UPGRADES and MODS for SHIPS

  • In my opinion there should be some fine tuning and upgrades on every ship.
(For example: one could upgrade the cannons, making them faster to reload, but increasing the weight of the ship so making it slower, or vice versa)
I'm sure it's possible to implement a balanced and fun system of ship upgrades, it just needs to be thought well.
Right now ships are becoming so boring, you just take a look at how many sails a ship has and you already know every statistic of it..

  • @mmrive the Idea of the game mechanics is to put everything on equal footing

  • The game is built so everyone is on equal footing, not counting supplies found when playing.

No one would be happy if they got sunk after logging in because the other player had 'mods' or 'power ups' that made cannons faster, or more damaging, or their ship could move faster or turn tighter.

SoT works because it does not have those kinds of 'upgrades'; All weapons are the same for every player, regardless of just logging in, or having been playing for a 3+ hour session.

  • Right now ships are becoming so boring, you just take a look at how many sails a ship has and you already know every statistic of it..

and yet, nobody seems to know how to sail or use them. They always leave there ship undefended or it sinks and they cry "why" or How.

  • I think non combat related customization/upgrades would be awesome as a captaincy feature

The garden ship where people can grow a bunch of plants/veggies/flowers. Plants will go through life cycles based on time played.

The hunting ship where there are dry racks for meats and spots to sit and fish.

The stargazer ship, The Rogue ship for music, The clown ship set up with silly stuff.

  • Problem with Upgrades

    1. Newbies will be unequal on the seas.
    2. In the end, everyone should have all the meta upgrades, which in fact will become the normal ship stats.
  • I see that no one understood me.
A mod would not make a ship stronger in every way, but stronger in one stat and weaker in another.
It's all about balancing and testing the mods.
Mods on a ship were common things for pirates.
And if you really care about making equal possibilities for every player, even new ones: remember that the skill gap between a new player and someone with 2000+ hours is so horribly huge that PvP for the new player is a nightmare.
Are you still convinced of the mods being a bad idea? Okay, let's just create new ship models (NO DIFFERENT STATS FROM THE EXISTING ONES, ONLY AESTHETICALLY DIFFERENT).
I don't even know where to spend gold anymore, let me buy a new type of sloop or brig or galleon..

  • @mmrive so you want to spend all your ingame cash on upgrades for ships? Pay to win? Ships should remain the same. Not everyone who plays has millions of gold to upgrade to more competitive ships. Sorry friend. I'm all for different styles based on original ships or cosmetic upgrades though.

  • @mmrive

We understood you just fine; the idea wasn't a complicated one to grasp.

It's just one that most of us here on the forums have seen suggested in so many ways so often we've grown kinda prosaic in explaining over and over again why it's inherently not gonna work.

As mentioned previously, the core gameplay upon which the game is built is that everybody starts out equal with no in-game mechanics that give you an unfair advantage over other crews, regardless of weakening one stat while raising another. It's why you can't (and shouldn't ever) carry over supplies from session to session for instance. Same ships, same base supplies, same weapons, same tools.

You tried to use the skill gap as an argument, but it's not valid since the only thing that is supposed to differ from player to player IS experience and the time you've put into increasing your personal skills; something you've earned only through hours of playtime and not something you just threw tons of gold at.

Don't hate the idea for different ship aesthetics, though. The standard hull/sails/figurehead dynamics could use a bit of a shake-up and I wouldn't mind seeing that.

  • @mmrive There would still be a meta and it'd end up being the same situation that we're in now. Just like Blizzard removing talent trees in WoW because everyone picked the same ones so it was pointless.

  • @qu1etone explain to me how its pay to win if you cant buy in game gold? this is fair since everyone can get gold, also are buying supplies "pay to win" i mean they cost gold and give advantages over players with less supplies?

  • @atlas6632 that was tongue in cheek my friend as the op said they need something to spend all their gold on.
Point is this game has a level playing field when it comes to ships guns and cannon. The only differentiating factor is skill. Some pirates have lots of gold and could buy all upgrades immediately. A new player dose not have that luxury, so the skill gap is now stretched even further. Not what Rare intended. That's all I meant. Pay to win wasn't my point of contention. Level playing field.
Your supplies analogy doesn't work for me as you can only buy a set amount on start up. And you are not spending millions. Sail happy. 👍
