Wait, so how does ship customization work between more than one person? (updated)

  • i mean, does each player have there own custom ship, or does each crew have their own custom ship?
do you spawn in with your ship and you are the only one that can customize it?
if you are in a party with 4 people, what determines who's ship will be sailed in the world?
will the ships owner be the only one that can customize it? is the ships owner technically the captain?
can any member of the crew just place whatever they want on the boat? would that create some kind of conflict to decide what the crew's ship should look like?

i dont know about you guys, but the main reason im concerned about this is because i know what i want my ship to look like, but i dont want a random crew mate to just ruin the style of the ship, forcing me to place everything back the way it was (and possibly pay for it with my own gold).

    update

news has been revealed. in general, the game will feature boat ownership among a crew, not one player. once you unlock or pay for parts, they are yours to keep forever, as clothing is to your character. the ship you or your crew owns will last as long as your playsesion, meaning that once a boat sinks, it re-spawns with all cosmetics it had before it sunk.

there are still some things that are unlclear though. such as:

    • will there be one person in charge of customizing a boat or can the entire crew customize the same boat?
    • are all cosmetics shared among a crew or will we have to place the cosmetics we own on the boat ourselves. for example, one crewmate has red sails, and the other has blue. will the entire crew automatically have red and blue sails available?
    • what if a player leavs the crew? will all cosmetics to which that player owned and placed on the ship reset automatically or upon the next ship re-spawn (or at all)?

  • The current answer to this is... we have no clue.

We might find out on Feb 13th when more stuff about the game is published. We might not find out until launch. Or we might not find out until the rumored open beta between now and release.

  • The only hint we've had is a mention in a previous livestream that implied it was a group effort.

Curious, though... how can you know what you want you ship to look like if you've never seen the customization options?

  • you can probably customize each of the ships individually and the person who is the "leader" of the group is the ship the crew uses.

There's some clues for the available styles. The clothing sets you already know in the game will likely have a ship set aswell, for example bilge rat. If you watch the developer videos you'll see some of the customization options on the galleon.

^ This. I would assume the same thing. Whom ever has the leader position (the gamertag with the crown symbol on the starting screen) is who’s ship is going to be spawned in.

However, this is only speculation and should be taken as such.

  • @avirex-idyll makes me curious, I don't recall seeing an option to change the leader of the crew.. I would imagine the ship wouldn't change until it's scuttled or otherwise sunk, though.

  • as for the customization being a group effort.. I don't see why that would make any sense with all the upgrades being cosmetic. if it were a matter of actually upgrades, I could see like a certain crew member bringing upgraded cannons to the table that you couldn't otherwise use. but that's not that case with this game.

  • @cwarrick66 I would assume that the only way to change the leader would invole everyone logging out and being reinvite back by a new leader, thus logging in the new leaders ship. Again, this is only speculating from what information we have from the beta.

I am sure we will be getting new information within the upcoming days.

I wondered this. I reckon it'll either be that the host of the part "owns" the ship customisation, or everyone will be able to customise. The latter could be chaotic, whilst the former could mean that you never get to see your changes if you keep joining other parties. Really interested to see how this works.

Either way, my crew will probably take turns nominating someone as "owner" so that we all get to show off our cool unlocks.

you can probably customize each of the ships individually and the person who is the "leader" of the group is the ship the crew uses.

I also believe that how will be, i hope to see a vote for who is the "capitan" in the crew menu. During the beta the "capitan" was always assigned randomly during the "start matchmaking" also with a premade of four.

  • all i'm hoping is that the ship customizations are more than just color and different logos on the sails. I want my ship to have a different silhouette on the horizon, to make it really stand out.

  • you can probably customize each of the ships individually, and then each pirate votes for wich customization will be applied. ( like we vote for the quests)
if there is equal votes ( like 2v2), no customisation is applied until one is chosen.

  • I don't think there will be any leadership involved. I don't see Rare handling things this way in this game.
I have the feeling a crew spawns with a stock ship any time it joins a new server, and everyone can customize any part of the ship using the corresponding box (within the limit of parts each individual unlocked). The box will certainly be located at the NPC on outpost's dock (the one with the hammer).

  • According to the stream any member of the group can change the look of the ship. Good luck random groups! I'm certain the ship will spawn together with you like in beta, let's not hope that or matchmaking will change. Probably the thick lady with the hammer at the docs is responsible for ship cosmetics.

  • I think there would be a vote mechanic for the customization of the ship. But I wounder how they will do it.
They had a good and immersive way for the voyages. You throw your dagger on the Map you vote for.

Could there be something similar to the ship customization?

I highly doubt it. It would be a bit overkill for something as "unimportant" as that.

  • @aenima123
I don't think it's that unimportant since this game lives of customization features.

  • @mysticdragon297 @UnivalveWolf976

I've said all along that I'm really looking forward to owning my own ship and customising it the way I'd want to, having to vote or share those customisations isn't something I'd be keen to see.

I don't think it would be practical to vote or 'share' a ship because I'm often sailing with different crews who have different tastes and play styles. It will be very interesting to hear more information around this!

it's not random, it's whoever has the best connection, i play with the same 3 guys and it was always the guy who lives downtown next to the police station, always

Then, if is true, i will never be the capitan 😭

  • I found the bit in the progression stream where they talk a little about this and it seems pretty clear Mike Chapman is saying it is a crew-based event, not based on any "captain" role.

    https://youtu.be/FtgA1nSYCGQ?t=2092

  • I am only speculating on my understanding of progression and my hopes.

@cwarrick66 this is not what i think they mean by horizontal progression.

Horizontal progression means that any upgrades also downgrades so you move along a scale rather than up it, cosmetic progression would not be progression but simply rewards or obtained through other means. I suspect that the cosmetic only options will be micro transactions where as the horizontal progression will be obtained in game.

What we know is there are upgrades available there was one purchasable in the Beta. The blunderbuss sacrifices range for damage however I personally think it needs to have a better balance.

  • @avirex-idyll It’s half a wheel isn’t it, rather than a crown? I could be wrong

  • @mysticdragon297 My wild (but pretty reasonable) guess:

Every player will have their own ship customizations. When you form a crew, the captain's ship is used for the entire crew.

  • Could be.
    Should be.
    Probably, Possibly, maybe, most likely.
-at this very moment these are all of what we want to, or think, may happen. But truely; we continue to sit in the dark till’ Rare glares their Gleaming Revealing beam upon us with glorious Awesomesauce. Until that happens; I’ll be out in the middle of nowhere in Davy Jones locker- licking stonecrabs

and chasing thine ship as she glides across sand-dunes til’ one-of-you-blokes find’s me.

I miss the Sea, slightly losing my mind; I’ll carry on having conversations with myself about who should have the last peanut.

Rare, make me a pioneer pretty please? I’m losing my brain.

  • My guess would be that you either start with the captains ship, or a blank ship. The captains ship would make more sense.

From there, every player can make changes to the ship from their own chest of available customisations.

Rare have built a co-operative game where they have trusted players to work together. It makes logical sense to me that they would trust players to co-operatively customise the ship.

Players could then show off cool things they’ve earned, and keep dynicamically change the ship as they go (or at least at the shipwright)

  • @snoweffigy uhhhhh, maybe. I thought it looked like a crown....

  • @avirex-idyll My good sir, you call it whatever you like. It will always be Boaty McBoatface to me.

  • @snoweffigy LOL. ok, that works. Either way. I am curious to see how this plays out and how each of us within our respected crews will be able to show off our personalized ships.

  • The way I'd like to see it implemented is whoever has the best connection gets their ship spawned. However if that player doesn't want to risk their ship sinking because of penalties or whatever reason, then that player can store their ship with the shipright and another player can spawn their ship in.

Most likely this. Upgrades would be obvious, whoever has the coolest/best sails, harpoon gun, or figurehead? Throw it on, let's check it out.
Ships livery is said to come in sets. Like the "bilge rat" and "admiral" set of gear.
A fully decked out "kraken hunter" would likely need several components.

Most likely done at the shipwright, dockside.

"afore ye set sail on yer maiden voyage."

  • As with everyone else I'm just guessing but i would hope everyone gets their own ship. You either choose the boat to put out on(like voting for a voyage), or you put out on the ship of the captain.

  • Ima hoping like other elements of SoT we get to vote on the ship we like best when in "Lobby", but I could also it be a grab bag of the all the parts the crew has collected to this point and you & crew design/customize you ship each session. (That could get old quickly tho...)

  • @rgbknights I can't imagine that this wouldn't be done in game, likely at the Shipwright. Wouldn't you want to be able to use a cool new piece you won right away?
