Why Wont Rare Release a Lite Version of the Game?

  • For the people who have a smaller storage space or low end PC why not make the updated graphics an optional DLC like other games? for people who cannot run on them or just don't have enough storage they will never see the high end graphics. It just kinda stinks seeing consoles versions sitting at around 35-40 GB and having to be stuck with over 100 gb on a pc that has only 500 GB of storage on it I find it ridiculous. I know you can hit me with the "skill issue" or "get a better pc" but I think it would likely get more people interested in getting it instead of needing to buy more storage or needing to buy a better computer or even having to buy a whole console.

  • Just checked and its 135 GB on steam... THAT IS INSANITY

  • This game is revolving around cosmetics. Cosmetics have models and textures. And there are tons of them.

Unless they find a way to make you download/unpack cosmetics you don't have on the fly per session, you won't ever get smaller version, cuz they keep adding items. Everybody playing the game needs to have everything installed cuz the game can't predict which players unlocked which items in a session - unless, as mentioned, the game does it on the fly per session.

Also, you can change cosmetics any time when playing the game. If someone else doesn't have those cosmetics unlocked, what then? The game would have to unpack it for them the moment you change your cosmetics?

This would require really strong texture/model compression, and would probably impact loading times, introduce stuttering, etc. It's just not realistic and feasible.

Unless they specifically release a low-resolution texture pack. For who? Minority? Just not worth the time (money) and effort.

Name me one live service game or MMO that's not 10-15y old (but younger), doesn't look like potato or minecraft, has 1k+ cosmetics (SoT had 950+ in 2024 according to google, now much more) and it's below 70-80GB at least. I'll wait.

So yea, we can only "hit you" with buy bigger storage lol. Cuz that is realistic.

  • Perhaps look into cloudgaming (or is that only for Xbox ?).

  • @r3vanns So why is the console version less than half the size of the pc version? do they not get all the cosmetics?

@r3vanns So why is the console version less than half the size of the pc version? do they not get all the cosmetics?

    From google:

"Sea of Thieves (SoT) requires less storage space on consoles (Xbox) than on PC primarily due to highly optimized, target-specific asset bundling, which avoids the need to include multiple texture resolutions and redundant files required to support diverse PC hardware. While PC versions often include high-resolution textures (4K/8K) to cater to powerful hardware, console versions are tailored to fixed, lower-resolution specifications. "

There's a reason why I mentioned compression. All consoles (apart from few different versions of each console) have the same hardware - so there's much much less variety, and it's easier to optimize for them.

  • @lem0n-curry I run on linux which I havent found any cloud gaming alternatives that can work with that OS and plus I dont wanna pay for a monthly subscription which was the whole reason I switched from console to PC since all consoles seem to go by microsofts subscriptions standards now-a-days

  • @r3vanns there is literally a toggle in game to just turn down the graphics and it looks and changes exactly to look like the console version when you do. saying they cannot simply separate the higher resolutions and textures that take up so much space and into a DLC like many other games do on steam and epic games is a bit silly.

What part of each texture/model has several fidelity levels you don't understand?

The game can't predict when or if you will want to raise the resolution of your textures on your PC. For that you need to have them installed.

So we're back to the beginning - the only way this would be feasible, is if the game would be able to download textures while the game is already running, when you decide to raise them.

Or to repack everything into "DLC" as you call it, for minority who's cheaping out on PC hardware since 2018. Not worth the money and effort.

Contrary to that, there are actually a lot people calling for the end of XboxOne support, claiming it's holding the game down 😂 they're also the minority, still though.

  • @r3vanns So what you're saying is as the minority it would be better if they just didnt worry about making MORE money of people who cant afford a high end PC making them have less money to spend on their game? okay buddy thats enough rage baiting pal

  • @gamerscottyt sp the fidelity pf assets (such as the cosmetics) is much lower on consoles. Because of the lower graphical settings on said consoles.

On pc you have the option to change the graphical settings, this is basically a simple set of sliders so on a whim pc players can change this and subsequently need the higher and/pr lower fidelity assets.

This makes it that the packaging size for the pc version will always be larger

Normally i would say dont worry about it because storage on pc is cheap, however with all the ai BS going on nowadays thats not necessarily true anymore

It's not ragebaiting for stating you obviously cheap out on hardware. Either switch to console then and not worry about it, or play small sized indie games lol.

Storage has nothing to do with high end PC. You can have 4TB on a trash heap of a PC.

Nobody needs to cater to minorities and waste resources and time (money) instead of being focused on improving the already troubled game, cuz they don't wanna invest a little bit of money on storage.

  • @callmebackdraft Exactly with that last statement right there pc parts are through the ROOF... but cool pfp btw

  • @r3vanns I said stop rage baiting buddy, you need to calm down pal

I'm perfectly calm, nice projection. 😂 Speaking of raging - who's fault is that only now you've figured, after the prices skyrocketed, you could use a bit more storage? I wouldn't say Rare's lol.

Just a year ago you could've easily purchased ok quality SSDs and NVMEs with decent storage space for $50-200.

You know it, I know it, everybody knows it. Yet I'm the villain here. 😅

  • @r3vanns Okay buddy whatever you say

    I think that runs anywhere.
I could play sot on my android phone, if I wanted.

  • They could make the instanced tall tales an optional download.
Big maps and unique assets for something you play through once then never touch again.

  • @gamerscottyt said in Why Wont Rare Release a Lite Version of the Game?:

@r3vanns I said stop rage baiting buddy, you need to calm down pal

Do you actually know the definition of rage bait?

  • For the people who have a smaller storage space or low end PC

How do these same people play other games which are more demanding that SoT?

  • @r3vanns said in Why Wont Rare Release a Lite Version of the Game?:

What part of each texture/model has several fidelity levels you don't understand?

What part about a separate low resolution only download don't you understand? If you never intend to increase the graphics to max then you don't need them installed

  • @gamerscottyt

You’ve probably already considered this, but I just wanted to point out that you could just upgrade your hard drive instead of getting a new PC.

  • Speaking of a Lite version, there is this game called Where Winds Meet. Fun game but has its own problems.

Well, they have their standard game version that's catered towards high-end pcs and has like 120+gb file size. But, they also have a lite version catered towards low-end pc that have a file size of less than half of the standard edition.

They also optimised the hell out of the lite version too without sacrificing the gameplay with all the special effects and all. Even now I still have no idea how I can play the game at almost 120fps on a 3050 budget laptop when I struggle to get 90fps on sea of thieves. (If you're wondering, playing on a standard version gives me 15fps with constant stuttering on the same laptop)

  • They really should deliver Tall Tales (at least the monke one) and high resolution textures as separate DLC pipelines, eg fortnite.
There are also a ton of duplication paks files due to UE texture streaming optimization for HDD users.
All of these things are not necessary and technically could be optional.

  • @sp1derc4t

    That be the better choice.
Remove all content related to TT and have maybe only SS allow access to them.
But would that even reduce size? Voice files, map locations, music, etc
