I've been reflecting on the addition of the Pride flag in Sea of Thieves by Rare. While I have my own opinions, they aren't relevant here.
What stands out to me is that it’s the only inclusive flag introduced in the game so far. Back in June, when it first appeared, I assumed it was just the beginning of many more to come.
But as June ended and July arrived—Disability Awareness Month—there was no flag.
July passed into August—World Cancer Support Month—but still no flag.
August ended, and September came—World Alzheimer’s Disease Month—yet again, no flag.
Now it's October—Depression Awareness Month—and still, no flag.
I’d love to cut Rare some slack on this but I just can’t. They’ve chosen to include a flag that’s banned in certain countries, yet there’s no flag raising awareness for cancer, a cause that unites people globally? The implications are truly shocking! I want to give Rare the benefit of the doubt, but how can I?
Clearly, Rare prioritizes one movement over others. this is not representation, it's bias. I've patiently waited months to see if it was the beginning of more widespread representation of movements (and possibly religions too-they are as valid as the LGBTQIA movement)
I end my post today with article one of the pirate code, and a note beneath it.
The Pirate Code
Article #1: The Sea Calls to Us All
Everyone is welcome on the Sea of Thieves regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, nationality or creed.
(though it seems some people are more welcome than others, apparently)
