Allow Multiple Crews in Safer Seas

  • Problem:

There are no official / easy way to play with more than 4 friends on the same server.

I know that there has been a lot of back and fourth in these forums about people requesting additional content/features for Safer Seas. This suggestion is purely meant for a way to play with more than 4 friends on the same server without making the game unfair for everyone else. If there is a way to introduce this in High Seas instead, I would be all for it!

I often have group of 5 or more that want to play Sea of Thieves together which is very difficult to do. We often opt to not play Sea of Thieves since getting two crews on the same server is difficult and playing on different servers is not ideal.

I know that limiting crews to 4 was by design, since having a crew more than 4 would make it unfair to the other players in the server. Which makes sense. Hence my following suggestion:

    Solution

I believe safer seas is a perfect place to be able to play with more than 4 friends. Keep the existing Safer Seas reward and event restrictions (ex: 30% reward rate) to still give a purpose to play on High Seas.

Option A - Allow 2 crews on the same Safer Seas server.

    • Although a nice to have. The Devs could disable the alliance bonus between ships in Safer Seas (I believe its 10% gold reward) to give player another reason to play on High Seas.
    • Players would only receive rewards from their own 4 player crew when selling loot.

Option B - Allow up to 6 players on a Galleon in Safer Seas.

  • Another post asking to turn Safer Seas into PvE servers…

  • @buddee I can’t go into unofficial ways to do it via High Seas, but if you ask around online, I’m sure someone will be able to give you an answer eventually…

  • @tesiccl Yeah, I've seen a couple. I thought maybe suggesting upping the limit of the Galleon in Safer Seas to 6 would be a possible compromise.

On another note, has anyone suggested maybe having a High Seas game mode variant where you can spawn with two crews (2 to 8 players), like you can pick one brig and one gallion, or two sloops (whatever combination). Essentially the server would host up to 3 different groups (6 ships), maybe even 4 groups (might be chaotic). Might be unbalanced but would be a fun idea.

  • good idea, but there should be no alliances, cause that could get exploited

  • @buddee Let's start off with a design part of Safer Seas. It wouldn't get any features that aren't in Higher Seas. so that's a no.

In higher seas it would be completely unbalanced to have 2 crews who's alliance isn't shakey because they are friends.

As pointed out there are way to make it happen.

Also just play on 2 different boats and jump in a call together. I'm regularly on a vc with 2-10 people and often times there are 3-4 boats running.

  • @boeing7876500 I agree.

  • @buddee I'd be down, but cap it at 8 for sure.

  • Your wanting SS to become a Pve server with just your friends and no enemies.

    That is a no

  • To avoid SS from becoming a PvE server (which already technically is), I think Option A is now out of the question.

Option B could be feasible since you are still restricted to one ship. As the Galleon max player size would be 6 (maybe 8). However, a good counter point that @captain-coel mentioned is that Option B would give a feature to SS that HS does not have. So there's that I guess.

I can't update my original post, so I'll do it here:

A 6 man galleon would be way over powered. its insanely powerful as a 4 person ship.

  • I probably will never understand this topic and didn't get it before the release of Safer Seas. What exactly is so wrong about offering a purely PvE experience for interested Sea of Thieves players? Are PvP players worried that their victims will migrate, and they will have to face like-minded opponents more often?

Of course, I understand that the average pirate preferred to attack defenseless victims rather than equal opponents, and that the loss of PvE-interested players might mean they can no longer follow this historical tradition.

Why not make the game fundamentally PvE-based and then create incentives for voluntary PvP confrontations? Special treasures, skins, or other rewards that can only be earned if you flag yourself for PvP.

In my opinion, Safer Seas was simply the wrong approach to solve a conflict that has existed since release, to satisfy both parties and to bring more PvE players into the game. More PvE players also means that players interested in PvP will find victims more often, and even if they have to flag PvP to be attacked, this will happen more and more often as progress increases.

What is wrong with offering a purely PvE experience is that it is not, fundamentally, the game that the developers, wanted, intended or designed the game to be. The CORE experience of this game is the risk of other players attacking you and stealing your loot. What everyone that is requesting this doesn't seem to understand is that the risk of other player interaction is one of the foundational core concepts the game is built on.

What it ends up boiling down to is the question you are asking is exactly the same thing as going to a restaurant that exclusively sells chicken prepared in a myriad of ways and confronting the owner about not offering a vegetarian option to interested people who want to eat there but don't eat meat.

It is not the fault of the restaurant that the prospective customer ignored the core vision of the restaurant that the owner wanted, intended and designed; nor is is the owner's responsibility to change their vision to indulge someone's demands of what they think it should be.

  • if i wanted to chill play with more than 4 friends on a server id just VPN to an area with empty servers and make a boat there. let a crewmate join, and do the same til both ships are on the same server.
