Advocating for Higher Field of View in Sea of Thieves

  • Sea of Thieves is all about living the pirate life, and it's brought countless players along for the ride with its awesome gameplay and stunning graphics. But hey, there's always room for improvement, right? Let's talk about why Sea of Thieves should let you see more of the action with a wider field of view (FoV) option.

    Better Gameplay:
Sea of Thieves is full of adventure, from exploring to battles on the high seas. With a wider FoV, you'd have a more comfortable view of everything around you. Spotting enemies, dodging obstacles, and finding treasure would be a whole lot smoother. Plus, it would make the game feel even more real like you're actually out there exploring the vast ocean.

    Getting Immersed:
Part of what makes Sea of Thieves so cool is feeling like you're really in the pirate world. A wider FoV would make that feeling even stronger. It's like putting on new glasses and seeing the world in a newer, clearer way. And for people who suffer from motion sickness (me included) it would be extremely helpful, making the game more comfortable to play for longer periods of time.

    Making it Yours:
Everybody's different, right? So why not let players customize their experience even more, with something that makes the game more suitable for them? A wider FoV option would make Sea of Thieves more accessible and enjoyable for a lot of people. Whether you want to feel like a true pirate or just prefer a wider view, it's all about giving players more ways to play the game they love.

Though this will most likely get the automated message "The ability to modify FoV beyond the in-game limits was never intentional and has been removed in order to restore the intended settings of Sea of Thieves. The game is designed for 90 FoV Maximum, anything beyond that looks distorted and broken. There are no intentions to change this in the future. Dropping Anchor on this thread." in response I thought I'd still put this out there for the possibility of someone taking this into consideration. I have seen videos of people using third-party applications to access a wider FoV on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch and have not seen the "distorted and broken" look that was previously mentioned. Yes, some parts may look a little stretched but if you take a look at most other games that use a higher FoV you will notice that it also tends to stretch the screen and it is a completely normal side effect of increasing your Field of View.

    Wrap-Up:
I believe, and I know many others would agree, that Sea of Thieves could be even better with a wider FoV option. It would make gameplay smoother, immersion deeper, and the whole experience more personal. So let's set sail for a bigger, better pirate adventure!

  • definitely. while i myself am happy with 90fov, as that is usually what i play all my games with, i think its needed. they arleady have so many accesbility options like colorblindness, brightness, contrast, etc. a higher fov, maybe 120, would be much appreciated by the community.

people often argue that a higher fov gives you an advantage which i find quite absurd as an argument, because messing with brightness and contrast can also give you advantages. also, when the option is in the game, its not really an advantage since everybody has access to it.

  • The auto reply is silly, no one usually mentions the unintentional FoV increase from a few years ago. Also at least 95% of modern first person games have a higher than 90 FoV option without anything distorted or broken.

Still no genuine argument why the FoV on this game maxes out much lower than pretty much every other game.

Because anything above 90 looks broken and horribly manipulated.

  • @tesiccl "Also at least 95% of modern first person games have a higher than 90 FoV option without anything distorted or broken." Did you skip reading over that bit?

  • @rambobrad I did, but SoT wasn’t built for +90 FoV and when you break ToS by manipulating further, it looks distorted and broken. The devs chose 90 FoV as the max, it won’t change.

  • @tesiccl SOT is built in unreal engine which very much supports more than 60-90 fov and the animations can be very easily fixed with a simple shader.

Actually Sea of Thieves was built in Unity and then ported to Unreal 4. Honestly I think alot of our issues in the game as a whole are due to this.

Also while Unreal supports higher FoV, SoT was designed for 60-90.

  • @captain-coel from what I've seen from people using over 90 the game doesn't seem to have any form of culling? It may look janky going into tight spaces but I'm not aware of any other real issues preventing 100-120 fov

  • Do the people who are against higher FoV never sprint in this game? It raises your FoV doesn't it?

  • @xzodeak from what I remember when seeing clips and screen shot there is definitely odd stretching along the outside. Also a bigger factor is, taking the sloop for example, that by getting more fov, even distorted, allowed the helmsman to see the ladders from the helm.

Giving people even more visible space changes the game from a balance perspective and just a fov perspective. I have to imagine that if they had designed for 120fov the sloop ladders would be further back.

  • @tigurr15 Rare said, it's made for 90 and it will stay that way...it's theyr game, so they decide...deal with it
