Golden shovel

  • I will start off by saying that last night was my first time playing this game and me and my mates had a great time sailing around and looting, getting stuck in storms and all the other shenanigans we had. Now I saw the golden shovel that you can buy from the quest guy and spent 500 gold purchasing it, then my game froze shortly after and when I went to use the shovel after I loaded back in it was back to the normal one we get, is this a glitch? Why have us spend gold to have it disappear, one friend had said after death he heard we loose it just want to know for sure whats going on. Either way I won't spend that much gold on it again lol

  • Right now cosmetics do not save on your character. Go back to the equipment chest and your gold shovel will be waiting for you!

  • Equipment chest my man. Can find it outside the merchants hut at any outpost or in your ship.

  • Thanks guys! I didn't look around much after it happened as it was getting late but will find it ton

  • @big-daddy-bones believe me when I say I freaked out just as much. But in the alpha you got used to going back and re equiping. Im sure its just limited to these specific tests.

  • I didn't want to make another topic about the Golden Shovel, as the forums' organization is a mess to sort through.

Sooooo...... Do the shovels have like abilities other than appearances. I.e: Does the golden shovel, or any other shovel for that matter, require less digs to get to a chest ?
I mean, the game is all pretty and everything, but there has to be something to keep us wanting to play...
Reason I play and prefer single player is because people just talk all day in the chats about all the gear they buy and how it looks yadda yadda yadda, ...yawn* quit boring me already!

So what does this upgraded gear do anyways ?

  • @dr1sndwhichgun It's simply a skin. The other items do not do anything better or worse.

  • @the-lion-turtle Well pardon my french, but that's kinda gay! then what the hell... What were the devs thinking ?

I mean, apart from skins, wouldn't it make sense to have upgraded gear and gadgets do MORE than just appearances?!?

that's just ghetto, and lazy imo... I think the Devs had a little too much grog making this game :/

Better quality. Everything you start with is cracked... the items you buy are new. It's just to say, "Hey! Look at me. I have a fancy shovel and you don't because I have more gold than you."well ten the premise of this game is built on a cracked foundation... Jeez, here I thought, this game had "a little more" potential...
if they're targeting like 5 to 10 year olds, they will surely captivate that demographic. But if they want to retain a more mature audience, and keep the game evolving long after launch, they're going to have to put in a bit more elbow grease than that!

  • This has always been advertised as a Horizontal Progression game!

    Nothing has changed!

Playing the game and learning/mastering the mechanics is where you "git gud", everything else is cosmetic.

The better the ship and personal gear you have is what sets you apart and tells other how sucessful a pirate you've been!

They've been open about this from almost day one. They just don't want it in their game. They want the focus of the game to be on the adventures and players. Not some piece of armor that's 1 point higher than your previous armor.

  • @zenzuki So essentially, I just played the entire game in the closed beta. I've worked QA before, and with a month before launch, the mechanics are essentially sold as is. it's too late for them to make any alterations, or additions for that matter, as they might break other functionalities.... that's really too bad. This game "I thought" would have more "Potential"... :/ sadface

  • What was in the Beta wasn't the whole game!

There are way too many threads already that explain what is planned, so I wont be going there.

But you asked about the "Golden Shovel" and why it wasn't stronger or could dig faster. And that would go along with why wouldn't a Golden Gun fire faster/truer or a Golden Ship wouldn't be faster or less sinkable!

And that is the pure definition of a vertically progressive game (most mmo's) or a slippery slope to something akin to a "pay to win" game (if said items could only be gained through a store with real money).

There's nothing for Rare to make alterations too in that aspect as they've never said this would be the case and is not the game they're developing.

The game has monumental potential and what we've seen in Alpha isn't what was seen in Beta and more will be in at launch. With much more to come in the months and years (hopefully) beyond that.

Rare is a great dev and is onto something very special here and the good thing is, they've been shown to be very receptive to us and our ideas, so you never know!

They could be working on things right now that'll turn that /sadface upside down! ;)

  • Well yesterday I bought the golden shovel and golden compass together. Equipped them both.

And next the four chests I dug up were (in this order):

    •thousand grogs
    •thousand grogs
    •captains chest
    •thousand grogs

Now between the description and my inadequate, but contemplating results, I find it hard to believe these don’t increase chest rarity and/or quantity.

  • @the-lion-turtle then there is no reason to waste money then on non functional items. I think I'll just horde my gold.
