My understanding from the developer updates is that two of the recent changes (increase of FOV, and faster weapon switching) were effected because players were using cheats or exploits to get around existing limitations, and rather than consistently fight that, they chose to even the playing field for everyone.
It seems to me like the next obvious change on this list would be to enable a permanent crosshair (or just a small dot) that can be toggled on or off. Rare have already said that enabling a crosshair through monitor features or physical solutions is "not a bannable offence". This wording feels like an unnecessary grey area.
As things stand now, using a crosshair is an unfair advantage that any player can choose to have if they care more about winning than playing fair, or playing the game as it's meant to be played. I don't see how that is ever going to change, as I doubt there will ever be a software program that can detect a small piece of tape or blu tac stuck to your screen.
I'm not saying the game would be better with a crosshair than without. If there were a way to ensure that everyone was playing without a crosshair, that would probably be better. But since that's not possible, I think it makes sense to just even the playing field for all players.
