SoT Survey dilema

  • These so called surveys that Rare is basing their decisions on the last couple months is a big issue IMO.
I received the first one back in August, and while the survey itself was decent, the method of how Rare sends them out is a huge red flag. First, you need to be an Insider's, which is easy enough. Then you need to have your preferences set to receiving news and surveys, etc. from Rare. Also, not hard to do but not something I wager a huge portion of the community knows they need to do. Then you need to also keep an eye out for a random email that doesn't have a specified date on if or when it will appear. Most players already don't want to spend their time keeping an eye out for something like that. On top of that, I still have yet to receive the survey in my email and when reaching out to Rare support I was answered with a "I'm sorry we cannot help you on this occasion" - just WOW.

This is where the problem lies. Rare seem to be picking and choosing who they send their surveys to based on how they answered the previous survey or just randomly sending them out to some and not others. Although probably not true, they seem to be trying to cater to how they want the game to progress, under the guise of a "survey", I.E. they send email surveys out to everyone on Insiders the first time, then pick and choose who to send the second survey out to based on which ones matched their expectations in the answers from the first survey. If this is not the case, then why do they not just have a link on this website and the main game for any and every player to fill out? Also, why is it so hard to say when the emails will be sent out? Why are Insiders the only ones allowed to give their opinion on what they want to see from the game, in the survey? Also, why not show us all the statistics, like how many people exactly took the survey and how each question ranked up? It seems like they reported to us only cherry picked information.

Regardless, I think the way Rare is handling these surveys does more harm than good. The way they release the surveys means what the majority of the community wants is probably not well reflected in the survey results because you are not making it available to most of the player base. I would suggest doing what so many other games do, where players that have a profile receive a link we can access from our games main menu or a link on the official website tied to our profile, where the link should be found no matter what. It just seems like more funny business yet again and it's frustrating.

Ive never once done a Survey. But this new one I received 3 days ago I did. So...

Why are Insiders the only ones allowed to give their opinion on what they want to see from the game, in the survey?

At this point, WHO isnt part of Insiders?

  • @burnbacon
I would say that around 70% of the playerbase
    isn’t part of insiders

  • I would love to participate in the SoT survey and I am exactly the type of player they need to hear from. In the last 6 months alone I have gotten both hourglass curses and nearly all hourglass rewards from both sides. I max out 4 emissary ledgers a month every month. I'm nearly at distinction 5 reapers. I have 70% completion of the game. I have no clue when the hell the survey is supposed to arrive and I do other things with my time, I don't really check my emails unless I am expecting an important email, but there is literally no way to know when the survey will be sent out, and I am not going to pay attention to it every single day just to look out for one email.

  • @thamb0 stuff you described would require a lot of thought and work to send surveys to right folks.

I don't see Rare cloud pull it off. Not because they "good", nah its big company .
They just want to minimlaise work so they send stuff at random and thrn they will just throw survey to trash and proceed to do as they see fit.

  • I think the survey should also be send to non-Insiders, though I'm not sure if they ask for email permission when you get the game (that may be why only Insiders are getting them).

  • For clarity, the latest survey around toxicity is not limited to players signed up for insider but goes out to everyone who has signed up for email contact, something that was mentioned in the latest dev update.

Drew said that indeed, the confusion may be because Christina said a week earlier in the podcast of Oct 24th around 14:00 "You can in future, if you're an Insider and if you subscribe to our email marketing communications", which can be interpreted as you should be both.

Glad to hear it's not Insiders only !!

  • I would bet more on random selection for the recipients of the survey versus strategic deliveries to drive their narrative.

It's not like they release the results of the surveys anyways, so they might as well just lie about the results in mention instead of exhausting effort trying to pinpoint the correct audience as though that would somehow be more morally sound.

I think they try to listen to their players, but also want to 1). Continue to create the game that they want to create... And 2). Continue to create the game that will drive the revenue that daddy Microsoft demands. I'm guessing there are plenty of times where those 2 things conflict behind the scenes.

As someone who received/completed this SOT survey and others in the past, I can tell you that aside from people using slurs or derogatory language, there's very little I find toxic about any interaction in this game; and my survey results reflect that. I'm hardly the narrative player for driving less player interaction or a more "friendly" environment. My survey results reflect that as well and will continue to reflect that should I be one of the "lucky ones" in the future.

Always great to see back handed toxicity from the Moderator. My point was about optics and what it seems like they are doing (even if it's not the case), and how I wish they would just allow all players an easy way to fill out a survey like most games with polling and surveys. Heck, OSRS literally has poll booths for their surveys that anyone can access in multiple places. It's not that hard to implement.

For clarity: "The survey for Season 17 will be arriving soon, so if you’d like to participate and have your say, sign up to the Insider Programme and ensure your email preferences are on to receive the invite"

Also, I have my email contact set to receive emails from Rare, hence why I received the first survey from them a few months ago. Which is why it's puzzling that some people have received the latest survey all last week and some have now not.

  • @sweetsandman Ya and you're absolutely probably right, but the simple optics of how they run stuff, even a simple survey, makes it hard to trust them. Especially when I email them directly through support and it's met with "We can't help you".

  • @mopwieldinghedgehog So where is it? I've been signed up for emails, or at least I thought I had. I've been getting the email newsletter.

He kind of had a point though. You're making a mountain out of a molehill.

The first half of your post was about how if someone doesn't give Rare permission to send them stuff, or don't pay attention to their inbox, they won't get the surveys which seems kind of obvious? The second half was about how they are probably picking specific people out of the thousands that have enabled emails as part of some nefarious plot to get the answers they want that are never shared with the public anyways.

    Very tinfoil hat worthy.

It's way more likely to just be a random selection of users who opted into the newsletter rather than waste someone's time curating a list of survey recipients.

  • @thamb0 Note I was commenting on the most recent survey regarding toxicity and nothing else.

  • @thamb0 i promise you the surveys do not matter, this is not a democracy

  • As for surveys, making them personal (as in a personal link for anyone eligible) over it being a public link anyone can access does prevent brigading which can skew numbers. So personally I'd argue that you have a bigger chance of getting accurate feedback this way.

  • If there's a lack of trust in the survey process, it's understandable that some may feel hesitant to engage. That said, sharing your feedback publicly can still be a meaningful way to advocate for change. Making your perspective known helps foster transparency, though it's important to be mindful of how it's received.

I've voiced my concerns countless times about how Open Crew contributes to the burnout many players feel, especially those dealing with intense solo sessions. It’s frustrating when it feels like the system works against the kind of experience that keeps people engaged. At this point, I'm not sure what else I can do beyond continuing to queue and play through it. I just hope the feedback eventually leads to meaningful changes. 07

  • I also didn’t do the first survey but did the second, so the argument that you had to do the first one is false.

Bro, you're advocating toxicity from a Mod because of someone voicing concern, whether you think it's a valid concern or not. Classic expected behavior from you.
If you actually read what I posted you would see that I was saying the constraints to actually get the survey require a lot of extra work from players who would love to give feedback but might be too busy to constantly check their emails or they might've missed the post about joining Insiders and opting for emails. Even someone as myself who has checked all of these boxes and stays on top of it did not receive the survey. The multiple constraints on top of them randomly sending out emails to select Insiders, (or apparently everyone) just shows how silly the entire survey approach is being handled. WE get that you're on here 24/7 but the majority of the player base is not. So, having an easier system for the majority would make players feel more apt to contribute to stuff like filling out a survey. Regardless, have a good day.

And how would people know where you can find surveys, how would people know if there was a new survey ?

To me, them sending emails is the most efficient, robust and secure way of handling this.

You mentioned an in-game link, what about those who stopped playing because of toxicity, their answers matter and would be missing from the result.

Your OP was full of assumptions on how Rare (or whoever handles the survey and its results) mishandles sending out and interpretting the answers.

    E.g.

Also, why is it so hard to say when the emails will be sent out?

Because they are send out in waves, to make sure Rare is not blacklisted by google-mail and others as sending out spam.

Rare seem to be picking and choosing who they send their surveys to based on how they answered the previous survey or just randomly sending them out to some and not others

You're really wondering why someone posted a tin foil hat based on the first part ?

The latter part may be true, who knows, maybe they want answers of a percentage of active players and a percentage of people who played for some time and not currently (*). There are more inactive players than active players and if all of former (who are still opted in) answer the survey and only a few of the latter., I'm not sure if that would be good for the results of the survey.
IMHO answers (certainly from open questions) from both groups may help the game, but if there is a certain imbalance in those who report ,the answers of (closed) questions will be skewed.

You are probably right about them cherry picking answers to tell us, which is likely true for most surveys, a complete analysis would have taken more time than the podcast lasted. Also, they might be using the non-communicated answers anyway, that's what is important.
Not someone saying, "in the survey of three months ago the community said X, why haven't you done something about it NOW ?", while screaming Rare doesn't listen. There could be plenty of reasons why it isn't implemented yet (planning) or it will have some adjustment (to fit better in the game &c).

(*) This can also be a reason why they won't let everyone answer the survey, plus stop groups of people with an axe to grind or who have multiple accounts from skewing the results.

  • Sending emails out with survey has been a normal thing for years….
    But now it’s outdated?

  • @thamb0 Then you should probably watch the latest dev update as it has further information - clarifying that the toxicity survey is not limited to insiders only.

  • @thamb0

Drew Stevens just posted this on Twitter:

A lot of you reported not receiving our latest Toxicity survey, the team have tracked down and addressed the issue. This survey has now been resent to active players so check your mails!
Looking forward to seeing how your responces here can guide our future work in this space.

Also mentioning deadline of November 19th.
