Steam Version required!

  • The first time i saw this game i was really excited! Even tried to access to the insider program and finally was able to do so. The game wasn't exactly as i thought, had a small deception there, but what i had between my hands was so FUN even with random people and not even friends!

So the next question for me was should i pre-order or will buy this game?
    And the answer is no...

The reason is simple: Not on Steam and even worse on Windows Store... never bought a single game on the windows store platform, allready had to suffer with Origin & Uplay that are c**p platforms, but Windows Store is the next level of c**p.

    Short story:
I'm waiting State of Decay 2, since i saw rumors about it. It's a game i was more than hyped and that i thought would be an instant buy / pre-order with eyes closed. I think no one can be more hyped about this game than i'm, but....
    Windows Store exclusive.
This single thing makes me hesitate to buy it and i might not even buy it even if it makes years i'm waiting for it!

So just put this game on Steam. Game will have more visibility and more people will buy it, cause Steam is the reference for any PC player that doesn't spend a ton of time looking for games all arround. A lot of people boycot Windows Store for good reasons especially for video games, so even hyped players, like me, won't buy it on WS.

To be honnest i would spend 20 euro or even x2 price if it was on Steam and buy it without even thinking.

    I totally Agree with you.
Windows store is c**p just like Origin and Uplay. Hopefully they put it on steam.
    Great thread ;-)

  • How dare Microsoft give you an option to play Xbox exclusive games on your PC!! Shame on them for publishing games that rely on their network servers and matchmaking on their own games platform!!

  • Can promise you it won't happen. Rare is owned by Microsoft. Microsoft are publishing the game. It's a Play Anywhere title and has cross-platform play between Windows 10 and Xbox One.

All reasons it won't be on Steam.

  • I wouldn't say required..

  • @tehhngm I understand your frustration, but it is an Xbox Live game. Xbox Live is an integral part of the matchmaking. You played the alpha using Xbox Live.
The solution would be for Microsoft to support XBL where you live, not to put the game on Steam.

  • @the-lion-turtle but there are Xbox games that have crossplatform with steam. None of them being exclusives. However, all Msoft talked about the past year was cross platform play. They continually pelted Sony as the bad guy but what have they done to actually promote it? They need to end Exclusives imo, or at the very least make even their own titles timed and eventually release on Steam. Windows Store sucks and it's not a huge chunk of the PC gaming market.

  • Microsoft/windows store isn't that bad. Putting the game on steam will just split the player base and it's not worth it.

  • I'm just reading the end of your post.. You do know this is a full priced game right?

  • @painsanta said in Steam Version required!:

Windows Store... never bought a single game on the windows store platform>

a lovely argument, I have never preordered anything either. Nor have I played pirate game ;)
All jokes aside, it does not really matter where its sold, currently its on xbox live and that means its either on xbox or MS store on PC. Simple as that.

To be honest i would spend 20 euro or even x2 price if it was on Steam and buy it without even thinking.

Gonna spoil the fun for you now, you have to pay x3 20 to get the game. Even if it's coming to steam oneday.

On a sidenote, it would be cool to connect steam and live... I would like to show off my live games and achievements on steam :P

  • @crude-jc-gamer Yep i know, but if the game is good and not on a c**p platform where there will be more players that doesn't matter for me.

@lucky-monkee Was trying to stay polite about my thoughts on the Windows Store.
Price isn't a problem until the game is fun and good.
The platform matters a lot in reality. A lot of people aren't looking h24 what are the new games coming out, that's why Steam is something important. You're looking for a new game? Let's go on Steam. That has become a reflex for many people, including me.

@realbadhor5e Yes & No. Player base will be split, that's true, but there will be much more players. Players that wouldn't even have known the game if it wasn't on Steam. Games selling much more on Steam than other platforms, it's a fact. So people that wouldn't have bought the game in the first place can't count as the "player base".

Forgot to mention one important fact about Steam: friend list!
That might seem weird, cause adding a new friend on an other platform or game is not hard at all (well normally), but all platform just split your contact all arround. How many times when i was playing to a game i received a pop-up "PlayerX is playing to this game" and then i go on the store and look what is that game about. Or friends asking me if the game i'm playing is good.
Not to mention the fact that you aren't speaking to all your "friend list" and sometimes when you see one player in your friend list playing the same game than you, you ask him to group up, talk & play with him again.
Using a platform that no one use if they can avoid it (speaking about gaming here) doesn't help the game at all. Even Uplay games like Assassin's Creed are available on Steam, even if when you open the game Uplay opens.

  • I think the fact that xbox and pc owners can play together is a great feature of the windows store and when steam launched it was worse than the windows store. So hopefully they also add friend lists and stuff in the future

  • @painsanta what makes using the window store so bad?

  • The way I see it, players who want to play the game will play the game. We can spend a long time arguing which gaming service steam (uplay, windows store, origins, etc) is best and what the benefits would be. Which is fairy pointless as I think we all well aware what platform gives what benefits. But anyway, in the end players who have heard of this game or are interested in the idea of it will find it and will, if its appealing enough to them, install it. Every gamedesigning brand has its own hoops you have to jump through to play the game, this is no different the way I see it.

  • @tehhngm
Because I think its been explained (in the posts above) that thats not Rare's choice, it's microsoft's & XBOX decision no? I dont mean to close down the discussiom, but isnt that kinda.. set in stone?

  • @painsanta stop being so stubborn and just get it from the windows store. The store isn't bad and you can ask your friends on steam if they have an Xbox gamertag or make new ones. Also, the store and Xbox live functions are part of windows so it's not like you need to download them.. plus Xbox live is free on windows.

You aren't married to steam. Having different game stores keeps said platforms competitive.

Most PC players have steam, gog, Uplay, origin, blizzard app, and w/e else. Steam isn't the end all of PC gaming. I am old enough to remember when people hated steam when it came out because it was viewed as unnecessary. People always hate change but such is life.

The only thing Microsoft needs to do is open windows store digital code purchases to other sellers to keep pricing competitive. Though, I am starting to see more Xbox play anywhere digital code sales elsewhere.

  • I don't agree with you. First of all, It's Xbox and Windows 10 platform game with play anywhere.Steam has a big community but I don't understand why people need to stack in it!

    I hear you.

I had purchased a few games from the old Games for Windows store, and when Microsoft closed it I lost access to them, including AOE3.

I wish there had been a class action against them for that - like as the richest company on the planet they couldn't afford to keep a couple of the servers up?

Some of the games I lost were also pre-play anywhere arcade titles like Missile Command. Back in those days you paid extra to get the PC and XBOX 360 version, and today I can't download either version of those games I paid for. Rubbish.

So yes, I have been ripped off by Microsoft and always try to avoid using their store when I can.

    BUT...

The management has changed since the GFW/360 days.

Back then they would never refund a digital sale for any reason. Now they are much more reasonable with refunds (at least in my case - I purchased a game and then it went on sale a few days later so I called them and got a refund.)

Back then they were dabbling in so many different things, getting in and out of so many markets so fast, it turned off a lot of customers like me. But now we know they are committed to XBOX and Windows gaming, even allowing cross play with Nintendo, iOS, and Steam.

And while I've been ripped off by the MS Store in the past, the company today IS a different company and we now live in a Digital World.

Today, instead of permanently removing access to our previous digital purchases (like they had with GFW/360) they are adding our old 360 purchases to the new XBOX One store.

And to be honest, I'd much prefer to buy my XBOX Play Anyware games digitally and get the PC version for free, and have no physical Disc to juggle, over buying the physical version.

That said, I also understand why games that are also available on Steam don't provide a free XBOX copy (like Astroneer, Ark, etc.) Since Steam can't assume the cost to distribute those games on XBOX too, they can't offer a free XBOX copy with the PC edition.

And I also understand that first parties do what first parties do.

Destiny 2 and Starcraft 2 is not on Steam either.

Finally, as much as I would love to have all my digital games from one source, without competition to keep companies honest and investing in innovation, we would only end up with worse service, not better.

  • Although I like having most of my library in one place, it really does not matter to me. If the game is good enough I will play it - simples!

  • I believe that the main reason the game is only in Microsoft store and not on steam at the moment is because in order to play the game you need to use a Microsoft account. Your Microsoft account is normally what you use to login to your computer on windows 10 when you have fully setup your account on your pc, It's also what you need to login to for Xbox live.
To sum it up, I don't think you need to connect to Xbox Live servers to play, it's more that you need to connect to Microsoft servers.

  • I really don't know why Windows Store gets so much flak. I literally have never had an issue with it. I like steam...but WS acts just the same as steam. Do not see what the problem is here.

  • yeah a steam version would be cool so my friends could see the hundreds of hours im gonna spend on this game

  • Windows version is more secure and impossible to crack in some way, so this is why the company decided to hang on to Windows and Xbox store, but we cant say, there might be steam version as well.

  • It all works fine, I can think of zero reason for me to prefer steam specifically over the windows store or xbox live.

I did laugh at the guy saying he'd pay more for it if it was on steam though. I suspect if it was £50 Windows store and £70 on steam he'd be the first to complain.

  • At the risk of repeating myself like a broken record on every thread about this 'needing to be on Steam because there are more players'..... At the end of the day, anyone that wants to play Sea of Thieves on a PC, needs Windows 10. Every Windows 10 PC has the Windows Store. Not every PC has Steam.... therefore, Sea of Thieves is available to more players....not wanting to use Windows Store, not having your friends on Xbox app etc is not relevant because everyone that is playing or wants to play Sea of Thieves on PC will have the Xbox app and Windows Store.

  • @ztruxranger Talking of exclusivity when dealing with Win 10/Xbox is a bit confusing right now. It makes more sense to say it is a "Xbox Live" exclusive - as it works on the platforms that support Xbox Live (the Xbox One family of consoles and the Xbox App on Windows 10).
Xbox is moving away from offering games only on their console with the "Play Anywhere" support, because their stated mentality is that they support their players better by giving them support across devices.

  • @drbullhammer said in Steam Version required!:

@tehhngm said in Steam Version required!:

@erinom3 Well I don't think they need to be 'fair' or something, just saying that if you can sell the game to 200 people, why choose to sell it to only 40?
I'm just trying to get some feedback, I could be stupid.
And I'd like if you could link me that explanation or something, thanks.

Keep in mind that when they decide about availability in countries, they're considering population and sales figures.

There are probably licensing and legal considerations as well. As a merchant, I'd want to sell my stuff in as many places as possible. If they aren't selling somewhere, I'm sure it is a complicated decision.

  • I am sort of in the same boat (no pun intended but still)

I agree it would be a good idea to place this game on steam but as someone in the post already said it most likely wont happen due to it being owned by a Microsoft run/owned/partner company.

In the past i have and others i know refused to buy anything from the windows store (mainly games due to lack of decent support among other issues) but this game has me thinking maybe i take the chance with this game.

Me and my brother played the hell out of the Tech Alpha and loved it more than any game we have played this past year, So based on that i cant miss the chance to own this game based on it only being on Windows Store/Xbox.

Given the option to buy it on steam even at a higher price i would opt for the steam purchase as its the main platform i get most of my games, also it is the given platform for 80%+ of PC gamers.

Back to OP i wouldn't say it is required to be on steam, BUT i have to admit that it would be a lot more popular and would sell alot more copies if the game was on steam or basically any other platform than Windows Store.

  • @ztruxranger Agreed. But I think they are working toward making all of their "first party" games Play Anywhere now, and getting out of the "exclusives" market, so to say.

  • @ztruxranger And most of those will probably be able to be played on both consoles and Win 10 PC.

  • @shudiabel yeah....

  • Honestly it could be worse the game could be exclusive to the xbox, I think the people at Microsoft have come a long way from the big headedness and anti consumer practices that dogged the company for years yeah they still have a long ways to go to get back the trust of consumers but at least we get a choice between xbox and pc unlike so many ps4 exclusives if the game not being on steam is a deal breaker the game probably isn't for you but by all mean always voice your opinion that's the only way these companies will ever stop with their anti consumer b.s. that treat loyal paying customers like open check books.

  • Like many others, yeah, I'd like a Steam version. But like others have said, how many PC gamers have got Steam, UPlay, Origin, Battle.net, Epic Games Launcher... What's the issue with 1 more that acts no different to the others? You buy, you download, the WS will keep it up to date, and you play...

Having played the last Tech Alpha, I almost certainly will be purchasing SoT. Me and my mates, of whom we had a mix of PC and XBox, had an absolute barrel of laughs playing this, the whole cross-platform experience was flawless. Some of the experiences included putting one of them in the brig, while it was under-water, only for him to die and upon respawning, came straight back into the brig and died again!

Long story short, I'm not bothered if it's WS only, it worked fine, and I'm hooked!

  • @erikinthebakery You do know that Microsoft own Xbox right? You're making out it's a big deal, but it's not.

  • @ztruxranger Absolutely!!

The only downside I've ever seen is PC players getting salty due to the games not being on Steam as well ;)
