RPG mode

  • There are many many people craving a pirate rpg and sea of thieves is the PERFECT platform for this. Many of us would love a way to play sea of thieves with long term character advancement and progression. Owning ships, have to buy new ones on death. Leveling up crafting and weapon skills. All of that. I am sure people MAY complain, that is always a given, but there is a massive market for this kind of thing and I think as your first true paid expansion or something, this could be absolutely amazing. You could allow groups to own forts, etc. You could create all kinds of more sandbox rpg mechanics that people would definitely love. Maybe you could even allow the hiring of ai in this mode so that each player can solo operate a ship(just an idea, not necessary), but whatever you did with this rpg mode, I am 100% certain the interest is there. People really wanted skull and bones to be amazing and you could absolutely fill that void. I think the team should strongly consider the void in the market around pirate rpg's and strongly consider filling it. One of the big downsides to sea of thieves for many people and eventually even wears me down, is that the long term progression is basically ALL cosmetic and leaderboard based and unfortunately that does not provide many of us with a long term rewarding feeling.

Do not get me wrong, I love the original vision for sea of thieves as well, of course I do, but this could be so cool.

  • @mastercheef3951 What your describing is a different game and no longer Sea of Thieves.

  • @captain-coel I guess you could say that, but I am still 100% all for it. I would play both version regularly. I personally WOULDN'T say that though, I would call it a different game mode, because the entire sea of thieves vibe remains intact.

  • @mastercheef3951 how does the vibe remain intact when you are asking fundamental changes?

It is a session based game with the only thing carrying over being cosmetics. This is the core of the game. What are you suggest removes that completely.

  • @mastercheef3951

Ask Larian for Pirates of the Sword Coast DLC for Baldur's Gate 3

  • @pithyrumble But I want sea of thieves gameplay with rpg features, so I think asking rare makes more sense. I also KNOW im not alone in this, one of these posts gets made at least once a month.

  • @mastercheef3951

Get Larian and Rare to kiss. Maybe. Or go play S&B?

I absolutely do not want the silly pirate game I play to become an ARPG.

  • Maybe as a mobile game

Getting posted once a month doesn't matter. It's still asking for a different game.

    I mean...I'd play that.
I'd play any x-pack for Baldur's Gate 3, though. Double, if it has playable kobolds.

Rare won't change SoT to shoehorn in an RPG system.
That's not Sea of Theieves, because SoT is a pirate sandbox game, where you start on an level playing field & can do whatever you want (Within the coding of the game).

Not crafting and mining and harvesting and buying new ships and brewing potions and weapon skill levels.
None of that is Sea of Thieves.

  • @guildar9194 Of course not, but it could be. ;] The fact is I simply disagree doing this would somehow detract from the base game. Truth is, I would even be ecstatic for just crafting being added to the game, something I have posted about in the past as well. Things like beach cannons, chairs, rowboats, different little toys as well as food, etc. Would be fun.

  • @mastercheef3951
Persuasion Roll: 1 Critical Failure. Arrrr.

You and that other guy need sugar daddies and mommies to help you make your own ARPG pirate game with booze and blackjack.

Have you pitched this to Pocket Pair?

  • @pithyrumble Lol definitely roll 1 every time I write anything on these forums, but it doesn't change the reality there is a ton of us who want this. I run in to people and discuss it all the time and a lot of people think it sounds awesome. From what I have found the forums are so against any change that you can write just about anything, like add a new gun or something, and people WILL crawl out up in arms. People don't usually come here to be positive, its mostly a place to complain. Something I tend to avoid doing. When I am in game though, I frequently find entirely different points of view from the average players who just don't feel the need to come on these forums and make fun of others etc.

I guarantee if this game didn't have the tall tales and someone came here and suggested them, they would be fully thrashed by these forums, but now that they are here, most people think they are pretty rad. In general I have found that most games suffer from the "no changes" ideology and it makes online games stagnate 100%.

  • @MasterCheef3951

Suggestions that fundamentally change the core of gameplay and design philosophy will be ripped to shreds on most forums.

You want to change SoT into something entirely different from what we've been enjoying for years. What's your sample size of the "tons of other players who want this"

People who'll stop and listen in game? Wow. That's like 5 people. Over the course of a month?

Maybe. Just maybe (no one cares corporate), you've gotten all you can from SoT and it's time to move on.

I'm tired of playing Forza. Add a gun.

I'm tired of Halo. Gimme crafting!

I'm tired of Baldur's Gate, remove skill checks.

Go to these games' forums. Make these suggestions. I'll wait...

  • Sot is definitely not the perfect platform for this. Sot is not about any kind of upgrade based progression or major crafting systems, and with how easy it is to lose your ship, having to buy a new one every time you sink would just become tedious. No game is designed to fit every single players desire around the world, and thats why many different kinds of games exist. Difference in variety is a good thing for games, any game that has tried too hard to please everyone tends to fall very short of pleasing most anyone.

A whole new mode that works on different system would not work out too well for this game since the effort to maintain arena with the numbers it brought in was what lead to it being shut down. Meanwhile safer seas can only exist since as the main game updates, it does not take effort to make sure safer seas works with the changes since it is the same mode, just solo and they can shut off anything they dont want.

  • @mastercheef3951

it doesn't change the reality there is a ton of us who want this

Cite your sources. I bet these 'tons' are...You and maybe a few others.

I run in to people and discuss it all the time and a lot of people think it sounds awesome.

Again; Cite them. Anyone can say '90% of the player base wants RPG mechanics!' to bolster their own view.

From what I have found the forums are so against any change that you can write just about anything

The only changes I see get posted against are ones that:

    • Add a mechanic for the sake of complexity (Keeping pets happy with complicated feeding mechanics. Harvesting. brewing potions.)
    • Add a mechanic 'Because other games do it' (Mining. Crafting.)
    • Change the base game (Making it an RPG.)
    • Ignore the dev's design philosophy that nothing gives more power, & every pirate, upon logging in, starts at the same power (Making pets Pay 2 win with skills. Adding ship armor & new, more powerful guns. Other linear progression like skill trees/levels. Brewing literal fire-breathing potions.)
    • Or demand the devs cater to one side of the PvPvE player base over the other (Ideas to force runners to fight)

I guarantee if this game didn't have the tall tales and someone came here and suggested them, they would be fully thrashed by these forums

Not really, but I've noticed an uptick in people throwing out ideas and then getting upset when they're not universally loved.

  • @mastercheef3951

It's not that this is a bad idea for A game. It's just a bad idea for THIS game. I would absolutely buy and play the game you've described; it sounds like amazing fun.

It's just not what Sea of Thieves is. Not what it has ever been nor what it's supposed to be. The devs have made their vision of what this silly little pirate game is supposed to be quite clear, and you want to not only change something SO fundamental to its identity, but literally remake the game from the ground up to incorporate a progression system that is antithetical to the game at its core.

Not an easy, simple or inexpensive task even if the idea WAS as popular as you seem to think it is (which, by the way, it is not).
