Simple idea, instead of a rank that accumulates over time, have ranks that represent a players level of performance. This could be based on your average earnings with a guild over the last week or month. It adds a lot more importance to rank. It should not be a competitive ranking either, compared to other players performance. Instead it should just be performance based rank. There could still be separate leaderboards.
Secondly, Captains. Just another shallow idea but it migth be nice for captains to have a little more power onboard, and give them a review system. These naturally are heavily abused and so should only be accessable to players who have played atleast 15 minutes with that captain, possibly more. They can quickly review elements such as democracy, adventure, teamwork and leadership under this captians command. It could create one of those star graph things.
Then have an option that allows players to pay each other at the captains table. This would allow players to pay their own crews to convince people to sail under their flag, maybe eventually building enough respect to crew their ship for free.
This really stems from the idea that 3/4 people online just suck, a statistic i've drawn from many years of online play and that's putting it lightly. One person with all the important powers and a review system for that person when acting as captain could be interesting. What yall think? Captain should have control of the brig, the quest chosen (voting still takes place but captain can override or gets 2 votes), and maybe gets a parrot or something.
It's just that a big part of the piracy theme to me seems to be captains, and the game doesn't really seem to have captains at the moment beyond a technical title. Maybe i'm wrong though, i've only watched videos so far.
