Day One of Custom Seas, and Beyond

  • Hope to see allow spawning AI npc, so I can have background characters moving about. For cinema

  • Does anyone else get kicked out of custom seas after 20 seconds? I get the Hazelnutbeard error every time, happened in Insider as well. I can't try it, can't do any of the deeds..

  • Please note that we dont all want to use Custom Seas. I hope next season you can focus on other parts of the game.

  • @captwrath I have yet to play it, but I want to make a game mode where all players have to catch one of each of the ten main types of fish to win, so any tool that will allow me to make that is incredibly appreciated. I want to make a competitive version of the fishES% speed run mode from the speed run website.

  • @captwrath Great work. Hope this is start of something great.

I was one of the first pirates asking for this option. I just wanted to be able to play with friends with two or more crews on two or more ships. And I was a bit overwhelmed when I got into game. I know UI for creating a server that hosts a game must be complex, but that's the art of making a good UI.

I was puzzled with other options. Spawning a creatures works like... ermm. instant. And it spawns them near me. I frankly expected some map where creatures will be spawned. And honestly it could be really crazy. What if I spawn numerous octopods, megalodons, skelly ships around some island which is infested with skeletons, to get to some amazing treasure. So far, I don't know how to do it. I am not even sure I can call friends to make 2 boats naval battle.

PS. on the other note. Why haven't Rare team, used the tools at their disposals, and create a fun and amazing events I mentioned. I feel Rare always look at this game as pure PVP. Despite me not liking PVP, it just needed a few tweaks to be success. Just delete adventure and sailing and roaming around aimlessly for PVP and create a endless war and battles. Log into game, chose PVP, pick your fraction, go to battle here on a map you must win the island.

Take notes from World of Tanks.. World of tanks would be kinda weird game if tanks roam around giant world and meet each other, sometimes engaging in battle, sometimes making friends, sometimes fishing alone. hey?

  • @d3adst1ck need to hear it from them if that's the case that's my whole point here. We shouldn't have to speculate. If someone asks where is he shrouded ghost they should be able to have a dialogue and answer that question. It's just weird to draw the line at not being able to spawn that but within seconds we can spawn as many chest of fortunes, chest of legends, box of wonderous secrets, etc as we want. Just feels like a bait and switch the average person is going to see them market this with the keys to the seas tagline and think hey I can finally spawn this and the they open it up and it's like nah you really can't do that much. I was trying to spawn a meg inside of the legends tavern and couldn't but theirs a whole body of water their so it should work. Just struggling with stuff to do with this for the season. It's great for messing around but as a solo your kinda just screwed at the moment.

  • @jpskywalker9332 I don't know why they can't allow spawning the Shrouded Ghost, but it's definitely licensing when it comes to PoTC and Monkey Island.

  • The inability to use captained ships is extremely disappointing

  • @d3adst1ck well that's something they should get sorted out because it's a major request for this mode. The captain is an original character that was created for that and the monkey island area probably will come to custom seas but anything behind that remains to be seen. Last ship standing takes place in the pirates life tall tale 1 area and that's confirmed for custom seas so my hope is that POTC stuff is coming down the line but hey maybe the GMU will show up soon with massive ships and I'll forget all about it. Ghost ships we can't spawn either or use quicksail on. There are 3 Skelton lords that we can't spawn. 5 if I include the coral version of the gold hoarder and stitcher jim as an ashen lord. We can't spawn Flamehearts skull or any og tall tale items. We can't spawn any in game props or objects. I'm talking mostly about the set dressing stuff that would be cool to use for decorating or conjuring up new structures. The more custom seas becomes sort of like forge mode from Halo the better.

Not much they can do because Disney holds both of those IPs, and it probably costs a considerable amount to license them for other uses (and Disney is also notoriously picky about how their IP is used).

Last ship standing takes place in the pirates life tall tale 1 area

I don't think it does? It's just a Sea of the Damned map they made; that isn't specifically PoTC IP.

  • Thank you for finally releasing this tool to the community (and not just streamers with 1k discord members).

SoT is all about player interactions. Going to have so much fun hosting and joining custom games!

I'm mostly looking foward to do RP sessions; home brewed quests, secret identities among the crews, territory control and evolution of lore - adapted to player choices!

    Cheers!
Blasts 'Simian Ancres' (Blast Corps) while waiting for job shift to finish

P.S.: if Mike Chapman wants to try it I'd be honored!

  • Make the resource crates full on spawn
Allow Captained Ships in Custom Seas
The tool is very cool so far. Just needs a few more spawning features

  • Will a management API be made available to the public ?
The current commands currently made available are everything we need, but being able to automate ships setup (like the ship starting position or crate placement) would be huge.
In its current state, private PvP server are tedious to manage and player need to contact someone who has authority to setup a match.

  • This game mode is so boring, and the new Plunder Pass is too. I'm done playing it. You should either do something significant or end the game, because there's no point if you can't even make new cosmetics. And add new sea creatures. If it's because of a lack of funds or care, there's no point in playing anymore for me, in my opinion.

  • server browser. easy to set up game modes to play with friends with a couple minutes set up time at most. ai enemies from tall tales and adventures. older world locations as special locations such as golden sands and old boot fort. allow us to spawn in npcs and make them do emotes and other such things for making custom story content. if possible walking paths we can map out. ai crews. spawning enemy ships in such as skeleton and ghost. be able to create generic pirate npcs to fill out the world with people.

give us tools to play. to see places. to access everything we can offer ( i understand disney stuff is likely a no but no excuse for the rest ) and have in depth story content possible. we have models. we have animation. you have the abilitys with cut scenes we been getting in season 17,18 and 20. give us these tools to allow causals to have fun. and story tellers to tell more storys. would be a game changer for this mode.

    • This may have already been mentioned, but I also ask that locations from Tall Tale, Pirate Life, and The Legend of Monkey Island be added as lobby scenes. With Sea of the Damned and the city from The 3rd Tale, you can create a variety of scenes, from simple hide-and-seek games to SotShot photos

With Custom Seas we're allowing players to explore and play around with environments and characters we wholly own. This doesn't extend to A Pirate's Life or The Legend of Monkey Island, unfortunately!

We hear you; Season 20's main feature is Custom Seas, but we're still making small but meaningful changes to the core game experience too. In Season 20 we've refreshed the Season Pass, increased chances for Chests of Fortunes, and are experimenting with switching World Event Raid Voyages - all on top of an expanded calendar of live events.

Ah yes the most hated change ever, because you guys are Listening….

increased changes for Chests of Fortunes,

Yes it now became full rng if a world even has it, can be a good change but then if you think about it its the same dusty old world events we have had for years now (no reapers fort is not a new world event, its a skelly fort with a new lick of paint)

and are experimenting with switching World Event Raid Voyages - all on top of an expanded calendar of live events.

THE ONLY thing that kind of can show that you guys are somewhat listening because we have been saying for YEARS!!! That diving to voyages and events was a mistake. But yeah, you guys are really listening to insiders and your community as a whole. Again i remind you, misreading data and HEARING the feedback is not the same as listening

  • So, you are telling me you could create daily, weekly, or monthly all kinds of shenanigans with game editor like this, like creating an island full of snakes, or creating a sea swarming with skelly ships , or creating ultimate multi-boss ashen event with 20 ashen lords guarding some really special loot like bag of ancient coins or cosmetics, or treasure in deepest ocean guarded by thousands of sharks and sirens including all megalopolis and 4 octopods,

... and you decided not to do it but instead giving it to players?

It's not that you made a mistake. This will be forever game for me and my kids now. We just fought each other on separate sloops and had tons of fun. But you missed an opportunity to create, manage and admin custom game like this. Like, gaming professionals carefully crafting and creating entertaining content every week.

Now I have to do it, and honestly I am a bit overwhelmed with all this power, and maybe a bit sad to show my custom sea masterpiece only to limited numbers of my friends. Maybe we should have a Rare Special Custom sea weekly.

Okay see, no, this "We hear you" thing isn't going to work when every time you say this, you turn around and just keep doing whatever you guys want as if our voices don't matter. If you ACTUALLY hear us and want to let us know as much, please PLEASE fulfill the promise the devs made nearly a year ago during the July 2025 Community Direct and add Safer Seas Fleets, or revert the changes made to the season pass model, or half a dozen other things that any person with internet access could see just by browsing the Reddit, Steam discussions, or social media.

And before you say it, no, Custom Seas is not Fleets, I'm sorry. At least in Safer Seas you can earn gold and commendations, even with capped reputation. You earn nothing in Custom Seas and honestly it is a waste of time for non-content creators who actually want to earn gold, commendations and cosmetics. I did my seasonal deeds and, harsh as it might sound, I'm never using it again because I have no reason to.

Honestly, the fact that the team didn't think of tossing in true private servers (with gold/rep/commendations unlocked) with this update is baffling to me. It was right there.

I second the above! Also the ability to save an open session so all the spawn placements are saved (enemies, chests, gunpowder barrels, etc)

  • @oiva-kalli happening to me and my gf. Can't do anything, we spawn in and walk about 20 ft and immediately get hit with hazelnutbeard.

  • I dont know where else to put this but this feature needs a lot of work. There are several things that are not working, some things are fine but I am going to just preface things that need to change or that are just in need of adding.

Starting off, it feels borderline unacceptable for there to be no way to edit presets you made. You cant copy them to have an easier template, you cant fix them, you cant save your progress. It makes you have to make game modes in one sitting right now, which just isnt okay. This is not a method that respects anyone's time. Additionally, it takes nearly an hour, maybe more, to fine tune something because your UI uses sliders instead of (or in addition to!) text boxes. Who are the sliders for? On PC I end up having to use the arrow keys to get a finer tuned number. With the mouse, it just is wild and not well able to get where I want to, which really drags down something like trying to finely tune scores for a game mode. I have easily wasted 4 hours today, because I have messed with everything to my specification, went to save, and was told the preset failed to save, which booted me right to the menu. So, your feature just doesnt work when too many changes are made. At that point, what IS the point?

I enjoy what you can change so far, it feels like pretty decent control. I would like to see more things I could tune however, like the health of certain world event bosses from the preset menu, choosing specific island(s) for spawn points, being able to set if people can respawn or if they go into spectator mode after their ship sinks. There's more that would be good, like restricting what part of the map can be played, choosing if to play on the main map or at Tall Tale locations or even the map for Last Sloop Standing. Choosing to lock the storm in a specific place from the preset, that too would be good. Being able to set a smaller boundary and set the shrinking zones, and when they happen, that would also just be a boon to game mode makers.

Lastly, this just will not thrive without a way to share creations. Being able to host your presets is nice; we need a way to share game modes when the person who made the preset cant host at the time due to being busy. If you could share the presets online for people to download, and also have a server browser that these modes can be hosted on, we would be in business for sure.

I have not had a chance to play the rest of the update because being unable to make what I want 4 times in a row has just been a total mood killer. Please get to hot fixes as soon as possible if you expect this update to carry a whole season

  • Custom seas just feel like a one-shot gimmick. It is, on all marks, a stale immitation of what could be a custom server.

Any regular feature you would expect in a creative like experience is just not present. Any cusomization of game rules or ai behavior is simply not possible. Custom game modes is clearly a large selling point for the season, yet there is no custom event flags, listeners, or anything the allow a propper custom event. All there is are predetermined reward flags that doesnt really allow you to be creative, limited only to sells, damage and kills. For it being a "freely customizable experience" its INCREDIBLY locked down and restricted.

User experience is just not there... While im sure it't better than whatever the alpha custom server had its still bad. Why is the answer always a sectioned folder like setup? The sectioning in itself is awkward for alot of summoned creatures, why have a folder each ashen lord, containing the ashen lord, instead of just putting them together... This is the one thing I saw in insiders that seemed the most placeholder-esc, but no changes were made and the clunky menu was rolled out...

I hope this isn't the actual entirety of updates we are getting for season 20. Mostly because the effort put into s20 simply isn't worth an entire season. One of, if not THE worst thing in Sot right now is the menu spam, and this season only made it worse.
Hope we atleast get an update soon with some more features and better menu navigation

  • This game feels like if GTA kept putting out new content over a span of 8 years - but never gave its players more than one 2-seater sports car, one four-door sedan, and one pickup truck with which to consume all that new content with - and making a big deal out of ENDLESS paint job variants for those sole three vehicles. The cars are what makes GTA, GTA. It's right there in the name.

For me, Sea of Thieves's experience has felt stale for a long time. None of your new content matters to me, if I have to use the same g* d* ship to experience it with that I have for the past 8 years.

I'm not even asking for ships with bigger crew, more guns, more masts, faster, slower, etc. Obviously I'd be excited about those too, but at this point I'd take ANY new ship-related content - that isn't YET ANOTHER cosmetic. I'm aware that new ships with the above-mentioned core feature/attribute changes could disrupt game balance - fine. But folks...WAY more slupe, brig, and galleon type ships have existed than the three we've been limited to in this game for almost a decade. There's reference material for DAYS. Why, on Earth, have we not seen so much as, for example, a Chinese Junk-type ship with those fan-shaped sails that has the same crew size, gun/mast count, and speed as the existing models? What makes opening the coding "hood" of these "sea cars", pulling the player-visible body off of it, and using some fresh geometry on them, so difficult? What has caused you to be so resistant to this??

It's really frustrating. I think this game is great, and I've had so much fun playing it. But man...I'm immediately bored as soon as I step foot on the same freakin' ship, every time. This game could not exist without ships. And I'm immensely tired of using the same ones, and really annoyed that something as simple as some new 3d meshes (in comparison to big things like core game mechanics changes) seems to be something that you all have fired SO many shots in the direction of, and have hit eeeverywheeere EXCEPT it. Ship decoration trinkets and captaincy were great steps in the direction I'm asking for...but as far as the information you've given us, you guys stopped there.

I'm intrigued by Custom Seas but...you're still giving me more and more stuff to do and only the same 2-seater sports car, four door sedan and pickup truck to do it in that I've had for the past 8 years. And in gaming, 8 years is a LONG time.

I'm aware that I might very well be a minority feeling this way, but...I'm just not interested in going out and participating in any/all of these new activities and events if I'm bored to tears with the vehicle I have to use (and spend a LOT of time in) in order to do so.

    I. want. new. SHIPS.

  • I do like the addition of having custom seas. It makes the game easier to experiment with if you want to introduce many new people at once, or if you just want to practice trick shots. I do think it would be cool to see larger ship types, not in the sense of making new ships, but making it so that 1 ship can have many people. For instance, if a galleon and sloop form an alliance, the sloop crew, if having died on the galleon, could respawn on the galleon rather than the sloop.

  • @captwrath this is a really cool feature but for whatever reason my sessions crash a few seconds after loading into a custom seas server

  • @captwrath
I forgot to add in my last message:

    • the ability to add any QUEST item to your inventory. I'm not talking about fruits or planks, but quest items, like the shroudbreaker Stone from Tall Tales or the yellow cannonball that Wanda made for Tasha in the last adventure. It might seem like a small thing, but in the right hands, you can create a scene with this item in the hands of the pirate in the foreground, giving the photo a more cinematic feel.
