Gambler's Den

  • I love friendly interactions in this game very much, and the funny, low-stress are some of my favorite memories. So I propose a different kind of PvP: mini games. This could take place in the form of a Gambler's Den, with games like Friendship & Betrayal, or maybe utilizing the Gambling Wheel. Card games would fit well too, as well as chess. This would give people with a lot of gold something new to do with it, as I think you should be able to place bets. I don't know what the logistics would look like, but I think it would be a fun idea. :)

  • @tyraannys UK law and our gambling restrictions would increase the game’s PEGI rating to 18+.

  • @tyraannys genuinely one of the best ideas I've heard. I think it would also encourage people not to immediately just kill one another if there was a chance for a different kind of interaction.

  • @tesiccl that's only if money etc is involved. Mini games that only involve in game currency that have no and cannot be bought with, real money, doesn't count.

  • @neuromnemonic incorrect.

Check out PEGI’s own definition below: https://pegi.info/what-do-the-labels-mean

    GAMBLING

”The game contains elements that encourage or teach gambling. These simulations of gambling refer to games of chance that are normally carried out in casinos or gambling halls. Some older titles can be found with PEGI 12 or PEGI 16, but PEGI changed the criteria for this classification in 2020, which made that new games with this sort of content are always PEGI 18.”

Nothing about it having to be real or in game currency.

While this is technically correct as it currently stands, PEGI are looking into making changes to how it judges the criteria. This is a recent statement from PEGI when it reclassified Balatro and Luck Be A Landlord to PEGI 12:

At this moment, any teaching or glamorisation of simulated gambling automatically leads to a PEGI 18 rating. On the basis of these appeals, the PEGI Experts Group will develop a more granular set of classification criteria to handle gambling themes and the simulation, teaching and glamorisation of gambling in different age categories, which will now include 12 but also keep 18 as an age category for games that simulate gambling typically played in casinos and betting halls.

So, while it doesn't necessarily mean we'll get gambling-style games in Sea of Thieves, it could be less likely that it would automatically be hit with an 18+ rating for just the games themselves.

However, unfortunately for the OP, any kind of placing bets, real money or fake, would likely get the game classified as 18+.

  • @realstyli interesting! I don’t know much about that game but I understood it was hit with the 18+ rating.

Personally, I’ve always felt the introduction of dice and cards via the emotes as tools are a far more natural way of dealing with OP’s issue. Players can make up their own games and therefore skirts but doesn’t break the PEGI restrictions. Plus it also means we can be mobile with the games we play and not restrict us to a “gambling hall”. More “game based” emotes would be my preference.

  • @tesiccl yeah I'm learning a lot here too, just been prolifically googling since you dropped their definition.

But yes perhaps a way around this would simply be games over gambling. Achievement and commendations could still be gained. So rewards instead of risk/loss/gain scenarios.

On one of the pirates of the Caribbean tall tales some skeletons were playing chess, so wouldn't be too far out there to include similar games.

  • @neuromnemonic chess and a role playing game (D&D variant possibly) can be found in one of the skeleton camps/the reapers hideout. So these games can exist in game!

I think you’re right; games and sports that can be competitive, but nobody has to bet any money while they play, keeps the devs within the rating boundary and give players some risk free fun to be had.

  • It's hard couse countries have wild regulations about gambiling in game check how many EU countries have blocked RDO poker or slot machines in Fallout 76.

  • I love the idea of playing games with other players, playing cards as you make your way down to your voyage, a chess match at a outpost with an enemy, seeing what the player base would do with them would be great. I’d also like to add little in game cheats for them, it is a pirate game after all and it would be funny to see the fights brewing over a game of checkers.
