New Coming Combat Changes - PvP Meta Analysis Questions and Suggestions.

  • Ahoy Fellow Sot'rs.

With the recent release of the proposed additions to the weapons and items available I'd like to discuss the reality of some of these changes.

First of all, I think the addition of the throwing knives, double barrel flintlock, the skeleton caller and the wind caller are all good ideas and should shake up the meta from Blunderbuss and Sniper.

Personally I am torn about the Harpoon gun, as the main boarder commonly for the crews I play with, this sounds great and just makes my life easier. However this also minimizes the Naval combat heavily since I can seemingly guarantee that I get on board and cause chaos and or eventually get the anchor. Why even develop your naval skill?

But what I really wanted to point out is the Reality of what is coming with the Harpoon gun addition. - Currently while playing sloop, we line the walls with multiple storage crates and or empty fruit crates. This is to avoid getting harpooned off the boat from an opposing crew. If you pay attention Many boats are doing this, especially on Sloop.

The Reality of the Harpoon gun will eventually lead to Many crews intentionally scattering trash crates covering as much of the boat as possible in order to thwart people from harpooning onto their boat. I personally think that this kind of "counter play" is lame and 100% would eventually be the norm. I think there ought to be a more thought out way that something like this can be implemented. The idea of the boat's harpoon being able to balance on is one of those types of good ideas in my opinion.

What do you think about the harpoon gun and how do you think it can be implemented to incentivize better counter play other than just scattering trash around your boat? Or should it be a thing at all?

-Another Concern I have is that will the new weapons really switch people off of playing Blunderbuss and Sniper? It would be hard to give up on the only one shot weapon and the best boat to boat sniper just to pick up the new weapons. The new weapons have to offer something just as strong or stronger for people to use. The only thing I see doing that with the current damage numbers is the harpoon gun.

On a different note, with the addition of things like the wind caller and skeleton bombs why not add a rare item you find in barrels that is a one time use to call a mermaid? We have all been there where we need a mermaid and cannot get one.

Lastly, although I believe hourglass shouldn't be in Adventure mode as it ruins the sandbox experience can I just suggest that The little wooden boats on the Emissary tables show the front glow of the boat just like it does when you see a boat opted into hourglass. This would just allow hunters or pve players to know that their server is HG heavy or not. Currently we have to run all the way down to the Athena's fortune to see if anyone is opted in. This is unnecessary since they could just add a visual indicator. This would put more risk back into running a reaper flag as well as the Athena flag as they should have more risk. HG has reduced that risk to those emissary flags

Thanks for your time and I hope to see you on the open waters one day!

Small wish: I really wish they would remove the many exploits that have been used since day one like the ability to launch off of every boat much farther than a cannon, and since there is still a quick swap between weapons its just not as fast as it was yet its still quicker than intended. I know these things may be hard to fix but thats why its a wish.

  • Hg will do whatever hg does with metas and random adventure will just be a bunch of random stuff.

Random adventure will still just be brig speed metas and running/chasing.

Personally I think people are viewing this through an environment of the past more than what the environment currently is.

Encounters are just here and there, the brig will just use the speed to do what they have been doing for quite some time now, a lot of avoiding conflict, running/chasing, and random pvp encounters are so chaotic or non-competitive that it'll be more of the same just with more toys to play with.

Random organic adventure isn't really complex, some crews will do cool stuff with new tools but it's gonna be a lot of the same. The servers still have a lot of new players, a lot of players will still avoid each other, pvp is still going to just be a roll of the dice.

Fun stuff to play with but it's not gonna be some overwhelming thing imo. Not in 2024 SoT.

and HG addressed a terrible and extreme meta in this game of hopping for reapers and athenas, the BEST thing about HG is that they used it to break that meta up. Far better for the environment.

  • I personally think that this kind of "counter play" is lame and 100% would eventually be the norm.

What more Lame is players abandoning there ships just to board, toss blunderbombs and firebombs from the water to get a free kill. Yet its the Norm.

What do you think about the harpoon gun

Could be scrapped. Its Still many months away.

The new weapons have to offer something just as strong or stronger for people to use.

New Stuff, try them out and exploit them. That is what gonna happen.

We have all been there where we need a mermaid and cannot get one.

No. No I havnt' Mermaids come to us when we are "Lost at sea" Not appearing when we summon them. That rude.

I believe hourglass shouldn't be in Adventure mode as it ruins the sandbox experience

Do Tell. Im curios more on this thinking. Frankly, it doesnt ruin anything since Hourglass is a Tool..to find PvP partners. Which is part of Adventure.

  • Everyone is worried about the harpoon gun..
What IF.. its only usable while u have ur feet on the ground?
Not likely.. but it would solve everybodys main issue w it.

You made me laugh from what you said about the new weapons. I certainly agree that there will be some broken things that will come out of them.

Nonetheless, to expand on what I said about HG what I have noticed in adventure mode is that when you see a reaper on the map you dont have the same caution you would have needed before, since the reaper will likely just disappear. On the flip side if you go hunt for a reaper on the map its very likely it will just dive. The same goes with Athena if you see an Athena Flag flying on a boat or on the emissary table. Its much harder to target reaper and athena emissary flags because of this. You never know if they are just gunna dive or not. This has made Athena and Reaper non HG much less risky. I have noticed a vast difference in non HG Reaper especially because less people come after you assuming you will just dive. Lastly, Crew's opted into HG are simply not playing adventure mode. Most of the time when you run into them they are in a battle or leaving the server. As it stands with all the issues in that mode why not just make it its own thing?

Why not wait until the changes hit and players actually get used to them before suggesting changes? These are supposed to impact the meta...that's their point.

  • In regards to the Harpoon gun, everyone seems to be forgetting two important things:

    1. It has limited ammunition. Now I’m sure there is a way to refill it, but nothing said it would be restocked the same way other guns were or they restocking would be as quick.

    2. It would take up a weapon slot, so even if you did get boarded, your opponent would be limited to one weapon while you fight. You can work around that.

I see your point, nonetheless, I wanted to point out that trash crate stacking around your boat will likely be the result.

I totally agree. I just wanted to have a speculative discussion about the things people will start doing when these new features drop.

  • @cyberguardian77 but to board you technically only need one shot if done right, similar to launching yourself from cannon, you get one try and if you fail it's back to the boat and try again.

Even if it uses ammo which we don't know how it will be refilled i doubt it will be something you don't have readily available on your boat either by purchasing at outpost or having it refill from the current ammo crate as it makes no sense to say it's refilled by ammo you find randomly.
