Xbox One consoles are slowing the developement?

  • Ahoy!
I'm writing this post to give some feedback regarding the game's developement. I know the team is working really hard to make sure we have stable builds, so the game goes as smoothly as possible. However, I feel like old generation consoles (Xbox One family) are not helping at all in that matter. We have last season as an example. Improving the Hunter's Call by adding new quests and adding wildlife has taken 3 months to fully go into live servers. I loved the new additions, but I missed having an improved Kraken fight, another sea creature and even more ancient shark variables. Also, we had a fishing event that added a new quest that is no more available.
Because of this, I have the feeling that developement is guided by Xbox One stability, so if anything new doesn't works on this consoles, it needs to be taken down.
What is your opinion about this? Do you think Xbox One is slowing down developement, or are there any other main causes?
Please, make sure comments are constructive.

  • PC min stats are lower than Xb1 stats btw.

  • IIRC it was Mike who said Xbox didn't hinder development.

  • No, it isn’t.

  • @th3-tater said in Xbox One consoles are slowing the developement?:

Naturally OP and players who are misinformed don't ever comment on this fact.

The game is nearing 10 years old. Their best bet is to have instanced areas and/or rotate things in and out of the main world.

  • Older consoles have no impact (they've said this repeatedly). As Th3 Tater said, the minimum specs for the game are lower on PC.

The game engine is the main limiting factor (particularly memory constraints) but Sea of Thieves is running on a custom build of Unreal Engine 4, so updating it to UE5 is not so simple.

My guess is that there are a lot of custom plugins and systems that they would need to find equivalents or alternatives to in UE5. It's not like Fortnite where Epic actually makes the engine so was able to justify the effort and resources in updating it.

I think Rare are doing their best with what they have in a decade+ old engine, even if the cracks have been showing for the last couple of years.

  • I think they should cut or slow down support for Xbox One entirely.

So removing an entire community of Xbox gamers?

I used to play on Xbox One, until I upgraded to S.

To be removed from this game would be heartbreaking.

I feel like I have so much more to say, but I just don’t think I can do it.

So the half-dozen preceding comments to your post ALL confirming that its been unequivocally stated a billion times by the devs that it's tied directly and solely to their own server limitations and has absolutely nothing to do with support to older consoles just sailed right over your little head, huh?

You just think we should cut support to an entire section of the community for no reason at all? How about we let them keep playing and simply stop support to whatever specific single device YOU'RE playing the game on? That might also solve the problem. Let's try that first!! 🙄
