Row Boat?

  • Sea of Thieves cover art

The cover art for the game shows all the things that are in the game so far:

    • The ship and its customized sails, color, and figurehead
    • Four silhouettes indicating a crew size of 4
    • Sharks in the water; seagulls in the air
    • A lightning storm approaching
    • Islands and caves

It even shows elements that have been teased, like a giant sea monster attacking one of the ships. While it doesn't show the small ship (sloop), it does show 3 pirates in a row boat (1 on each oar and 1 on the rudder). Thoughts?

If it takes three men to operate, requires being lowered into the water, and equally raised out of the water afterwards, is it worth it? It would be faster to jump overboard and swim to shore, or, better yet, shoot yourself out of a canon.

While it does give players more options and would be handy for role playing/immersion, the fact that it looks like it needs 3 players instead of 1 to operate is a bit of a let-down. If this is the large-ship variant, and the small-ship one will just require 1 person operating both oars with no rudder necessary then that would be better.

  • -I got a theory than maybe Mermaid will not be as convenient as it is right now. It might not be there or cost some money...
-Maybe there is a need of raw boat, if we sink, to save chests in water to bring it to the closest coast without be vulnerable about shark... but be more visible to other boat...
-Or maybe just for the content... still a tool let sea how players will use it...
    -For role playing....

Still i like them to put in if possible... i like row boat in a pirate game. :D

  • @nos37 We did have a cracking discussion around small wooden lifeboat type vessels which is probably archived now, but this included where one might be situated on the galleon and I believe the suggestion was that it could hang at the stern below the deck outside the captain's cabin or perhaps the overhang above -

Perhaps with one of these arrangements

There are rowboats and wrecks of smaller boats all around the islands so it would be odd not to see them usable in game in some form eventually?

  • @kermar-tutu
I hope they put it in, too, and the points you made about the sunken ship and recovering dignity are great points!

  • If they make it into the game i think it would be cool if the life boats sank really quick in rough water. you will be alright using it to go from your ship to the coast but sail too far out or for too long it goes down.

  • I definitely want to see row boats, I think they should be able to operate with one man, but if you have all 4 guys for your crew it would go faster bc you would have one on each or and one on the rudder, the last one would be standing at the tip not really doing anything but possibly directing and maybe having a musket ready for possible attackers. Or even make the front spot the harpoon spot, so you can hunt whales and stuff as well as using it for transporting treasure, wares, and pirates. For getting it on and off the row boat you could make it so everyone sits in the boat then there is a pulley system that one person can activate, which drops your rowboat and crew into the water below and then you can row wherever. To get it back up you could attach the rowboat from the ocean at a spot on the side of the boat, then activate the rope pulley system again, except this time it works more like the anchor, one person pulling up the boat takes more time but if 2 or 3 people are helping you pull the ropes, then it will raise to the boat much faster. Deep sea conditions should affect the boat but I don’t think it should thrash it and sink it. Maybe just make it harder to maneuver. If you do hit a huge wave or get crushed by a rogue wave that is one thing, but don’t just make the boat fall apart for no reason. All in all I think the row boat is a must, it’s functionality will ultimately make it or break it. If it is useless or a pain to use then obviously it would be a waste to put it in the game, but if some of these things work I think it could really be fun and add a lot to the way we play.

  • Row boats would be amazing, even if you would only use them very, very rarely. Would make for some fun moments stuck on one with a squad, however i dont think row boats would fit on a normal ship without making the upper deck really crowded.

  • @andersd13 junk ships normally had one hanging off the p**p deck

  • but its ugly if its on the back of the ship... i think it can just be easier if its in our inventory... we summon it as we summon a horse in elder scroll for example. there is no need and space to be actualy visible on ship.
-or it can pop up from water like chest we the boat sink.

and actualy i beleve the raw boat was in the centre of the main deck up side down...

  • If it keeps me safe from the sharks I don’t mind 😂

  • When I was playing in alpha, there were so many times where I wish I'd had a row boat... It actually felt like it was missing from the game to me. But I do think that it should be able to be manned by one player, to keep it usable for solo players.

  • Or tie it to the stern with a rope?

Would be the funniest thing to see a galleon pass by with a crew member playing a lively jig in the rowboat tied to the back

  • @zombie-p1ague That would work i guess but as

I think it would be optional, just choose if you want to ''equip'' rowboats. Also being able to just summon rowboats seems a little unimmersive, however thats just my opinion. Towing the boats behind your ship seems like a viable option https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/25130/master-and-commander/6

  • I think this would be a really cool mechanic, and something that have been on my mind since i first got my eyes on this game. Just think if later they implement bigger ship, like 7, 8 or maybe 10 man ships, (something i thought was sure to be in the game, but now im not anymore :P) and these huge ships have their hull and keel so deep in the water that you have to "park" your ship way further away from some of the island's. And having a small row boat beeing essential to even enter some of the island's would be a really neat thing. And aswell implement all of the mechanics @SithMasterDMan is talking about would be so cool.

I think we will see row boats beeing used in the game, mainly because of all the screenshots of them, but not just make this a thing that makes you think:" Well, thats cool!" It should make you think: "Oh, i really need to use my row boat to enter this island so im not eaten, or use 15 minutes swimming ashore." Make the row boat an essential is all im saying..

  • One of the dev team's mottos is "believeable, but not realistic." A row boat appearing out of thin air wouldn't fit that. It wouldn't necessarily have to be stored on the ship in a historically accurate way either.

The row boats can hang off of the back of the ship and be accessible from the quarterdeck by jumping in from above (or from the captain's cabin on the large ship / from the map table on the small ship by interacting with the row boat from below). They could be indestructible while hanging, but once dropped they can be destroyed.

Each ship can have only one, and it can be resupplied by the shipwright (or crafted with wooden planks?). They are small, making them hard to hit with a canon or ram, but a successful hit could knock everyone overboard and create a mess of gatherable planks. Rowing the boat between two ropes dangling from the back of the ship could lock the boat in place, aligning it perpendicular to the ship, and allow the operator(s) to use pulleys to raise it out of the water.

The row boat for the small ship could be smaller, have less space for stores, require only one to operate, but they must look over their shoulder to see where they're headed if they're alone.

The row boat for the large ship could be bigger, have more space, require one to operate (1 on both oars), but it moves slower than the smaller row boat. A second operator on oars would make the boat faster (same speed as small row boat) and another operator on the rudder would make the boat turn sharper, allow a compass in hand, and see where the boat is headed without having to look back over their shoulder.

  • Still chest appearing from nowere when we sunk... i beleve raw boat can be sumon like that as well... from position of the ship under water go up to the surface and float. and if its on the back of the ship... we cant sea the view from captain cabin window.
thing need to be usefull but they need to be nice looking. this game is a mixe between cosmetique and gameplay ... not just gameplay.

if its fit well im ok for it to be seen on the boat, but if it looks weird... i prefer that to be just hiden somewere...

  • @kermar-tutu no , please, it would ruin all immersion and it wouldn’t be fun having to lower and rise the rowboat to the ocean. Plus I think they look kind of cool on the back

  • @dark-shadow9056 does the fact chest come out of boat even they were in the below deck ruin all your immersion? because it should olso i your argue is correct.
at the time of galeon, or sails ship with guns like in sea of thieve back of the boat use to show the power of the nation he represent. more it was luxury more it was suppose to intimidate. So put a raw boat in the back of a small ship it ok but big galeon of course not.
this part of the boat is like the BOW of the boat.!!!
It suppose to be a customisation for show our glory ( as the bow i hope we will be able to customise the back)... The bow as the back. you like to see a raw boat in front of the galeon? its actualy as convenient as the back! if not explain me the difference!.
    So why not the front???
-Rawboat supose to be on the side if it have to be there. or up side down in the middle of the boat.
if we have to raise up the raw boat and down its cool and i like it too but if its to much inconvinent who will do that when you can shoot yourself to canon. (i actualy wasnt realy happy when this came out first because of this, now im use to it but still...)
I hope this canon thing are not their solution for every thing... (no raw boat needed, no rope boarding needed, no grapnel needed... etc)
Like you i like to see raw boat put in water and bring it up if possible.
But if it is, it have to be on the side of the boat not the back. i dont want a stupid raw boat ruin my future goldy huge skull costum of intimidation of my galeon back.. my sloop i dont care but not my galeon.!!

  • OUPS... How can we show picture on this forum?

  • @kermar-tutu The image would need to be hosted elsewhere and then you simply copy and paste the link/address into the post box :)

  • @katttruewalker i did that but it didn t work... :(

  • @kermar-tutu It looks to me as if you'd tried to upload them rather than right click - copy image address and then paste? Are you able to give me the website where they are hosted? I'll see what I can do :)

  • i just type back of pirate ship.... on internet no big deal... i actualy screen shoot the the back of the boat... any screen shot of Back of the boat is fine as long is a beatifull vessel. black pearl, queen mary revenge, the boat in black sails, a skully back of a lego pirate ship or skull and bone... My computer is mac and im not realy good at this... :(

  • A row boat would be great, Even if it only carried 1 person and 1 chest, Just so that it helps people vs sharks rather than having to fight them..

  • Good points you point out! I really hope there are row boats. That will be so much fun!

  • @its-stoobs Agreed! Row boats would add a fun aspect to the game. I think they will be in the game. If not at launch then soon after. I think at launch though.

  • @nos37 Only if two crew members can flip it upside down and walk along the seabed!

One person should be able to control it through oar control, but then if you had three in it, two people row and one steers

  • FYI you don't "steer" rowboats usually. The only time I've seen a boat that size with an actual movable rudder is when it's powered. Rowboats are steered using the oars. This would make it difficult for two people to row together unless they're very coordinated about it.

That would increase the whole "Team work" aspect of the game..

  • Awesome idea.. save us swimming or stop us from trying to park like a boss and failing with a dozen holes in the bow of the boat. Which we've all done lol

  • @l-jayrun-l Or parking on land....

  • @katttruewalker I think that the Rudderboot should be behind or they are pulled afterwards
    welcome on board ^^

  • @buhchris I think behind works also, being pulled might look a little odd? - although with it hanging you'd have to have some mechanic to get it down onto the water quick enough to make it worthwhile using, maybe just a quick release and it drops down?

  • @katttruewalker I have two examples here would be an idea I think
    Welcome on board
