April Update - State of Play

  • --Update 12/05--

    Hey Everyone,

Following our update on Friday, we're back with news!

    Live Hotfix 12/05
This weekend's Insiders testing has generated sufficient data to verify the root cause of the issue affecting Diving to Experiences and our team has prepared a targeted fix for the Live game. We've rolled this fix out behind the scenes this morning into Live and have been monitoring the improvement in successfull server migrations as a result.

We'll be taking the game down for a short maintenance today (12th May) to re-enable Faction Battles and flush this hotfix out to all servers before bringing the game back up again.
The team will continue to monitor Diving as this fix settles into the Live game.

    Looking Ahead
It's worth us stating here that the system managing server migration is a complex one, and there are many real scenarios that can cause a migration to another server to fail. This system often runs at ~98% success rate for migrations across the whole game - and while that is considered a pretty stable experience, migrations may still fail at times. The critical step here though is that in addressing the root cause of this issue today, crews should no longer become stuck on a black screen when diving to an experience and if their migration should fail for whatever reason - they will be returned to the world safely.

While investigating this recent Live issue the team have identified further improvements to the system to better protect from future issues like this impacting the experience. Given the critical nature of this system, we'll be scheduling this work as a priority area behind the scenes.

Thank you again for your patience as we've worked to address this issue, we appreciate the impact this has had on your experience over the last few weeks and we'll be taking steps to harden this system for the future.

    --Update 09/05--

    Hey Everyone,

Following our update last week, we wanted to jump back in here and share an update on the steps we're taking to address the recent Live issues affecting Diving to Experiences.

    Update from development
This week the team has been digging further into the migration system and working to identify the root cause behind players becoming stuck on a black loading screen after diving.
This is a pretty complex system that handles a wide range of scenarios across the entire game, but the team has used the Internal, Insiders and Live player data to hone in on the problem area.

As it stands today, we now have confidence that we've discovered the root of the issue and the team is working on a fix. We'll be using Insiders this weekend to monitor migration behaviour and to further validate this as the root cause before we prepare to bring a fix to the Live game.

    Addressing the issue in Live
As we approach the launch of our upcoming Season and our release onto Battle.net®, our priority is to stabilise the Live experience ahead of time and ensure we have a steady foundation to launch from.

In order to do this, once we've built confidence from Insiders, we'll be scheduling maintenance and delivering an update that directly targets addressing this issue and in turn will also reenable diving to Faction Battles. We plan to target this early next week (Week commencing 12/05) and will confirm our timing as soon as we have those plans locked in.

I appreciate that we've taken the game down for maintenance multiple times since our last update and have had an extended window where Faction Battles have been disabled. However, we feel strongly that addressing this issue as our priority is the right approach and allows us to stabilise your experience in Live first and build our confidence ahead of our other updates scheduled for later this month.

    Festival of Fishing
As our Live game has been impacted by the issues experienced with diving and recent downtime during the Festival of Fishing, all players have been provided an additional Hunter's Rare Fishing Map and Merrick's Recipe Request Voyage to use before the event ends on May 12th.

Thank you all for your patience as we've worked through these issues and we understand the impact that this has had on the wider game during this time. We'll share more on the details of our planned hotfix early next week, so stay tuned on our channels for more info as those plans get locked in.

    ---Original Post---

    Hey Everyone,

Following our April update on the 24th, we delivered a further hotfix this week to provide some improvements and address a number of high impact issues in the Live game. You can read more on the specifics of this hotfix here (3.3.2.1)

While this hotfix improved key areas of the experience, many were disappointed to find that the recent 'black-screen' loading issues encountered when diving to an experience were not fully resolved as part of this update. I wanted to jump in here and share more information on this issue and the steps we're taking to address this.

    Diving To An Experience
In April's update we saw crews diving to an experience from the Quest Table or to a Faction battle from the War Map experienced both extended wait times and stuck loading screens.
After investigation the team discovered that server migration was failing behind the scenes in some scenarios, leading to players becoming stuck unable to exit once they began.

As this system manages the migration of crews across a range of different scenarios, we saw all of these player experiences affected such as Voyages, Tall Tales and Faction Battles.
We monitor server migration behind the scenes and saw our migration success rate drop from our usually very stable ~98% down to ~88%. While that doesn't sound like a large jump, given the sheer scale of migrations going on across the game at any time this is a significant impact.

The team identified a clear migration problem after reviewing the player reports and we prepared a fix to be delivered as part of the 3.3.2.1 hotfix. During internal testing we validated the improvement in migration, however knowingly at a significantly smaller scale of play. Players likely saw us call this fix out specifically as part of our social comms earlier in the week.
When we opened the game following the hotfix we saw players stepping into the game early still experience these stuck loading screens, however the scale of players affected was much less. Our overnight success rate is back up to ~93% but that is far from where we should be for such a critical part of the experience.

The team are back investigating the migration issues as a priority and i'll share more on our progress here when we have it.

    Faction Battles
While I shared some success rate statistics above for migration all-up, the impact on Hourglass play has been much more severe. Due to the need for two crews to migrate successfully for the majority of battles, the success rate here is much closer to ~50% which is resulting in a significantly impacted experience.
Again while our hotfix provided an improvement, Faction Battles continue to be heavily impacted and in our eyes are not at an acceptable quality play experience right now.

We've therefore made the difficult decision to protect players from this poor experience in Faction battles by temporarily disabling diving into a battle which will take effect as part of a short maintenance window today (2nd May). Crews will find they are automatically returned to the seas after diving and these Faction Battles will remain disabled through the weekend until a resolution to the issues can be delivered safely.
As above, the team are prioritising efforts here to address the root cause of this migration issue in order to return Faction battles as soon as possible.

    Kraken Encounters
In April's update the Kraken Encounter moved from a 'Main Event' in the World Event schedule to allow it to be present in the world alongside other events. This change would improve the rotation of world events, and provide a number of behind the scenes improvements to how servers are dynamically populated.
While this change intended to retain the same Kraken spawn frequency as before, it was very clear that was not the case in Live!

As part of today's short maintenance window (2nd May) we are rolling back the Kraken changes made, and in turn curtailing its recent aggressive spawn frequency. We still intend to make the previously shared improvements to this encounter, however will work on addressing the encounter frequency before you'll see this return.

Thank you for your patience here as we've worked to address these issues, the team are hard at work digging into the ongoing migration issues so that we can reenable Faction Battles and return to a more consistent diving experience as soon as we can.

  • Thanks for the transparency, it's always appreciated!

Hope the diving and faction battle issues can be addressed soon (outside of temporarily disabling diving)

  • @sonicbob Thank you guys for doing your best to improve the bugs!

  • So the death of hourglass is bugs ... Fitting.

  • We can still pvp outside of hourglass. So it all
    Good

But the poor kraken can’t get a break.

  • Thanks for all yall do! And keeping up with the issues.

  • As soon as HG goes back online, I'm grinding for my curse ASAP. I kinda feel like if I don't, I won't have an opportunity to get a curse at all...

Please don't shut down HG 🙏

  • Much appreciated Drew. Rest easy over the weekend!

  • Thanks for the update!

  • Appreciate the explanation/update. Always helps to know what is going on.
    Best of luck

  • Guys, they're not cancelling Hourglass. Let's not pretend otherwise. Arena's (rightly) not coming back and HG is pretty much a load-bearing cornerstone at this point. They've temporarily disabled it like they've done other features in the past to fix them and it's not the end of the world. If there's nothing else you enjoy about SoT except HG then go play another game for a little bit.

  • Thank you for the explanation.
I'll be making the most of open world PVP being fun again this weekend while hourglass is disabled.

  • The game is down bad and it's time to pull the plug. It's just problems left and right. Every patch, there are more issues arising. One thing fixed, 2 things broken. Diving is still broken. Lost grade 5 flag and supps while trying to dive to the new limited voyage. Saw the same thing happen to Boxy. Streamers are getting fed up and playing other games.

Either need to start fresh with a SoT 2 (and abandon old gen xbox) or abandon SoT altogether and focus on Everwild.

That would of been a viable ''conspiracy'' if it weren't for the fact Mike Chapman just very recently stated they plan on expanding the games life for the foreseeable future (Beyond the intended 10 year mark).

They are just going to continue down this route of a broken game and putting Band-Aids all over it whilst delivering the same playbook and convincing the average player that they are fixing ''x'' thing and giving them hope.

I fell ''victim'' to just that back when they mentioned hit registration improvement and ''looking in to ways to improve it'' in god nows how many patch notes over the years before finally removing it because it started to become a joke in some communities when hit reg was really bad. If you guys remember that time it was mentioned at the end of every patch note...
I would tell my friend, it would be patched soon, then the months rolled by and it never did, they do this every time to every other problem it's a pattern a lot of us see through now.

Every vet have seen at this stage now if you bring it up to them and if they read patch notes through the past you can see it your for youself...

Really I wish RARE followed suite of other games currently that have been working and are actually upgrading to UE5 after being stuck on UE4 for years on end (Look at Squad) as a prime example.
They might be, we will never know, or like I said just above, just keep plastering this game with band-aids until it's finally time to pull the plug off life-support in say 2032...

I say this because despite a declining player base this game still has a big player base that are hardcore fnactics at hearts. It's heard to tear away emotions to a community game. That's the advantage that the game has.

  • So far. Yes. Hourglass is disabled and kraken spawns are reduced (3 hours only fought the girl twice)

As for battles. Every ships on the sea seems to be doing fine with fighting each other. (Saw. 3 galleon fight over a fort. Rare sight)
So maybe…hourglass doesn’t need to be a thing? After all, people only play it for the curses and not actual pvp :p

  • Can We Talk About Cheating and Game Feel?

Some interesting fixes are coming soon, which is great to see, but I think it's time we had an honest conversation about cheating and core gameplay feel.

A lot of players who resort to cheating aren't doing it to ruin the game; they're doing it to access features they feel should already be available. Take quickswapping, for example. It’s often labeled an "unfair advantage," but if that’s the case, why not just normalize it by adjusting the weapon swap speed so everyone can use it? Level the playing field instead of locking mechanics behind exploits.

Another major issue is FOV. Many players resort to third-party tools simply to increase their field of view or improve visual clarity. The current 90 FOV cap feels outdated. This is 2025, and most modern games support up to 120 or even 140, which is something SOT should include. Why not allow a higher FOV range and let players customize it across the board, whether on foot, sprinting, at the wheel, aiming, or using cannons?

Lastly, combat feel needs attention. PVP often feels clunky and delayed. Your weapon doesn’t fire when you expect it to, and that kind of input lag just doesn’t exist in most other games.

Implementing changes like global quickswap speeds and expanded FOV settings would not only reduce cheating but likely bring more players back. These aren’t radical requests, they’re quality-of-life improvements that modern players expect.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

  • @sonicbob
Thanks for all your hard work!! I know this is frustrating for everyone, we appreciate what you do.

Hourglass is not disabled. Diving to a faction battle is. Players can still hourglass in adventure and hunt the opposition normally.

  • Thank you for the hard work you are doing to make the game a fun experience for us! I hope we can get HG back again soon, still working on my gold bones and gold ghost!

As far as server migration being an issue, we did have a long loading screen where we were "stuck" and lost our boat mid server merge too, so that migration issue makes sense. Hopefully the crashes are resolved as well! ☺️

Basically 2 ways for HG rep right now

Either Hunt Reapers for Guardians or Play as Reapers for Servants, Collect a ton of flags then Turn on HG before you sell.
Or convince someone else to use their HG and duke it out without the dive. (or you know if someone wants to give you an HG win as they log off, that too)

  • I really appreciate the transparency and the clear breakdown of the challenges being addressed. It's great to see the team's commitment to improving the experience for players. Hoping for a smooth resolution soon!

  • @jeffjordan93

How do you hunt without faction battles?

  • @arkdragon45

They disabled diving, not the entire hourglass.

You can still vote it up, you just can’t really get matched unless you find an opponent in open world.

  • Really appreciate the current communication on issues. Sometimes there is a certain darkness before you see the stars.

On a side note, I threw hourglass up just to see what would happen today. Sailing around as a one life ship with no chance of invasion felt rather interesting. I think there's something in that to expand hourglass to a wider audience.

  • This is really not acceptable for such big studio with a 7 years old game.

3 weeks in and HG and performance are still a big mess and you guys release 2 patches that done nothing, there is something wrong with your QA and how you ship feature, this is definetily not the first time and it's amateurish to say the least.

Now remove Rare and replace it with Ubisoft or Activision, that would have been a much bigger backslash...

  • @arkdragon45 By hunt, I meant hunt Flags. Hunt down players with reaper flags for Guardians and Athena flags for Servants (I think other flags work too for Servants but not 100% sure). Then when it's time, activate HG and sell all the flags and get rep from the flags. No streaks or win rep but better than no rep at all.

  • Appreciate it , is there a way you guys can also address the Que blocking problem sometimes when you dive to hourglass and your by and outpost if someone spawns in it will stop you from being able to find a match .

  • @BurnBacon all people do in adventure is run nobody even fights anymore the only people able to pvp are sot partners that have servers and can set up scrims

  • Hoping to receive compensation for our factions. Quite a blow to the PVP community. I do appreciate the detailed response. Thank you for changing the kraken encounters, it was unnecessary.

  • @scorey-gz I pvp all the time and catch runners all the time

  • @burnbacon speak for yourself. There's a large portion of the community that have both gold curses that actively play everyday and almost exclusively dive.

Maybe don't speak for other players when you aren't sure what you're talking about.

  • At what point are we going to address that this is a common issue on update days? Like it's literally a meme among the community that "what's the bug that's coming out with this update"

Is there some sort of plan to try and solve this from being the ongoing problem every single time we get an update?
