Representative Ranks and Captain ranks.

  • Simple idea, instead of a rank that accumulates over time, have ranks that represent a players level of performance. This could be based on your average earnings with a guild over the last week or month. It adds a lot more importance to rank. It should not be a competitive ranking either, compared to other players performance. Instead it should just be performance based rank. There could still be separate leaderboards.

Secondly, Captains. Just another shallow idea but it migth be nice for captains to have a little more power onboard, and give them a review system. These naturally are heavily abused and so should only be accessable to players who have played atleast 15 minutes with that captain, possibly more. They can quickly review elements such as democracy, adventure, teamwork and leadership under this captians command. It could create one of those star graph things.

Then have an option that allows players to pay each other at the captains table. This would allow players to pay their own crews to convince people to sail under their flag, maybe eventually building enough respect to crew their ship for free.

This really stems from the idea that 3/4 people online just suck, a statistic i've drawn from many years of online play and that's putting it lightly. One person with all the important powers and a review system for that person when acting as captain could be interesting. What yall think? Captain should have control of the brig, the quest chosen (voting still takes place but captain can override or gets 2 votes), and maybe gets a parrot or something.

It's just that a big part of the piracy theme to me seems to be captains, and the game doesn't really seem to have captains at the moment beyond a technical title. Maybe i'm wrong though, i've only watched videos so far.

  • With the hole captain idea, I don't think it would work the way we would all hope, plus there is never like set roles, the captain can switch out at any time. Although it's a cool concept, you have to think would players stick to it, yes some would, many wouldn'.

    The rank idea:
I like the fact that there will be an overall level, shows how much time and effort you've put into the game. But the idea of having a separate rank that would change, Example is like reputation is pretty cool. You could have at the end of the month, the most wanted pirate on like wanted posters around outposts. The richest pirate. Most deadly, just things like that to engage the player base a bit more.

  • read the news articles that came out today. Ship Captaincy is already confirmed, however not for the Galleon and Sloop, only once you reach Pirate Legend Status and get your your own ship (in the first content update 3 months after release)

  • @kdm Having a ship requires someone to be a captain, being a captain requires you to have a ship in SoT. Influence and reputation will most definitely come into play when a Captain is appointed, if needed. However some will naturally fill this role as it comes naturally to them, some crews will look to a certain someone, you get my drift.

Ranks are cool and it makes sense. This all ties into Rare's "Golden Age of Piracy" & "Pirate Legend." Achievements are going to be in the game I hope, this way it will show an individuals feats of piracy throughout the world, enabling other pirates to be in awe of a certain pirate lord..

Furthermore on ranks, Ranks in my opinion will be a way of showing commitment, neither will it show that a player is superior or better than anyone in anyway shape or form.

I didn't see this, whereabouts did you read this @theAmadox ?

I like the sound of it, achieve something to be considered a captain, later on in the games life cycle.

  • Yes, I know you can dedicate someone to being a Captain. But what I'm saying is, the game doesn't just set you a role and you have to follow it. If you want to change captain midway through play session you can.

  • Connoiseur

  • The game as it exists now seems deliberately designed to de-emphasize such things. There is supposed to be accessibility and ease of pairing people that might have played hundreds of hours with someone just starting or new and still making for a fun and productive game.

The line about a % of the population "sucking" is telling. Maybe the current setup is actually designed to weed out THAT mentality and type of player, instead of the other way around.
