Got a few suggestions my group chat have thrown around lately. Some have been posted but I wanted to throw all my ideas into one big post.
ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS:
-
Bottled Treasure Maps
It would be cool if when exploring islands or shipwrecks, you could find voyages in the form of messages/maps in a bottle. This way, you don't have to purchase every voyage, and scouring every island you come across can benefit you. -
Mineral Collection/Possible Crafting
Islands need more things going on. Fruit should be found on trees, and be able to be collected and placed into crates, and once filled (Say, 10-12 of a fruit type) it becomes a tradeable item to either the Merchants Guild, or maybe in the mines, ore or gem veins could be found and mined and collected in a similar vein, and they can be turned into a different faction or NPC to maybe earn different cosmetics. (Say you need to collect a crate of emeralds, iron, and pomegranates turned into them to create a red-dyed jeweled cutlass) -
Tavern Games!
This one has absolutely been suggested a million times, but I would absolutely kill to see card or dice games implemented into the game. Stopping off at a tavern after a voyage and starting a calm game of poker or liars dice, maybe gambling a bit of gold with your pals, or maybe you meet some nearby passive folk and want to duel with your cards not weapons. -
Fishing!
Yet again, another commonly suggested activity. Only comments I could add to this is that A; we could collect amounts of raw fish in the way I suggested above with other materials, and turn them into either Merchants or maybe a new Fisher's guild. B; Having fish as extra items could create the opportunities for more consumables for health, speed, etc. -
Worldwide Collectibles
This may be something already planned for the game, who knows. But every island should definitely have some kind of hidden collectible sort of item or two to encourage searching every last inch of each island. Maybe they're something simple like a cursed Piece of Eight, a rare mysterious gem in the vein of Stones of Berenziah from Skyrim, or maybe some kind of magical tome that gives insight into the hidden world and magic of the Sea of Thieves.
COSMETIC SUGGESTIONS
-
Trinkets!
One small cosmetic idea with enormous possibility is trinkets your pirate wears either around their neck, or their waist. Maybe exploring you could find a fancy jeweled amulet, or killing enough skeletons you can wear a skeleton bone around your hip to show off your prowess -
Wearing equipment on your person
I've suggested this before, but it would be awesome if you could choose a few things to be visible on your pirate at all times unless they were equipped. Such as the Eye of Reach being on your back, pistol at your hip, and compass on your belt. This way you don't just have to have items held to show off your fancy cosmetics. -
Displaying cosmetics in captains quarters
This is one of my personal favorite small things. Say you earn a really fancy pistol from defeating the kraken, but you really really like a different model of the pistol, so you put up your hard-earned reward in a display case for anyone that comes to your crew to see, and you can still use your favorite one. Or, vice versa even.
GAMEPLAY SUGGESTIONS:
-
Various Gameplay Items
There needs to be a bit more reasoning for exploration and killing skeletons apart from just cosmetics and "findables". There needs to be some gameplay involved here. My suggestion is, instead of random hidden treasure chests on islands, maybe there could also be useful tools found instead. Maybe hidden in the caves you find a Bronze Skeleton Key, capable of opening a Castaways chest, and you could find higher levels of them to open rarer chests, or stockpile them and trade them into the gold diggers for a massive reputation increase and no gold. This way, you can risk taking the treasure chest AND key back to them for tons of rep + gold, or play on the safe side and instead of risking running back to an outpost, you crack open a few chests while still at sea. Maybe you get less gold this way, but there is the opportunity of having a cosmetic item from some kind of set inside the chests. Same goes for finding say, some sort of magical item that lets you dispel the soul of pirate captains skulls, providing the same style bonus for the Order of Souls as well. -
"Cursed" items.
Along with the above suggestion, maybe you could find "Cursed items" that alter your progression for a time frame. Say you find a Cursed Shovel, that doubles the speed of digging, but can only be used X number of times. Or you find a Cursed Pistol that vastly increases your damage, but disappears after all 5 shots are used, and all sorts of extra variants of all the items. -
Ship Restock, Repair, Respawn etc
From now on, when a ship is sunk, whatever materials were on board at the time need to remain static, and barrels dumped to sea for your enemy to claim.Newly respawned ships on Non-outpost islands need to spawn without ANY materials. You should not be able to suicide run whoever sunk you over and over until you eventually whittle them down and sink them. It's broken and a bit unfair. After being sunk, you should have to run around and restock from your island, or return to an outpost. Along with that, the shipwright needs to provide the opportunity to restock a ship to the standard amount, and to be able to completely remove holes from a ship. This way, you can't just give up on an empty ship and sink it for a free restock. There needs to be a tiny amount of sacrifice once you lose your vessel. -
Different Alcohols
Pirates deserve to have a larger selection of brews than just grog, and they need to provide more. Grog needs to be the standard, gets you drunk decently quick, and needs to heal a slight amount (Say a glass is about as much as a banana), this way you can "top off" your health from a small fall without wasting an entire banana. Along with this, maybe other alcohols can provide vastly different bonuses. Drinking rum could increase your digging speed for a time frame but get you drunker faster, Ale could provide a speed buff, and wine could provide a larger healing, but be far more limited (Maybe only found hidden away on islands, or cost more?), and the tavern barmaid should be able to stock your ship with one or two choices down below. -
Shipwrecks Despawning
Right now, Shipwrecks seem to stay forever even if they've been picked clean. My suggestion would be that once all chests onboard are cleared and no pirates are within a grid space, shipwrecks should sink back under and despawn and a new one should spawn elsewhere.
Alright. That's it for now. I love this game and I want nothing for it to succeed so this is just a bunch of stuff that I think would make the game better and create a stronger gameplay loop and more things to "strive for".
Thanks for Listening.
