Plunder Pass and Revenue

  • I’m no expert but if players can earn 250 ancient coins every season pass and an additional 750 ancient coins if they purchase the Plunder Pass once doesn’t that mean every Plunder Pass from there on out is essentially free if no ancient coins are spent on anything else?

I personally own every Plunder Pass and I can’t remember the last time I had to purchase additional ancient coins.

I thought you were in the business of making money? Is it really asking too much of players to contribute $10 every season if they want premium cosmetics?

Here’s my take on a solution that doesn’t involve taking away any ancient coins that can be earned for completing the seasonal pass and reaching renown level 100.

You know how in order to purchase charity sails, players couldn’t use existing ancient coin and instead had to purchase the charity sails with currency instead?

Change the Plunder Pass so that it cannot be purchased with existing ancient coin and instead has to be purchased for $9.99 or whatever the equivalent is in your country.

Players can still earn the 999 ancient coin every season but can NOT use it to purchase the next season’s Plunder Pass. They can use the 999 ac on anything else they want in the emporium.

Now someone like me who will own every Plunder Pass regardless because I think it’s a good value will spend $10 every season instead of $0.

If revenue is becoming an issue this is the first change I would consider making if I was Rare. I don’t think it’s too much to ask players to support the seasonal update model with a $10 purchase every season if they want the premium cosmetics. You know, the cosmetics that will eventually make it to the emporium but cost 3x as much to buy.

P.S. This idea comes from the same person who has always advocated for a better safer seas and the option for solo players to join a server with other solo players exclusively.

  • there hasn't been a plunder pass in a while where i looked at the skins and thought they looked good enough for me to spend money on

the emporium skins are always 10x better

  • The only plunder pass that generally breaks even is the one that runs over Christmas, where they give you extra AC.

All other plunder passes are around 750-900AC, usually less than 999AC required for the pass, so you'd still need to buy additional coins eventually.

  • The thing about SoT is that it easily has one of the most ethical and consumer-friendly business models in this space.

To maintain it as consumer friendly they gotta bring the costs down, not increase the cost to the consumer in different ways.

I don't know what kind of condition this business is in outside of what I can clearly see, so I don't know what kind of options they even have,

but in general, it would make more sense for them to have updates that are less complex and ambitious (and less expensive) and more just a stable flow of fun content to mess around with for a month.

Probably somewhere in between monthly updates of the past and the current season design.

A big part of this game's success is that it's a really good deal for people without a lot of money. That needs to stay as a part of the foundation of SoT. Bring the costs down for development, not up for the consumer.

  • I’m assuming the Plunder Pass is one of if not the most purchased item in the emporium.

And Rare gives it away at a discount or free every season and it’s only $10.

Rare you’re missing out on revenue. Easy money.

There is no better deal on emporium cosmetics than the Plunder Pass.

They have been breaking even for awhile know. going back to atleast season 8.

  • @captain-coel I admittedly haven't been keeping track, so if they've been breaking even for awhile I wonder if they are trying to compensate for more/less cosmetics (not really tracking that either) or because of the frequent delays that have been plaguing the game since S7.

It's also possible that a lot of people spend AC they get from the season and need to buy more anyways for the next season.

I'm sure if they weren't making money they would have changed the pass structure awhile ago.

  • A lot of other games do the very same thing.

Purchase pass, play 100% and earn credit that is equal enough to buy next seasons pass.

But the thing is. Not everyone finishes the pass so, they don’t get the credit needed.

  • @eastthread51441 Lots of games do it and for the first 8 seasons the only pass that paid for itself was the Christmas pass, so 6 of those seasons they always made a profit. But people complained how other games paid for themselves and we wanted all seasons to do the same. The research obviously showed it was worth it to make the permanent change or they wouldn’t have.

  • @abjectarity

Obviously. Rare doesn’t need business advice from a random person from across the pond. Clearly they know what they are doing and I’m sure revenue isn’t an issue.
