Encouraging Old Content

  • One of the biggest problems with SoT is the flash in the pan nature of the content. Huge engagement for a couple of weeks then it quickly trails off to almost nothing before pretty much nothing. For example, "Skull of Siren Song" & "Skull of the Banished", some of the best PVP I ever had, now none do it. Case in point: Last night I meet someone finishing the Skull of the Banished by getting a friend to take over another persons ship, just so he could "steal" the skull from them. Kind of sucks the joy out of the achievement for most.

    Solutions:
    DIVE/SERVER MERGE
For competitive things like Skull of Siren Song, make it a dive voyage. You dive to a server with a couple of empty spots once 2-3 ships dive in as well you get the start of the voyage message and the race is on.
This can also be done via server merges. From what I can tell the way server merges work is that if you are added to a server, you get the frozen screen and the poem as your ship & crew are transported in. This is why all crew have to be on the ship for the merge. If you are on server that has a ship merged onto it, you do not notice at all and you do not have to be on your ship. It has to be like this as I have completed a world event and then had a level 6 burning blade appear straight away. If this is correct, this means that Rare could merge crews doing certain things onto servers with other like minded pirates. So they could make a collection of 2-6 ships who have all signed up to do a Skull of Siren Song onto a single server without having to wait for people to leave servers. Similarly if you have done a Skull of the Banished voyage that night, you could be merged onto a server with something starting one or just completed one. It could even become a reaper voyage at grade 5, "hunt for commodities", "hunt for lost shipment", "hunt for gold vault" etc. Put down that voyage to merge to a server with someone doing that activity. Although a merge like that should also include a cue for the other ships to check their map for balance.

    MONTHLY DEEDS
Certain voyages or events are listed as Deeds, maybe 10 or so a month. To progress up the ladder you need to complete each one in order. Rewards can be things like extra rep/gold for completing the deed. Once you have done all of them, you get a special voyage or a couple of ancient coins. Not heaps but it may cause people to start doing some of the old content again.

    QUALITY OF LIFE:
For things like commodities. give us a buy all button to speed it up, change the skins on the commodities to have symbols on the crate. The location its bought from and who wants it. Basically take the chore out of the game, focus on the game play. I am certain there are QoL changes that would make other events more user friendly.

  • You say it sucks the life out of the achievement, but have you even seen 15 people doing that quest in the last month? They put cosmetics behind doing comms, but if no one is doing the quest for that comm, you will never be able to do it. Case in point: Right now, its literally impossible to do Rowboat Revelry commendations. Because this season changed all rowboats to kegs, there no longer is any rowboats for the comm. No coloured rowboats exist right now. You are literally being forced out of being able to complete parts of the game for months. They keep changing the game and making it so no one does a lot of the stuff, so people have to do that in order to be able to look how they want. If they have to wait 2 months to eventually POTENTIALLY find enough people and even then they still have to fight and steal it, and if the person cancels the quest you lose your chance to steal, and you need to be a reaper emissary to steal it, so they will see you coming too. It's just bad design.

  • @potatosord
My guess is that next season the row boats will be back, so that is not quite the same thing.

What I am looking for here is feed back on the suggestion. Would you vote or be more likily to vote on the Skull of Siren Song via the dive or merge mechanic? Do you see an issue with this suggestion not working.

  • For diving to a server where someone is doing or has just finished a skull of the banished quest would just make no one want to do that quest ever since you would have such a higher likelihood of people invading and attacking you. Most of the people who play this game are conflict averse, they do not want to fight other pirates. It would also make it easier for people to target players doing those voyages specifically. This is a game where Rare had to extend an event by a week and change the rules about how many players could do it at once because so many players were going to the end point of the voyage and camping it to make sure that players couldn't complete it. That is how this would end. It would drive more players away than in.

Rag and bone crates are colour coded to tell which outpost they have to go to. That would be a nice thing to add

Good points, but if you are in high seas you are signing up for PvP. I think I need to clarify.

The DIVE mechanic would just be SoSS. You sign up to do the SoSS and dive to a server. The voyage does not start until at least one other ship is also there. Thats when brigsbe starts her rant in the deck of the ship.

The MERGE mechanic could be applied to SoSS but is mainly for skull of banished. It requires you to first complete a skull of banished. THEN you may be merged into a server with another crew doing it. So you have to open yourself to being stolen from BEFORE you get a chance to steal. Not just dive directly to it. AND if you had not already sold, the other crew would have a skull to steal as well.

The HUNT voyage would suffer from your critique the most. So maybe it would work like this instead. Each day there is a different item that gives double rep/gold or some other reward. There is only one Reaper hunt voyage, for that item. This encourages some playerd to do those voyages, but players who maybe discouraged would only be for 1 day out of the month. Also the hunting reaper would not know which ship to go for, providing there was more than one emissary on the map.

  • @miserenz Playing high seas is signing up for the potential for PvP. Hourglass is signing up for PvP. I have had sessions that were over 8 hours where I didn't see another ship the entire time.

That's convoluted and annoying, requiring you to do something one way before being allowed to do it the other would just make no one do it at all.

  • @potatosord
Skull of Siren Song (SoSS) & Skull of the Banished (SofB) are both PVP focused voyages, designed for PVP. So its not just HG that signs people up activity for PVP. 8 hrs. no ship, sounds like you played safer seas by mistake or were on when no one else was. We have had periods with fewer ships per server b/c the game stability did not handle it.

This is behind the scenes, so while it would be convoluted on the programing side it would not be on the player side.

I guess there is a "before being allowed" for SoSS. So lets fix that with a timer, you vote on the mast, and it will not start until either 15 min goes past or another ship joins. Thanks for the feed back.

There is no "before being allowed" for the SofB. You would still get non-SofB crews trying to stop you from handing in your skull. All that happens with the MERGE mechanic is that you are increasing your chance of running onto another SofB player by doing one yourself. I fail to see how that would make no one do it all or even at a lower amount than which is occurring now.
