  • @wa1martcustomer aim for the cannon line and take out the gunners. Supply your ship up. Sail at half mast for control and speed. Don’t be afraid to be aggressive. And most importantly, if you lose the match you can always try again, it’s not the end of the world.

  • Practice is how any performance is improved.

Pvp in this game is largely mindset because it's fight after fight after fight. For most people there is no prize fight to train for, so it's all just practice. There is no big game for a large majority of players.

With that in mind there should be no stress. Burnout is everyone's worst enemy in this game. Not maintaining the journey, getting too upset about outcome of a game, too invested in status around the community. Making it something more than it is, it's just practice for a reward that will eventually show up whether you win or you lose.

Every person that struggles with pvp in this game does so because they are fighting against something rather than just embracing how peaceful it can be. The defeatism, the discouragement, the anger, yelling about the game, yelling about Rare this and Rare that, blaming the crew, blaming self, blaming others. It's all made up and it's all self caused and unnecessary.

You will get better at something as you do it more, you will have a ceiling and there is nothing is wrong with that, you will lose regularly and that's alright.

Make peace with it, make peace with your participation in the game, don't blame others or yourself, don't feed anger or discouragement, don't set expectations for something that doesn't pay your bills. It'll never be that serious.

You want to perform better and that's understandable but you gotta keep in mind that some of the best performers are the least happy in the gameplay.

Maintain the journey and you will do so well that it doesn't really matter who wins or loses. You'll reach the goals simply by staying out of your own way.

(I'm just talking sloop because that's the most popular ship for HG and where the majority of my experience lies)

    • Turn sound effects all the way up, and maybe turn the music down a bit. That will help you listen to the different sounds of your ship sinking, when different parts are damaged, when your hitting your shots, and most importantly, when someone is trying to board your boat.
    • If you're on PC, make sure your frame rate is as high as your monitor can take. It vastly improves your close quarters combat and general awareness. I personally don't just go to cursed graphics settings, because I actually want to enjoy looking at the game.
    • Brainstorm/find some strategies to deal with boarders like blunderbuss, blunderbombs, or killing the player before they make it up with the flintlock or knife. A boarder at the wrong time can and will end your match.
    • The best sail configuration for the sloop is to angle it to either side and raise it a bit. The angle makes your turning circles tighter and raising gives you a slower speed to help you stay on your target.
    • Always shoot for the enemy cannon until you cripple the ship. The area around the cannon gives you many different targets to destroy at the same time: The mast, the player shooting at you from the cannon, and the hull. If you get really good at hitting the enemy cannon, you will do fine.
    • Know what kinds of important communication to have with your crewmate, if you are a duo. The player on the cannon should update the helm on how good the turning angle is, and the player on the helm should inform the cannoneer when their aim is off and how to fix it (the helm has a better view of the other ship).
    • Realize, the best combo for hourglass right now is blunderbuss/eye of reach. If you don't like that combo, don't use it. The last thing you want is to force yourself into doing something you dislike, which will hurt your motivation. You'll just have to get good at countering the meta.
    • Don't just eat pineapples whenever you get hit. Only carry 3 or 4 pineapples and the rest meat or mangoes so you can heal chip damage without spending more valuable resources.

Remember that all this is is pixels on the screen. Just because you lost doesn't mean somthing significant in your irl life will change. This helped me care less about losing (especially multiple times in a row). It's a video game don't let it control how you feel.

  • @wolfmanbush I always stop to watch the sun set. It's a beautiful world to spend some virtual time in.
We all probably need to remember the real world is pretty stunning as well.

    1. Recognising that the grind for the curses is a marathon and not a sprint. It's going to take a long while.
    2. the matchmaking system is horrible so be mindful of that.
    3. focus on shooting cannonballs before chainshots. That way the crew will be kept busy with holes and will need to decide what to prioritise..
4)If possible do it with a friend so it will feel chill.
5)if you don't win. Try to identify what caused you to lose. Was it prioritising repairs over cannons? Did you not repair the mast? Etc

I did 6 matchs last night and lost 2 from cheaters

  • I've seen cheaters mentioned a lot but i gotta say i haven't seen a single one, and i've been grinding HG the whole weekend on PC. Went from 15 to 100 on Reapers, and 45 to 65 on Athena. 75% solo sloop, 25% brig. It was overall an enjoyable grind, aside from the occasional runners, the constant submarine starts (not so much on sloop but every time on brig) and crud launchers everywhere (also brig).

There are some nasty exploits thats allow plays shoot themself from ladders with greate unintended distance simillar with cannons and fishing rods.

As bad is it that means you should allways have some blunderbombs and / or that blunderbuss in pockets.

Another thibg is that you will need to learn when to bord enemy shop to secure sink.

Never hipfire blunderbuss, wait for oponent shoot and then rush him, ads and shot that gives you best chance to one hit him.

Get as second weapon sniper rifle. No one will tell but it is easies way to get kills, no need for eny quickswaps, onetaps just land hit with sniper and follow it blunderbuss/blunderbomb. Its simple dmg math.

Same goes for throwing dagger they have huge hitboxes and they hit like hell giving overall highest dps from weapons.

But as other said find weapon combination that suits you best.

I personally find sword and daggers as effective and fun setup for combat in confined spaces of lower decks. Not best one for sure but fun with daggers and lounges all over deck.

Sword parry will block incoming throwing dagger.

You can bypass oponet block by side slashing - trying to hit their side, moving pr jumping little bit to side and slashing them.

Figure out when its time to repair, sloop is tanky and sinks slow a lott of fight can be done with just bucket and few planks.

Dedicate enitre playsession only for some goles like
    "Hiting enemy cannons"
"Borading and sailing him out of bonds"
    "Sninping enemy on short distance"
    Etc.

Make it own daily deeds and treat doing them as own victory - you get that loss xp and own skill upgrade.
As wirh xp have allways emisary flag up.

And most important brace yourself for rage, and burnout - SoT has terrible hitreg problems, net code is joke and its full of exploits that tryhards that will use eny little bit of cringe exploit agaist you - it will boil you down to meltdown (i know i was there, you will find my angry post about kegs spawning in HG)

But all of that is menagable I sollo run myslef to ghost curse back in S8.
