I’ve been sailing for a while and noticed that sails have little effect on steering outside of storms. Here’s a small, realistic idea that could make sailing feel more alive — without adding complexity.
Idea:
When a sail is turned more than 30° to either side, the rudder should slowly start to turn in that same direction if not held by the player — just like it does during a storm.
Why:
Right now, players can turn the sail 90° to the side, gain perfect forward visibility, and still sail straight with no drawback.
Using the same rudder-drift mechanic that already exists in stormy weather would make sailing feel more natural and balanced, without adding new systems.
How it works:
If the sail is angled 30–90° off-center, wind pressure slightly pushes the stern, making the rudder drift in that direction.
The effect scales with wind strength and stops when the player holds the wheel or re-centers the sail.
It’s not a new feature — it simply reuses the storm rudder-drift logic under normal conditions.
Benefits:
Adds realism without complicating controls.
Makes solo and crew sailing more engaging.
Encourages players to actively manage both sails and the wheel.
Balances the current advantage of sideways sails for better visibility.
