Wait, so how does ship customization work between more than one person? (updated)

  • @mysticdragon297 said in Wait, so how does ship customization work between more than one person?:

i mean, does each player have there own custom ship, or does each crew have their own custom ship?
do you spawn in with your ship and you are the only one that can customize it?
if you are in a party with 4 people, what determines who's ship will be sailed in the world?
will the ships owner be the only one that can customize it? is the ships owner technically the captain?
can any member of the crew just place whatever they want on the boat? would that create some kind of conflict to decide what the crew's ship should look like?

i dont know about you guys, but the main reason im concerned about this is because i know what i want my ship to look like, but i dont want a random crew mate to just ruin the style of the ship, forcing me to place everything back the way it was (and possibly pay for it with my own gold).

You don't like the idea of having people with most gold have more power? I think it makes sense. The person with the most gold gets to choose what the ship looks like because they can afford it. I think there will be a voting system at the start that chooses the captain who chooses the ship details. But then the captain can let anyone else steer the ship. If you played DELETED the captain can kick anyone off the steering wheel by pressing E or F on the steering wheel.

My guess would be that you either start with the captains ship, or a blank ship. The captains ship would make more sense.

From there, every player can make changes to the ship from their own chest of available customisations.

Rare have built a co-operative game where they have trusted players to work together. It makes logical sense to me that they would trust players to co-operatively customise the ship.

Players could then show off cool things they’ve earned, and keep dynicamically change the ship as they go (or at least at the shipwright)

Most likely this. Upgrades would be obvious, whoever has the coolest/best throw it on, let's check it out. Who has the killer livery?

Most likely done at the shipwright, dockside.

"afore ye set sail on yer maiden voyage."

Agreed, it makes sense at the shipwright. There’s a risk of some sneaky business if people can keep changing the appearance of their ships.

  • I figured it would work like your clothes, each pirate has customization in their locker so to speak and can load them to a ship when you start, different ones for different quests and such. That way no one pirate picks a ship its a group effort that should be decided before you sail each time.

  • @apocacide
I think it's random. I've played with the same group on most of alpha sessions and it was always random. Sometimes we had to restart the game several times and captain role was switching around.

  • @mysticdragon297 They've mentioned in a video that anyone in the crew can customise the ship and there is a certain area they'd stand in to show they're customising. I think a better way to go about it is for everyone to have their own ship and, upon crew creation, choose a Captain who's ship will be used. The Captain can then decide whether to let other crew members to customise or not.

  • @cryptic-ophion I linked that video above, but here it is again

This is picks up right where he is talking about it.

I think your option of people picking the ship they like from everyone's personal ship would be worse than the system it sounds like they are going with because if you don't have all the parts of the ship you want but together you could have them all there would be no way to combine them. If the crew is picking together, why not pick from the parts of all of the crew. I'd rather not have to wait until I can afford to buy a whole set of parts (which has got to be at least 4-5 pieces) to be able to have a cool looking ship. If I have a great wheel and you have the matching sail why wouldn't we want to work together?

  • @erikinthebakery But that is simply overcome by having permanent crews. Once a crew is created and captain/ship chosen, you can all decorate (note I previously mentioned the captain can choose whether fellow members can customise). With a permanent crew - which is easily implemented, just like say how BO2 had permanent league teams - you can all work together to customise a ship. If you're with a different crew, then you're with a new ship and it works the same way with anyone customising. Your post acts as if I'm against everyone contributing to editing it or that it somehow becomes impossible - you just tick a box and you can customise, just like voting to put someone in the brig.
Without the system, the alternative appears to be to customise your ship from scratch every single time you join a new server or crew, which seems unnecessarily tedious.

  • @cryptic-ophion A lot of people have been against the idea that everyone can contribute, my post was directed at the concept, not you and particular.

The permanent crew idea is interested, I'm not sure how I feel about it but then I am one who moves from crew to crew a lot. I realize that is not everyone's experience.

From the beta, where we had to redo our character cosmetics every log in, I don't think it would be that tedious. If you are playing with the same people all of the time, you'd all know what selections you wanted and could probably have it done in at most 60 seconds.

  • @snoweffigy almost agreed, sure it makes sense, but I'd like an option to change sails/flags while sailing.

For all possible customizations, moreover, I think they should take time and involve the crew, like repairing the ship with planks. That way, the ship would be more vulnerable for a given amount of time...

  • From what I have deduced from my observations, it appears as though the "host" of the crew or solo player will be able to decorate their captain's quarters (as mentioned in a video concerning their photo system, I believe the end of closed beta video). From there I would assume the "host's" customization of the captain's quarters would be utilized.

I don't think there will be any leadership involved. I don't see Rare handling things this way in this game.
I have the feeling a crew spawns with a stock ship any time it joins a new server, and everyone can customize any part of the ship using the corresponding box (within the limit of parts each individual unlocked). The box will certainly be located at the NPC on outpost's dock (the one with the hammer).

there is leadership though, in the game the "leader" of the group had the wheel next to their name. I'm sure it's just for the sake of instancing, though.

  • Maybe it will work as the voyage vote.
Someone propose an alteration and if it's voted my the majority it will change.

  • update

news has been revealed. in general, the game will feature boat ownership among a crew, not one player. once you unlock or pay for parts, they are yours to keep forever, as clothing is to your character. the ship you or your crew owns will last as long as your play session, meaning that once a boat sinks, it re-spawns with all cosmetics it had before it sunk.

there are still some things that are unlclear though. such as:

    • will there be one person in charge of customizing a boat or can the entire crew customize the same boat?
    • are all cosmetics shared among a crew or will we have to place the cosmetics we own on the boat ourselves. for example, one crewmate has red sails, and the other has blue. will the entire crew automatically have red and blue sails available?
    • what if a player leavs the crew? will all cosmetics to which that player owned and placed on the ship reset automatically or upon the next ship re-spawn (or at all)?
  • @mysticdragon297 I can't see how question 1 would work with one person deciding game mechanic-wise, but that doesn't stop the crew from saying "Hey Dragon, show us what you got"
Question 2&3 become even more interesting when you factor the possibilities of legendary pirates hiding in a non-legendary crew. For question 2, I kind of hope that we have to add our customizations individually because if I'm trying to hide some of the stuff I have I would not want it broadcast around so freely.
