I also had this happen and then my friend later in the day. Was waiting to see if I could repeat it to report it. We were on the sloop and both were patching up holes in choppy water when it happened if I recall. My friend seemed to think it was due to the water clipping through the sloop right at the edge where the "cabin" and stairs to go down meet but I never could confirm.

I have a few comments about the closed beta. I was a little disappointed that my winnings from the tech alpha didn't continue over, but I suppose I understand. I've had difficulty from the beginning with major glitches, however, that are undermining the enjoyment of the game - such as my ship suddenly diving under a wave, then going airborne and floating off to space (my son loved that and wants it to be a 'bermuda triangle' aspect to the game). My first play of the CB was aboard a 4 man crew, the members already had quests and I finished with about 300 gold. My second was on a solo craft and the gold guild guy glitched so I couldn't buy quests. Since then, my gold mysteriously dropped to around 48 and I still haven't been able to get gold quests. I've also not been able to find the lady that gives you the glowing skull quests. I'm a little surprised that there aren't more advancements from the TA as well. I loved seeing the different designs -skins?- on the ships and I believe the general texture of the ship has improved as well. But it's still not something we can alter ourselves (yet), nor can we choose the look of our own pirate yet. And am I crazy or has the 4 man ship become much harder to steer? Love the new rifle, but we still seem to only have the same two choices of nearly all other items. I guess with the launch date only a couple months away I just expected more new things to experience. Communication has greatly improved and I no longer need to friend request every member of the crew to be able to speak with them which is amazing. Overall, if the glitches improve (and I can finally acquire quests), I think this will be extremely fun and with any luck I'll come across some new additions that I haven't found yet.

I fell through my sloop aswell. I was standing infront of the Grog Barrel and was drinking.
After drinking one Grog i was standing still with my back to the wall. As soon as my char became drunk i fell through the wall behind me and landed inside the water. I thought it was due to the random motion of being drunk but it was in the same spot you described, at the bottom of the stairs. Might be an issue with clipping.
