  • I think the game will just continue down the same path.

Cheesier gameplay loops, reward flooding, just general farming more than risk/reward.

What something is officially called and the reality of the experience can be two different things in SoT. I dunno if they will ever make something officially a 1:1 experience while safer but high seas is safer by the season. Especially for people that aren't solos.

At some point the safer seas enthusiasts (that prioritize reward) might just accept what high seas has become. They just gave people a mountain of gilded/luck voyages over weeks of bonus events. They are shoveling the reward out to people, people are either gonna capitalize on it or they won't.

Literally everyone could have done alright with at least one of their merchant gilded voyages in high seas, had very little risk to it and was pretty quick, very profitable. + a luck voyage on top of that. If you want low risk/ high reward it's available throughout the seasons in high seas.

  • SS become HS? What the point of HS then?

No! High Seas is the game of SOT, Safer Seas is just an extended tutorial.

More like High Seas, as in a PvPvE pirate game and not an extended tutorial? You’re in luck, you can just log into High Seas.

  • I could see them allowing captain ships and access to the sovereigns. There’s not really a gameplay reason to not do so except to intentionally keep Safer Seas just that much more unattractive vs High Seas. I expect over time, the devs will make Safer Seas more comfortable for folks who have zero interest in even being in the same waters with PvP players, no matter the progression caps that entails.

As for the progression caps, I’d like to see them raise the company caps to 40 again, just to grant access to more variety of the PvE quest available without having to suffer through High Seas grinding to unlock them.

But I don’t see emissaries going to Safer Seas. The Emissary system is a baked-in part of the PvP aspect. You become an emissary for the increased reward payouts—but that increased reward is accompanied by increased risks. There would be zero added “risk” for an emissary in Safer Seas. Kinda like how it would be pointless to allow for Reapers in Safer Seas.

This is like saying “Dark Zone IS Divison/Division 2.”
There are a lot of things SoT has going for it that PvP actually harms the experience for. It’s got a very decent sailing experience, even if it is Arcady. The treasure hunting and battling the skellys/spirits and the skelly/spirit ship battles are well executed. The devs have spent a lot of time building a world and lore that is worth exploring.

The need and anxiety to keep yourself constantly on-guard and constantly on a head-swivel to rush through a fight/hunt and cash in actually detracts from the above appeal of the game for a certain type of personality when on the High Seas.
The NPCs don’t invade your ship and lurk waiting to ambush you.
The NPCs don’t sail up and sink your empty ship anchored at a port just to screw with you.
The NPCs don’t get on mics to insult and make fun of you.

  • Personally, I love spending time on Safer Seas. I already got the hourglass curses, I did the Tall Tales, got Pirate Legend, got my distinctions and rings, and I play Sea of Thieves for myself.

For me, Safer Seas is much more than an extended tutorial, it's a place where I can relax, chill and play at my own pace. I am fine with the current state of Safer Seas, and if I have to manually run towards each vendor to sell loot as long as I don't have to interact with other players then so be it. I avoid player interaction like the plague and that's not because I want to lose loot, but because I am tired of players not differenciating between playing a game as a pirate and thinking they are indeed a pirate. Steal my loot? Ok, that's fine. Calling me names? That's where I draw the line. Some even just want to sink easy target because they can, they even sank me at a spawn when I was leaving the port. I clearly didn't have loot, I didn't want to occupy the outpost because I was leaving, not even being the one that shot first, not even a flag, nothing just default supplies and I was leaving the outpost. Is there any reason why would someone want to sink a fresh spawn other than because they can? That is not even pirating nor stealing as a thief, just sank a sloop that was leaving the port so they can sell loot if they feel paranoic. I'm done with player interactions in the game, and that's why I will remain in Safer Seas, I have fun there and the skeletons, ocean crawlers and phantoms keep me entertained, unlike other players who just stress me out.

The entire game is baked in the PvP aspect. Everything in this game is meant to be fought over as far as I can tell. Some just have a really hard time losing anything in video games. Everyone should be sinking in this game just about every session, that's part of the game. Many just can't accept that, they feel entitled to everything without playing the game for it.

  • The game design and intent for Sea of Thieves is a shared world adventure, and it always will be. Those who wish to play in the confines of Safer Seas will always have the option but we will not bring the rewards and activities in line with those of High Seas when many of the restrictions are in place due to the risk vs reward factor that is inherent in Sea of Thieves - removing any risk means rewards must be balanced accordingly.

Safer Seas will act not only as a safe space for our Tall Tale players but also for families with children who just want to pirate, for people who want to play the game but learn the ropes and it will organically feed into Adventure mode, keeping the player pool there healthy and upskilled as they've learned the mechanics.

This is not only useful for new players but also families and players with accessibility needs - the whole game suddenly becomes available in a way it hasn't before, letting them naturally progress to High Seas and become a Pirate Legend. SoT has grown a huge amount in 5 years and it can be fairly overwhelming.

The borders put in Safer Seas mean that to experience the full depth and breadth of the game you will have to hit the high seas BUT if you're playing with your family you don't have to, you can just enjoy the game and have fun as a family.
