SoTShot Twitter

  • Ahoy !
I'm a young french pirate fan of the game, and the SoTShot contest on Twitter. I know you have a lot of work to do right now, between bugs, updates, ...
That's why I'm proposing to elect the SoTShot winners myself on Twitter. It'll be half the work, since you'll only have to elect the winners on Instagram. Every day, I'll suggest the photos I think are good, and at the deadline, the photos of those who could win on Twitter. I may not have a lot of experience, having joined Twitter in June, but I do have a certain sense of imagination, and I think my choices would be fair. I'll propose contest themes, I have already an idea for the next two contest themes.
I hope you'll accept my proposition.
See you soon on the seas ! (and I hope on Twitter !)

  • You do realize that almost no company will hire an untried complete stranger with 0 work history in customer-facing positions, such as marketing, to manage what is essentially one of the most forward-facing positions they have?

For all they know, you will give the rewards to your own alt accounts, or to your friends. Or start blasting out slurs to make Rare look bad because you secretly hate the game.
And no; 'But I said I won't!' is not an iron-clad guarantee.

Also, the people working on fixing bugs are not the same people managing the twitter. So you're not reducing their workload, since you're asking for a position someone else already has.
Probably someone with more experience in said job.

  • @guildar9194 Thanks for your positive reply. I think you've just not understood my aim. Don't need "marketing experience" to post 4 screens, I just want to help SoT. And if I offer them a service, I won't be a "stranger" anymore. I come to talk about help and you talk to me about insults, what ???
Anyway, I don't know who you are, except that you're "an untried complete stranger" to me too. :)
    Have a nice day

  • The Community Managers are the ones who run the Twitter and SoTshot competitions and such, they aren't code developers. The code developers are working away on the game while CM's manage the social side of things, they have it under control!

  • @victus222 you can apply for a job at rare here:

It seems like they are not actively hiring just have speculative job openings and none of those are social media focused

  • @victus222 'I think my choices will be fair'

    Well I'm convinced

Marketing and being able to project a positive face is crucial when interacting with a company's customers.

I just want to help SoT

Yes, but you're asking for a community-facing position who's actions reflect on the entire company.

And if I offer them a service, I won't be a "stranger" anymore.

My point being that complete strangers to the company, with no resume for such an important position, don't get it just by asking.

I come to talk about help and you talk to me about insults, what ???

Nowhere did I insult you, but you proved my point; You got hostile and assumed I was being hostile.
Something someone in control of Rare's SoT Twitter absolutely cannot do.

Anyway, I don't know who you are, except that you're "an untried complete stranger" to me too. :)

Ah, sarcasm because I told you some facts.
Strike #2 for being in control of Rare's SoT Twitter.

A community manager (The type of person who'd run a contest or control a company/game twitter) has to watch everything they say. Literally Every. Single. Word.
Because the first clap or clapback they do in a moment of pique makes the entire game/company look bad.

I'm sorry to bring you bad news, but they aren't going to give some random fan control of a contest, or their twitter, just because that fan asked.

It's usually a role reserved for either someone at the company, or a community manager with years of positive interactions within the community showing that they are a safe person to have in control of something so crucial to the game and/or company's image.

  • @guildar9194 dude this is embarrassing, rare ain't gonna give him a job, stop giving him trouble. He's just here having a good time and trying to get involved, this did not require a distertation. Forums need some positivity.

As a Visionary Artist of the Seas (10 sotshot wins), I’m just going to say right now, Rare don’t need your help with judging the competition. It’s been going for a number of years now and it’s been very successful in how they’ve handled each theme and dealing with the winners. A handful of the community managers and the person responsible for starting the competition are those who judge it each time.

If you want to officially get involved, I’d apply for a job with Rare, or take part in the competition and see if you win.

    Good luck!

  • One way Rare could improve SoTShot is by making a dedicated section on their website where you can submit a link to your Twitter / Instagram post or make a point to like/comment on every submission.

Otherwise to me it feels like they might have never seen your photo - there is no feedback to say, "Hey we saw it!" - which makes it feel like it's not a fair competition if only some of the entries were seen. Instead they're just going to keep seeing the same people who win every time because they have a bigger following or more Twitter/Instagram presence.

They explicitly say on every theme that all you need to do is @ seaofthieves and use the hashtag #SoTShot and your entry is valid. They don’t need to be more clear.

Absolutely incorrect. Many accounts win that have little to no following. 1 account recently won that had zero following and followers. The pictures are picked because the judges like them, not because of popularity. That is a coping myth that salty pirates have come up with because their entries haven’t won in the past.

The quality bar has been set high by previous winners so if you want to stand out, you’ve got to come up with something that’s really eye catching and fits the theme perfectly.

    Good luck!

  • @tesiccl
I mean the people with big following pop up in the feed the most so it just feels like they have higher exposure / friends of the judges.

Just the way I felt because I'd never had Twitter or Instagram before and had never tried submitting before. So as a noobie that doesn't know anything about how these systems work (x/ig), to not get a confirmation that anything has been seen at Rare you feel left out of the competition. They maybe are checking every single one, but you can't really be sure - they could see a handful and say alright that's enough. 🤷‍♂️If you lose because you lose it's fine by me this is how competitions work. But the only way to know if they've seen it is if there was an effort to like or make some comment. They don't have to say anything about the submission itself, just comment a checkmark or something it would take only a second. A little communication goes a long way.

Anyway the experience just makes me not want to try again and that's my 2 cents how to improve the SoTShot competition.

  • @bleu-solo The whole point of having people add the #SoTShot (or the equivalent for whichever contest is running) is that every one of them is seen.

Likes on submission posts are not taken into account, otherwise, those with the largest followings would always win, rendering the 'contest' near pointless.

  • @bleu-solo I understand that reassurance, but rest assured, your submissions are seen, I can say that after taking part for the last 8 months.

Mod is right though, it’s not a popularity contest, just what shots stands out and fits the theme best.

It’s always worth to try your hand at winning. More competition is healthy and you never know, you might win and get yourself a beautiful set of sails!

  • I agree with the two comments above, but I will add that sometimes the winners are a bit absurd due to the fact that there are more worthy works among the participants :)

  • @odin299 unfortunately that’s just judges taste and what they like. If you can work that out, you crack the code!
