PvE Pirates and Ships

  • As the seas are growing to be more ambient, maybe we can see the introduction of PvE Pirates, that play a rather interesting part in the game. Not only would these Pirates look like ourselves, but their ships can too. Leaving us Player Pirates to wonder if the Pirates we see out at Sea are a RealPlayer Pirate, or a PvE Pirate.

Perhaps maybe some of these PvE Pirates are just Merchant Sailors, whom dont wish to fight.. or maybe some PvE Pirates are out for blood. Understandable this feature is already here with Skeleton ships, however, we can tell if a Ship out at Sea is Skeleton Crewed or not.. A PvE Pirate Ship could stir things up amongst yourself and the crew.

  • Nah. It would make the game world feel too cluttered if there were NPC pirates everywhere. The Sea of Thieves is supposed to be a place barely anyone learns about, and even less survive to enter.
Adding NPC pirates and merchants would remove that 'Hidden between the folds of the map' feel.

Plus, it would be annoying to have to not only look out for players, but random NPC ships.
And not know if the ship attacking is a player or NPC.
And now have to be even MORE paranoid when on an island, because the chances of being attacked has gone up with the addition of NPC pirates.

    Are you talking about Npc?

  • NPC enemies like what OP is talking about is what made Pubg terrible. Bots that blended in and looked like real players etc.

  • I play PUBG as much as SoT. My buddy and I LOVE killing bots in PUBG, especially in Casual mode (My kill/death ratio is vastly improved versus Regular matches!). They've gotten better over the past couple of years, but are still pretty easy to spot, predict, and kill. We're waiting for them to begin driving and healthing each other up...

I've been playing SoT for over six years now. The seas are MUCH less chaotic and violent than they used to be, IMO; I rarely ever get messed with or chased, and am pretty much left alone. I'm 99% a solo slooper and like to kill time by sinking skelly boats and knocking over sea forts (trying to beat my fastest time from docking to sailing away). It's really sort of boring now. I'd like to see some sort of random AI type skelly bot like a PUBG bot on the water. A smarter predator sloop would be entertaining.

  • Why do I have a strong feeling we got a bored SS player here?

Nah mate, seas (both HS and SS) have just enough activities if you know where to look for them. And if you actually want to look for them.

  • I'm a newer player trying to level up gold hoarder. I see a ship kinda nearby. Is that a player, or an NPC, I can't tell. Do I risk leaving my ship unattended with all my treasure and supplies and try to find the X, or wait to see if they come over? Should I wait to see what they do? I don't know the answers to any of these questions, but I DO know I'm not going to just sit here and wait for nothing to happen or be sunk. You know what, forget this. I'll just cancel the voyage and go somewhere else, I'm not risking it.

I'd imagine this would cause a lot of frustration with both new and veteran players, who have to keep stopping what they're doing to deal with a possible threat.

  • @r3vanns Haven't touched Safer Seas in my entire 3500hr SoT lifetime so that strong feeling you've got is nothing. As my times on SoT gone by, the Seas aren't active as much. I love PvP and will never turn it down. This suggestion of bringing a new type of ship out at sea, that almost (not perfectly) looks like to be a Real-Player pirate could spice things up.

Example: I'm sailing with friends, we see a Skele Ship out at sea, in that very short sighting we get that feeling of "Oh, player ship" and its not. Just that split second of feeling can make a HUGE difference, add more Paranoia to the Seas should PvE Pirates become a thing.

Thats kind of the point im getting at. But, if you know you can deal with a Skeleton Ship threat, then you'd know you can take out a PvE Pirate. End of the day, Both Skele Ship and PvE Pirate would literally be running on the same mechanic, same loot, etc... Only difference mattering is they look almost alike, that of a Real-Player Pirate.

I just don't see what the point is, other than having players getting frustrated by constantly having to go back to their ship (or calling their crew back) over and over all because it could've been a player ship. It sounds like players would get frustrated, newer players or those avoiding PvP wouldn't be able to get anything done, and I don't think the developers want that for their playerbase. Skeleton ships look different for a reason.

If you're a PvP player as you claim to be, I wonder at what point you'd be back on forums complaining that PvE ships are boring cuz you keep running into them mostly instead of players.

If you were a PvE player, which I still think you are, this suggestion would make more sense. Coming from a supposed 3500h PvP lord, it doesn't. But let's play pretend.

Whether or not PvE or PvP player (or a mix), this is still just a bad idea.
