i think it would be kinda cool if we had the opyion to enter an hourglass ranked mode, purely for players who enjoy playing more competitively. There could be basic ranks like copper, bronze, you know the basic ones. Or a pirate related one, like shipmate etc. Just think it would be cool to get ranked base cosmetics seasonaly, something yo be proud of and show your skill.
An Hourglass Ranked System?
Something that would be cool is something I'll call a golden ticket
a golden ticket can be earned by becoming champion
then golden tickets can fight each other
this is going to create a higher chance of a competitive fight
to support competitive players in tournaments and to add a feature to hg they can allow golden tickets to fight other golden tickets of their choice. (any golden ticket around the world)
This creates a whole new system for hg regulars that is based on effort, earning, and result.
It also wouldn't require mass participation to work effectively
It also would open up some stamps once in a while so people that aren't as competitive might end up with different players sometimes. Increasing their chances and qol.
@burnbacon I know its not competetive, but SoT did partner with NAL did they not? just seems like it would be a cool replacement, if you will.
it's a good idea and it could make a lot of people want to participate in this mode to improve their ranking like a good carrot
Always there to destroy posts when it comes to talking about PVP. it's sad
You play SOT as you like, if you want it to be competitive it's your choice, don't impose what you think on others. with or without a rank system it doesn't change anything for you and your gameplay since I think you don't play it or little.
PVP on demand is in itself competitive in order to continue your streak.
And a little advice, and it would be good to know the subject to be able to talk about it better.Solid idea, I really like it but I'm not sure that there's enough HG population to sustain ranked matchmaking.
BurnBacon doesn't play hourglass and is just here to bait from what I've seen, best ignore him.
Believe it or not, hourglass matchmaking is using a skill based matchmaking system. When the game can't find a crew of your skill level, it expands the search to find any crew (either higher or lower in skill). Both players that are on the high and low end of the skill curve may have difficulty finding a solid match. Sadly if you're on the low end of the skill curve you're just more likely to be matched against someone who is of a higher skill than you.
Rare has decided to not show you this rank.

The reason I suggested the design I suggested is because the only way to create a viable strategy for high skill HG without harming HG's adventure design, is to embrace current design while implementing creative ways to support player run tournaments/events.
Communities in SoT have successfully put on events/competitions for years, that's largely what is compatible and realistic for SoT pvp at the competitive level.
Implement ways for people to put on competitions/tournaments while engaging in HG design and features and avoiding any sort of content cheesing and that will be a success.
What's missing from HG is a way to coordinate to compete. My suggestion avoids cheesing and still requires typical HG participation so it won't harm the content.
When players can rely on some sort of consistent opportunity they can plan, coordinate, follow through.
This wouldn't be the esport type of thing that Rare wants to avoid, it just supports community and community events.
