Diving to Hourglass with Treasure

  • My understanding is that the reason we can't dive with treasure is because part of the challenge of the game is defending your loot from other pirates and getting it safely back to port to sell it. If this is the case, why can't we dive to hourglass fights with treasure on board?

I would like to take my loot with me into the hourglass fight, try to defend it, and give someone a chance to win it off me. I think increasing the possibility that you may be winning some loot, and not just gold and XP, when you win an hourglass fight could raise the stakes and make them more interesting, and may encourage more people to take part.

I don't want to make any suggestions that would make the game easier, but I can't think of a way this could be used to make it easier to get your loot back to port, since you're guaranteeing that you're going to have to fight for it (with no option to run away) rather than this just being a possibility. Maybe there's something I haven't thought of?

This would open up a way to escape from a fight on the server you're on with your treasure.

People might prefer a 1v1 against the same ship/crew size instead of being chased by a larger crew or even multiple crews. If you're sure you're going to lose against the current crew, you might take the "50/50 chance" in Hourglass.

There is also a chance that you won't get into a fight and spawn at an outpost out of danger or people might, while under the waves, to cancel the fight, perhaps ending up on the same server but on an unknown location to the people who were chasing.

  • Haven't done it for a bit, but can't you still Defend in Hourglass rather than Dive to a fight? Where you just sail around collecting loot like normal until a Ship is queued and invades you? At which point you will have treasure to defend as well in that fight. That sounds like what you're looking for, and should already be a feature.

  • Treasure belongs with the server you were initially on... and anyone you stole it from should have the opportunity to steal it back.

If you are able to dive away with it, it removes that aspect of the game.... yes you would be still defending it from another ship, but it destroys the opportunity for counter steals.

  • Agree with there being an escape issue with loot. If HG can do it, why can't I dive with my loot as pve to fast travel. (You see the crate of worms?)

Defending still exists for HG...you have your loot to defend...and you can keep getting more while you wait!

If you wish to “defend” your loot in hourglass. Don’t dive and just activate it and collect treasures.

  • These are all good points that I honestly hadn't thought of, especially the point about treasure staying on the server where it spawned. I guess that's one of the fascinating things about game design, is when you introduce a new mechanic, someone will always find a way to use it to their advantage that you weren't expecting.

I guess I just like to think that someone who beats me in hourglass is going to appreciate the fight and feel like it was worth their time. Hopefully they'll be equally excited to find a good stash of meat and pineapples (and usually enough chainshots and cannon balls to keep them going for a couple more rounds).

In summary, you're all right and it was a bad idea. I'm not going to lock or delete the thread because I still believe discussing bad ideas, and understanding exactly why they wouldn't work, is a valuable exercise. Thanks everyone.

  • @eligibleeel6171 Thank you for the extremely polite discourse and discussion!

  • That's hilarious. This entire time I thought you could dive with treasure in hourglass. I just barely did it and never paid enough attention to notice the treasure disappearing. I don't even think I got a popup for possibly losing treasure on board when queuing for hourglass, but I could be wrong. Had no idea it was for defending from invades.
