever for such an atrociously asinine and counter-intuitive process to purchase, install, and play this game. Nor is there any excuse for download times. I understand it's crowded right now, but I haven't seen download times like this since I was 14 and trying to download naughty pictures on my 14.4 kbs modem. Every. Single. Issue. I've had with this game in closed beta and alpha has been attributed to either the Xbox Insider app or Microsoft Store. Such as shame. I hope selling your souls to get an Xbox Exclusive title was worth it.

  • @olric-forstner my thoughts exactly

Uh, really doubt Rare had any say in the matter whatsoever. seeing as how they're owned by Microsoft.

First party Microsoft game goes on the Microsoft store. For better or worse.

  • @the-lion-turtle That's a shame. I've never experienced such a terrible system for putting a game on my computer. This is my first Microsoft Store game ... and definitely my last. Thank god the game is so good.

  • @sojunamja That's your prerogative :D

  • @sojunamja I agree that the microsoft store and the App-system in Win10 has its faults every now and then, it can be quite annoying at times.
But hoping that a MS-Company uses other platforms then the MS-owned ones for their new games is "very optimistic".

  • @sirliborius I agree. I understand the reasoning. But hey ... Age of Empires is on Steam, right? :)

  • I played on xbox and had absolutely no problem. It worked perfect all the time. But im awere of other people complaining about issues. In your case, its more usefull if you report all bad things on MS store. This feedback can help for future improvement. Hope you did that.

  • @sojunamja While Steam is nice, it's by no means necessary, and you people need to quit the whining. It won't do anyone any good if Steam becomes the ONLY platform on PC worth releasing to, because competition encourages improvement. Yes, MS Store isn't as cool as Steam but with a bit of support they will iron out the kinks.

Not sure what exactly you found to be counter-intuitive though, since it's basically the very same as on steam.. open the storefront, blick buy, enter your info... click install.. wait.. click play.

  • Do you want some cheese to go with the wine?
And you can play cross platform with steam. .im forced to play WT with ps4 scrubs all the time and hate every second of it but its there non the less.
If you dont like Microsoft so much then dont buy and xbox,a pc, or pretty much anything gaming related. That will teach them.

Good point, i didn't realize that.
But still it's a rarity, was this maybe released on Steam before Win10 came out with its own app store?

  • @sojunamja What utter rubbish. Cross play is more important than Steam and the truly atrocious 'support' you get from them.

Having bought games on Xbox store and Microsoft store I have litteraly no clue what you are complaining about. As much as I hate Microsoft and what they stand for, and how much I blame them for the utterly shoddy bug on the first beta test stopping people playing the game, there is really nothing to complain about here.

  • what exactly are you moaning about? you literally just buy the game and click install on the xbox store. it's as simple as that. maybe try NOT huffing paint beforehand, right?

  • frankly I'm tired of people acting like Steam is the end all be all of digital games distribution anyway. 75% of the indie titles they greenlight are utter trash, it's bogged down with dumb, worthless st such as "trading cards" and redundant achievements, the workshop management is horrendous and contrived. Steam is a nice way to buy games you actually want and have them all in one spot, and it has decent social features, other than that it's a pile of st program that looks exactly the way it did 8 years ago and runs the same.

  • @sojunamja Age of Empires has no crossplay, which wouldn't work here if the game was released on steam.

  • @sojunamja Age of Empires is just a PC game and the last one is over a decade old. Sea of Thieves is Xbox game base with added PC play. That is why it is not on steam and never will be. And who is to say that the new Age of Empires 4 will only be available on Microsoft store?

  • i'd like to say thank you to microsoft for bring this to xbox.

  • Why is it being on the Windows Store such an issue? It's a hassle to get the game now because it's in beta...when the game releases all people need to do is buy it, download it then click the icon on their desktop to start it. How is that an issue?

  • @sojunamja If not Microsoft this game probably wouldn't exist.

  • The Windows Store is pretty poor a lot of the time.

However, the game wouldn't exist without MS, by definition. I have no opinion on this, it's more just your logic is a bit weird. 'Selling of souls' happened a long, long time ago...

  • I agree, Microsoft is the single biggest flaw with this game. I know of several people who have refused to buy it because of that reason.

  • @sojunamja

Je suis aussi d'accord, c'est incroyablement compliqué pour juste une installation je suis pas pro Steam mais regardé Fortnite avec Epic Game. faite votre propre Launcher et oublier Microsoft ...

  • I want to preface this by stating I'm not saying these things don't happen, I've seen these complaints enough that I believe they're valid.

However, I built a very nice PC a few years ago, it's no powerhouse now, but it's decent, I have 100mbps download, 10mpbs upload, and have never had these issues downloading anything at all from the Windows Store. I'm sorry guys, but I have no earthly idea what you're talking about. Installing stuff from the Windows Store is no different than downloading from GoG, Steam, or just downloading desktop apps for me.

  • @cwarrick66 And if you don't put it in offline mode before leaving on your long trip with no internet. Good luck launching your games.

Oh BTW Steam called: you need to update your client.

  • A "great" game that is ruined by microsoft, although MS published, marketed and funded it. Brilliant logic.

  • It's cool to pick on Microsoft these days. I have yet to have a single issue downloading or playing any games from the Store on my PC.

  • Haters gonna hate. I love that it's cross play with pc and xbox. I can play with friends I wouldn't otherwise be able to. Sure they're doing microtransactions because microsoft likely wanted it and that's what I really expected the thread to be about. I had no problem downloading and installing the game but I understand some people have problems with that. In the grand scheme of things, that's a non-issue though. Once it's installed, it's done and you can play. It's not like No Mans Sky where there are STILL people who can't play (on top of other problems).

My client is perfectly up to date. Hell, it updates every time I turn my computer. My library is 140+ deep, with my oldest purchase dating back to 2008. I'm certainly not new to steam. It still looks and feels like s**t. Bottom line.

  • We are good without Steam. I bought Fable Fortunes in the MS Store and will certainly buy the next Age of Empire through it. Yes it’s hard to find stuffs compared to MS Store on Xbox, but provide feedback or vote for existing one.

  • Feeling the love here :) Don’t bite my head off for what editors at Rock Paper Shotgun and PC Gamer have also complained about. It’s a valid issue which is ridiculous and inexcusable. This is probably the most fun I’ve had playing a game in more than 10 years ... it’s just an awesome game. I’m not hating on the game, I’m whining (with extra cheese) on what I, and many others, feel is an issue that shouldn’t exist.

  • The MS shop on PC needs to improve? Yes, definitely.
But we also do not need to be a "Steam p**p" either, keep feeding it, it does not help at all.
I use Steam but if MS in the future offers me all Xbox titles on PC I do not doubt it.
Anyone who encounters problems with the store sends feedback and we hope MS will start working on it at once!

  • Steam is the best platform by far but it can dig into profits quite a bit. MS store is pretty meh but it opens up the PC and console market. Not to mention we have cross platform as a result which is very welcoming, especially if you have any console friends.

  • I never has problems with MS W10Store

  • It's very fashionable to hate Microsoft, and for most people that is the only reason they hate Microsoft.
