A Player Driven Economy

  • Hi all!
So in my recent video I made for YouTube, I speculate on what a Player Driven Economy would do for Sea of Thieves. If you want to go more in depth you can check out my video below, but I wanted to get the discussion going here too, to see what you all think!

So anyways, so what I mean by a Player driven economy is, players having the ability to buy/sell/trade their items to other players. Wether this be with two players trading face to face, or players buying and selling things on an Auction house.

Obviously right now there isn’t a lot to sell, we haven’t seen even close to the full game from what it sounds, so some of this could already be coming down the road.. but anyways

Giving the players the power to drive the economy could do a few things for Sea of Thieves:

First of which, it could increase the longevity of the game, giving players more tasks to tackle if they choose

It opens up the possibility of trades in the game, such as fishing/tailoring and so on. These trades would have to fit with the theme though. They wouldn’t be able to give players an advantage over one another, so for example, tailoring would be for crafting clothing, sails and flags that maybe you don’t get from the progression system. It could even have more of a style of a tailor or a high end clothing store

Fisherman would obviously catch fish, the different variety of fish would have different effects, such as healing certain amounts, or maybe giving the player the ability to breathe under water .

You could have a blacksmith which can craft different weapon skins or item cosmetics for players.

The key to this would be having these trades based off your adventures, so if you wanted sails that resemble a kraken, you’d need to as a tailor go kill a kraken, gather it’s skin and maybe a few other materials to craft what you need, and then you could keep it for yourself or sell it on the auction house.

I think this system would help support the game down the road, and it could evolve with the world as all else in Sea of Thieves. Obviously this idea is not perfect and I’d love to hear your feedback!

  • I like the idea @Ser-Swag-Pants . I can see it opening up so many doors into a deeper, more vast world.
The interesting part would be seeing how RARE would fit a player economy in. How deep they would go.
For example you mentioned tailoring, I can imagine a ton of unique clothes making for longevity and progression.
I myself would like to see ship builders, or just customizers... Specials fixtures and sail shapes...etc...
    Great video and ideas!

  • @ser-swag-pants great ideas, but i'm not really sure how sailing in to port full of cargo to trade will work. sneaky pirates can just sneak on board, steal your cargo, and sail away(or sell it). or maybe pretend to be a buyer but then kill you. really hope Rare has a fix for this!

  • @dark-shadow9056 any trade anyway would be at player risk. Game's got no support for a real player economy or trade like an AH, or trade system.

Basically comes down to: "I've got two standard chests for your chicken and some planks" and basically backing away slowly with each of your goods.

Of course.. finding people to play along is also part of the fun.

  • Biggest problem with this is “there are no safe zones”

    So yea good luck trading

  • @zombie-p1ague not everyone is always going to be your enemy, once text chat is implemented on pc, and the use of proximity chat, you could make it clear you wish to trade before getting close to another player. But again just a theory here, obviously if it ever happened it would have to fit in with the style of the game

  • @tre-oni I agree! Maybe there won’t be a need for any complex fair system where you don’t get ripped off. I just hope the community stays the same, or else it will discourage people to trade if they constantly get killed and such. :) really looking forward to seeing how it plays out

  • I don’t know just see this as one of those sounds good ideas but in game will one bring about ambushes and back stabbing

  • @ser-swag-pants
I can foresee situations/sceneros where players manipulating and monopolizing the economy in SoT as well. Protectionisms and subversive tactics with merchants. Very interesting.

  • @zombie-p1ague they could have a vote to parley with nearby crews on the voting menu, crews could agree upon a timer for the parley, and items would only be able to be picked up by players on their own ship during parleys. This would lead to trading one item at a time back and forth and the worst that could be lost in a "trick" trade to any competent sailor would be one item if the other crew failed to reciprocate. You can then still take the loss and try and leave while you have the benefit of parlay, or just fight for the chest back. Maybe if a cannon is shot and hits a parleyed player or ship there would be a debuff or the players names would go red for a time, and the ship would be forced to fly a jolly roger

We already have the tools like shovels and buckets to have some small scale mechanics to cater to more in depth item gathering than just from barrels. Maybe banana trees etc could bloom when watered or other simple but fitting of the graphics type things to provide items that can be used for this economy. A grog distillery, a grape vineyard and the ability to make and age wine, a tobacco field and a cigar factory. All designed to suit this world but this way instead of islands being a stop along any sort of linear voyage, they could be tools that could be used by players to create their own trade routes and voyages. I feel like this idea is hard to grasp as something needed in this game, but a pirate game without a merchant economy will get stale. If there was a lot of variety to the "crafting" if you will it would be amazing, things like banana grogs and coconut husk wrapped cigars etc lol. Just ways to use the items to create things to sell to npc merchants, add a faction system on top with reasons for players to risk trading to make money because of price variations among the factions.

  • @ser-swag-pants I did watch your video earlier today, it was awesome by the way and I even posted a comment like a good little follower :).

Anyhow, I know Rare has kicked around this idea for a while now:
Got to: page 2 (or read below)

In the course of the presentation, Chapman mentions (ahem):

    Different classes of ship
Character clothing made out of vanquished enemies (for instance, a Kraken tooth hat)
Character augmentations (e.g. hooks for hands, a peg leg made of an old blunderbuss)
Ship upgrades (cannon types, reinforced hulls or upgraded paddles)
    Figureheads
    Sail designs
    Captain’s cabin designs
    Ship colour (Black Pearl ahooooy)

Now again, this is something they said a while ago, and its been an idea they've said more than a few times back in 2015 and in to 2016. But nothing really new has been said about this. Not really sure why, or what has changed, if anything has at all. But I found it interesting that the idea of some kind of crafting or player made content in general was at least kicked around at Rare. The rest of the list has just recently been confirmed, so I am hopeful that the other things on here that are not yet confirmed are true.

  • @ethnine there is soo much in that article that is talked about that you dont hear anything about after.. makes me wonder how much they are actually hiding until launch, and what got scrapped

  • @ser-swag-pants I'm a huge fan of this idea, even in basic form and particularly player to player trading.

I'd love to be able to sell things back to the merchants as a starting point as well as the merchants offering different prices for items - so bananas might be in short supply on Golden Sands, but abundant in Plunder Outpost so it would make it possible to transfer goods yourself outside the Merchant quest system perhaps, or that clothing you bought which no longer fits your style.

I would also like to see some sort of 'gathering' of items other than essential ones, ingredients for cooking perhaps, herbs, seeds, fish and other ocean produce etc

  • @clumsy-george Whispers pssst, matey. We need to gather up all the nana's and corner the market. We could have gold plated underwear in no time. ;)

  • not going to happen, there wont be P-D-E because there is no economy, you buy a weapon once and you get item skins and clothing for your character, that's it

  • @clumsy-george Haha! Forgive me.... of course the Tavern is the highlight of the isle and the grog they brew the best on the Seven Seas! What was I thinking???!

  • @clumsy-george Maybe you could start doing those Banana and Rum cocktails, they're right on trend, all the trendy bars in Daggertooth are doing them.

  • Is there any information from Rare about any kind of economy at all?
Right now it feels like it's just one thing after another that just make me don't want to play this game. Really really hoping they will bring out a LOT of unanswered questions in the Beta, or they will loos a big part of there player-pool.
The big question right now is simple, is this going to be one of the best games ever made, "the new World Of Warcraft"(yes i know it's not an mmorpg and bla bla, but you get the feeling), or is this going to be just another "3 weeks of casual fun" game.

  • @Clumsy-George said in A Player Driven Economy:

    @katttruewalker
Bananas!!!??? Who comes to Golden sands for bananas? One comes only to Golden Sands to have a great grog made with Flemish angelwee...Who cares about bananas? ( * Sorry Mrs Truewalker , our moron, slipped my gaze , don't worry ,it will be solved ...WHACK...WHACK WHACK WHACK WHACK ...pfew there you go ...he will be silent for the whole day now, no no no ,no need to thank me, it was my pleasure, yek yek yek)

I've had more than a couple of the drinks your "Little Angel" make in that Tavern on Golden Sands and trust me, they'll make ye go bananas, my friend...

Oh, and if she's an angel, I'm not sure I want to meet anything on the other end of the spectrum. heh heh.

  • @averagestraw199 there's a lot of hope and wishes from the community, and there's likely 4 or 5 articles out there with different interviews hinting and some kind of economy system, or player made content. But all of those are from 2015 to late 2016, so either those ideas have been scrapped or they're keeping them from us.

Add it to the list of things that "might" be in the game.

  • @ethnine 100% agree, i want this game to felt like a mmorpg without levels & advantages,
and i want the game RP, so, no auction house, Trade hand by hand!!!!
i know it will be hard to trade, but it will be fancy :3

A crafting system only to add weapons, weapon skins, and skins, and consumables.
i dont want to eat banana all my life, i want to breath under water, and i want to be able to spawn a Huge monster that will kill my enemies by me, and maybe kill me too xD

  • @jascaldeira in the new Tails from the Tavern they talk about something that stops you from drowning, I don't have any idea what that is, but sounds cool! And if they have items you can find that do that, maybe there are Cutlass' out there that will glow red when the Kraken is close by! :)

    @58:00 (i think)

  • Cannonballs, planks, food would be nice goods to trade, if you start your journey you can buy them and the ship will be supplied up. And if a crew is done and has something left it can sell them again. And if you sink a ship you'll get gold depending on the amount of supplies a ship had on board.

  • @averagestraw199 I dont think you will get a lot of answers in the beta, the beta as they have said is a way to test the servers handling a ton of people, as well as giving you a glimpse at the pirate experience in the game. Looking at past interviews/videos and such, there is so much mentioned that is never mentioned again, That IGN article above is a good example. So I have a feeling there is going to be a lot more in launch then what people are actually assuming

  • @ser-swag-pants Hope you are right!

  • @ethnine Is this not the most "guessed" game ever? No one seams to know anything really=).
    So much for "insider".

  • @Ser-Swag-Pants

I don't even think it needs to be player driven, just having an economy would be enough!

I remember another classic pirate game (published 30 years ago, darn I am showing my age again) that was all about gathering resources like Cannonballs, Food, Spices, Gold, Etc. and buying and selling these are different ports for different prices. The trick was remembering where you could buy what, for how much, which ports how a storage of which resource/would pay a premium for it. All the while pirating others and trying not to get raided yourself.

  • @cpt-erebos I wouldn’t want you to get gold from sinking a ship, I think the supplies should float to the top like with chests so you have a chance at grabbing them
@RGBKnights i love this idea, makes the trade spread out so you can’t all just sit at one outpost, they would have to have more people per server at outposts though for this to work well

  • tbh this is really tricky to do right. on one hand you can overkill it and make it super grindy to get anything you want, as prices for mats will be no doubt expensive. Also fear of it becoming like an Eve online sort of deal where you have the 10% super rich and then the rest are dictated by their affairs. Not sure how much ild like it to be 100% player controlled tbh.

  • I just want the ability to give and receive gold. I fully intend to establish a merchant company by paying off other players to serve as guards.
I intend to stockpile a vast hoard to fund my operation.

  • 100% agree with you! I really think that be able to sell to a NPC or a player could increase the gameplay. And I add some more: some rewards of specials chests or defeated bosses could be uncommon/RARE/Legendary cosmetic items instead of only give chest with gold. The only question I'd have is who would get the item that dropped from the boss? Perhaps everyone roll dice? But I really like to see some items as rewards so players can trade between them.
