Want your opinion about the following idea: Ships who dock at outposts cannot be destroyed

  • I want you pirates' opinion about the idea that ships who dock at an outpost cannot be destroyed. Let me quickly explain:

    • You sail to an outpost and park you boat near a dock for example. Even if another boat would sail by and shoot cannons at your boat, this would do nothing. This because your ship cannot be destroyed because you are docked at an outpost.

    • However. While your ship may be safe, your cargo on the boat (banana, chests etc) are not. Other players can still steal these items if they want to.

    • And if another boat comes into the outpost harbor and see you running with a chest, they can still kill you.

    • This would also push players more to using close combat (sword, pistols etc) then just using cannons to sink boats.

    • And it would be nice to at least have your boat stay in one piece at an outpost.

So to summarize it. When you dock at on outpost your ship is safe from being damaged by other ships BUT you as a player and your cargo is NOT safe.

What do you guys think? :)

  • If you can still raid the ship of resources then i must say whats the point of docking? Youll likely come back to an empty ship...in which case atm a respawn is the better solution.

Now, if you want to dock you ship and make it inaccessible I think that would be fine, however once docked, everything is locked down so you cant dock and unload booty, youll need to remain "active".

  • @yualee Agree, but at the outpost you should be in a safezone. No one can kill you or steal your chests. Pirate harbours was usually a safe haven gor all pirates. Aaarghhh

  • @aprovoked-mango @GhostShadowXIII

I would like the outposts to be complete safe points but due to all the negative comments and toxicity I have read regarding safe points, I was just to scared to write that down :(

  • I understand your point.
It cannot work for many reasons, but don't be afraid to have a voice

  • @mzargothekhajit

I'll try. Just don't want a group of people starting to flame me for my opinion/thought about the game :(

  • I don't think they need to be safe havens, rather there needs to be consequences for attacking in an outpost. In the pirate world, pirates typically attacked merchant ships and other ships, not other pirates. So one solution could be having NPC Merchant ships, some of which may be protected by naval ships..etc. Gives other targets to attack and in some cases a ship may have a number of protecting ships so teaming up might be necessary to attack.

This partly solves the problem since it gives other targets. The solution to outposts would be to have NPC pirates on the outpost who attack any pirates that attack others. And some sort of reputation system. This would in essence make outposts safe zones, without making them completely safe.

This isn't the first game to have pvp and deal with players who only want to attack others.. There's a lot of possible solutions.

  • @maytrix

This sounds like a possible solution. Thank you for adding to the post!

  • Simple... no!

  • Well the thing with this idea is that it is still a pirate game so I don’t think you should be able to have a safe space at a outpost but maybe if you just spawned in and you should have a grace period.

  • i am against an indestructible ship,, wouldnt be realistic to have such a thing, but having a reputation system to make killing in (one?) outpost a possible thing, but, with conséquence, is already discussed in this thread :
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/28281/how-to-fix-the-pve-pvp-conflict/16

    everyone welcome. :)

  • This is being covered extensively all over the forums, but let me summarize:

    • There are more outposts on the map than ships. Even if every other ship is hiding at an outpost waiting for you, that leaves two outposts empty for your use.
    • If you're observant no one can hide at an outpost. You can easily spot any masts near an outpost, plus if they've scuttled or sent their ship away with a crewmate, there will be a mermaid floating there, trying to help them get back to it. So, if you see no ships, but a mermaid is in the water, expect an ambush. Your choice to meet it in force, sneak around to another approach, or simply sail to a safer outpost.
    • The only real value to a ship is its supplies. So, if you make supplies steal-able, but the ship itself unsinkable, what purpose are you serving? Is swimming 30 feet to the mermaid that much of a trial? To my mind, having magically unsinkable ships at an outpost kind of breaks the setting without actually accomplishing anything.

There are three places you find tension and conflict in this game, two ships searching the same island, fight-happy crews chasing ships at sea, and two ships trying to use the same outpost. A safe haven approach to outposts would remove half the "choke-point" conflicts in the game, and I just don't see them doing that.

  • The only thing I think that needs to be done is respawn rework. If you kill a crew and sink their ship they should get one respawn that's where their ship was. After that they spawn on their ship. That is the only thing that got me with PvP. People just respawn and keep swimming to your ship while you loot their chests. Oh and make the ships spawn farther away.

  • No place on the map should be absolutely safe. You could have a central meeting point island guarded by NPCs, which I've advocated many times, or your home outpost could have an NPC cannooner or two(like some of the skeleton islands) that would fire on anyone but you. I'd be fine with that, but if someone is skilled enough to get through all that and still kill you/steal your stuff, then hats off to them. That's the way I'd like to see it, personally.

Never fear about having a voice, despite the recent uproar the forum has been a friendly place.

Im personally against outposts being safe zones. The way I see it if "you" foolishly dock up with another ship on the island, its on "you" if you can unload safely or not, even when youre being chased you can always sail by an outpost, jump off with a chest and catch a mermaid back to the ship - rinse and repeat if necessary. Even throughout this beta I have yet to be in a situation where im getting screwed at an outpost by campers etc. Ive just not seen it and ive put in alot of hours.

I think a solitary safe island would be cool, a place where people can hang out safely but has no merchants so you cant sell treasure. The moment you can start hiding in safe zones as an escape mechanism, is also when griefers can harass someone, rob them and escape to safe zone themselves leaving you with no way of getting revenge as it were.

  • I dont like the idea of a safe zone personally. But if Rare do decide to implement one, i would make it a social hub in the far corner of the map with no factions for cashing chests. Just have shops and a tavern and maybe some mini games (cards) and use it for recruitment. Or have two social hubs one safe and the other not safe, so if i do lose at cards i can shoot you in the face. Maybe choose to spawn there.

  • I think it defeats the purpose of being a pirate in Sea of Thieves. Safe Zones would take away from the game.

  • @hoddle84

I would love an island where you can sail to and play games with other pirates. Would be a lot of fun I think!

  • @yualee Disagree. One of the more hype parts in Sea of Thieves is seeing a ship dock, cannoning a team mate to the outpost, preventing them from cashing a chest, and then taking the chest for yourself.

I'd rather they just make safe zone cities with no voyage shops or monetary involved npc's. Just a place with a tavern in it.

  • @shin-hisako Safe zones sound abusable too. If someone is being chased all they would do is run to a safe zone and never come out.

  • @shin-hisako

That sounds nice as well :) Something like neutral islands/towns where you can sail to, to hang out with other people, buy stuff and play games and drink grog. Would be funny if each of those cities had specific clothes you unlock by playing certain mini games or by doing certains things for those cities (gaining rep).
