The only fix posted in the support page is to close and reopen the game, which I have done a few hundred times now. At this point, I really don't know what to do. Anyone else run into this issue and fix it?

@badgrahmmer The servers are just hammered right now. Even if you do get in, you won't be able to start voyages or cash in gold or buy things, stuff like that. I'd just give it a while and try again later.
@ogilikpatoez The dev team is probably working h*****n this. Also you have to keep in mind that the community team, who manage announcements, doesn't usually stay up this late.

Because I manage distributed servers and systems on Azure and AWS for game companies and have for almost 10 years?
