HDR Too Dark (More Options Please)

  • Please add options to adjust HDR settings. It is way too dark compared to other HDR games. I can barely make out objects at night and during the day it just seems constantly overcast. At the very least add a way to adjust HDR On/Off in the game so I don't have to disable it at the system level for this one game.

  • @voigtboy yep, I have a similar issue. LG OLED65C6 here. I don't have this oversaturation issue on other games. The darks in Sea of Thieves are super smeary, and then it's sunny and overly blinding

  • @voigtboy Completely 100% agree

  • @voigtboy OK!

  • I seem to have the opposite results with HDR. With it enabled I am able to see perfectly in the dark but disabled and I can't see anything in the dark. I don't experience the overcast issue either.

  • @lifewcoke Click the link for 4 screens taken from my XBOX ONE X. 2 are regular and 2 are HDR.. the darker ones are HDR!!

  • @LIFEWCOKE Oh and that is broad daylight... night is unplayable.

  • lol, you want the dayz gamma exploit to find people easier.
    AHAHAHHA nice try!!!
P.S. - Oh noes!! night time is dark!!!!! someone call a scientist.

  • @voigtboy I definatley see the difference. When I start playing after work I will take a look at this a bit more closely. I think what you are seeing is what I see with no HDR.

  • @voigtboy Quick question, are you streaming from your Xbox to your PC while playing?

  • I turned HDR off, and it looks so much better. I can see at night, and it's not like staring into the sun during the day. I really don't think it's my TV, since - like I said - I haven't seen this before. B****r. Unless changes are made or display options added ... I'll have to turn HDR off for sessions of SoT.

  • @cable0312 I'm just comparing the nonHDR vs HDR. In no way am I asking for some sort of exploit, only similarity.

  • @lifewcoke The screenshots were taken directly from my XBOX ONE X (screen capture).

  • @hauz20 I'm with you 100%. I'm playing Star Wars BF2, Monster Hunter and various other HDR titles all with built in HDR/brightness related sliders and have NO issues. This is the only game so far that is beyond playable in it's default HDR state.

  • @lifewcoke Make sure you click on picture I provided. It will take you to a link to see 4 images. 2 with HDR and 2 without HDR so you can see the difference.

Same. It's very odd in this case, at least for me. Like I said earlier, it's not just that it's dark at night (it is) but it's smeary too, like there's a filter added.

  • @hauz20 So how do we make sure the devs see this or are at least looking into it?

  • I love the lighting and colors in hdr mode but it does seem very dark compared to SDR mode I know it’s hdr repesents real life but when it’s dark it’s extremely hard to see anything other than say torch lights

  • That's the point to use your lanterns etc. If you add that and increase it then storms also no longer have any effect with darkness. It should be left jus the way it is.

  • Same here, HDR night is very dark. Other games are fine

  • Same here. Have to dive into settings of tv (ue55mu7000) and even with brightness and backlight all the way up I can't see well enough at night to properly play.

  • Same here, Philips tv with HDR on night is like night with eyes closed.

  • from what I understand the xbox one x features aren't in the game yet (assuming you're using an xbox)

  • It's insane dark. Wasn't like this before. Now it seems my sky isn't even turning blue anymore just greenish dark or something. Not sure what happened but at night it's unplayable for me. Can't see anything even when using the latern.

  • This is why you have a lantern, boy.

  • @grievous32 no dude it's something with the settings of the game. Its been fine before.

  • @hans-wurst-nl When I played the game before I could see with the lantern even if it was really dark. Even the map was really dark when I wasn't beside a light. I'd prefer the game like that, to make the lantern and the light more useful.

  • @grievous32 I prefer it like that as well but when you can't see anything at night even with latern that's no fun at all. I'm just guessing where I'm going to when on an island at night. And as I said before it wasn't like this before.

  • Agreed. And please, do not make any comments about it being fine unless you've actually played it in HDR. I'm comparing HDR to NON HDR. It is not just an opinion that it is dark but rather it is factually much darker than the non HDR counterpart. You can actually see in the dark without HDR but with it you cannot see ANYTHING.

  • On LG tv it looks terrible with hdr. It would be great to have an option to turn off the hdr in the game. It is totally dark :(

  • This! Devs, please fix! The HDR is way out of whack. It's like it's too dark. I honestly won't buy this if it doesn't have proper HDR support. That was one of the few reasons I was going to get it for, to showcase HDR capabilities and this game to my family and friends.

Complaints about the HDR being too dark when the games HDR settings weren't even in any stress tests or betas.
It's enough to make a pirate throw his parrot out a port hole.

Lol, fair point, but it was confusing since the game automatically triggered my TV's HDR mode despite that functionality apparently not being "turned on" yet.

I played some this morning, and it was much better, though I did jack up my OLED backlight before even starting the game. I still think a brightness slider (and general graphics options) would be welcome in the settings

  • Same Problem here, way too dark in HDR mode!!
    Add a gamma slider immediately!
So much time for creating this game and no gamma option in the settings...can’t believe it!!

  • Funnily enough, my game is darker when HDR is disabled. That's the first time that's happened to me.

I assume it goes without saying, but the HDR setting process on Xbox isn't great. I ran through that whole thing and my TV was way too dark. I played around afterwards and set it properly on my own.

  • Wish they enabled HDR on PC.............
