Luring Call of Siren's Song

  • Suggestion: Singing Sirens lure player pirates towards them

Sirens in Sea of Thieves are a really interesting enemy. Like sirens from the legends and myths of our world, the sirens of the Sea of Thieves are known for their songs. These songs herald their arrival in open waters, at shipwrecks and along the coasts of islands. The song can damage players and heal fellow sirens. Sirens in the lore of our world use their songs to lure sailors to their deaths. I think this would be a really fun mechanic in-game.

I would like to see a mechanic where when a Siren begins to sing, it causes the pirate closest to it to begin to walk towards it. If that is too much, then perhaps just a certain percentile chance to be drawn to the Siren would suffice. The Siren would begin singing, and it would cause the afflicted pirate to begin humming along to the song, put away items, and start walking towards the source of the song. The song could be interrupted by damaging the Siren that is singing.

This game already has mechanics which remove a player's control over their movement; the drunkenness effect from grog, Chests of 1000 Grogs, and Grogballs. This mechanic seems like it would not be outside the realm of possibilities. The effect could last maybe for only a certain amount of time, maybe 15 seconds or until the Siren is damaged. The effect would be simple. The Siren begins singing, and the afflicted Siren has their vision go slightly blurry or have a misty blue particle effect in front of their eyes that shows they are charmed. The pirate could also start humming along to the siren song(something I think a lot f players already do when they show up). This would show both the afflicted player and those around them that they've been seduced by the Siren's Song. At this point, the game would force the pirate to turn toward the Siren that is calling them, and begin moving toward them at a regular pace. The pirate would begin walking in a straight line toward the siren for the duration.

This mechanic would add a slight extra challenge to siren fights, which are fairly uncommon. Pirates drawn into the water could end up drowning, hit by sirens, or falling victim to damage from the song itself at closer ranges. It could be countered by going below decks, where your pirate would only walk in a straight line into the hull of the ship to comedic effect. The song would work much like getting sucked into the air by the kraken, forcing you off of cannons or sails. It could also be countered by voting to lock the afflicted player in the brig where they could do no harm to themselves. This would be a fun reference to the story of Odysseus, specifically when he encountered Sirens with his crew. In order to save themselves, they were tied to the mast. Locking the pirate in the brig for the duration would have the same effect.

All in all, Siren songs having a luring, pacifying effect would be a mechanic that already has similarities to other effects in-game, would tie in nicely to real world siren lore, and add some extra challenge and entertainment to siren fights.
