Remind me again, What is the point of Captaincy?

  • When Captaincy was first introduced, we got additional customization options for the captain’s cabin, the ability to add trinkets and 50 different voyages tucked on our ships for fast access to a voyage. With season 11 now offering “On Demand Voyages” Captaincy lost something that made it special.

Yes we still have trinkets but most of them are below deck where we never see them. 75% of our time is spent above deck or on islands where trinkets aren’t available. We also don’t spend much time in the captain’s quarters unless we are voting on the quest table or hourglass.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions that would make captaincy relevant again?

  • @coffeelight5545 how is being able to buy supplies directly into your barrels, customising the ship further, selling at the sovereigns, and equip trinkets become irrelevant now voyages have become streamlined and you don’t have to spend any gold on them at all?

    Sounds about right.

    Did we?

Heck, all of them if you think about it. Tell me, has anyone really stopped Pvp to admire your trinkets? :P

    make captaincy relevant again?

idk about you, but it always makes me giggle when I walk around my own ship and see all the paintings & fish hanging. Its the little things.

But tell me, how did S11 change any of this?

  • @burnbacon

But tell me, how did S11 change any of this?

    It didn’t.

  • I do think that retconning one of the biggest features that made captaincy a big deal was a mild flaw and think they could have gone about voyages a little different for this season, especially only 4 seasons after captaincy was released. But i do think captaincy does still have its place as is with the new customizations.

What i do hope comes to captaincy is compass, lantern, and harpoon customization. Possibly also different rail styles, but that may be a bit ambitious. I think captaincy should double down on just making your ship into YOUR ship. Which to me is more detailed customization than you can get from a rental!

  • There is zero chance I play this game anymore without my boat and my style expressed through the logbook/stats.

Seems like a success to me (for people like me)

A feature that my entire immersion and motivation revolves around because it brought so much to some of our experiences.

It was a very rough time when implemented but as far as content/features goes Captaincy has become the immersion (for at least me and some others)

I'd like logbooks to work in the water and I am still a bit bitter about overview stats but Captaincy is awesome imo.

  • Maybe more quests could be made available to captained boats? So we could find mercenary quests again, for example.

  • You get access to sell to the Sovereigns too, if you enjoy doing that.

  • Maybe voyages that can exclusively be chosen from a captained ship? Though captained ships are so cheap this is hardly a restriction...

Wait, for real wolfman? I feel like I don't get to see my ship in full glory because paying to repair it just irks me so. Especially with the loot nerf S11 brought, repairing the ship is just not worth it.

Absolutely. I see it the way I see it because I am a solo and I only play organically. I'm not sharing boats or sailing with others so my attachment to my boat and my organically earned stats will likely be more important to me (and those like me) than to those that are crew'd up and hopping servers or just focused on creating content, having fights/stealing, etc.

I'm telling a story and expressing a style through the logbook, through a ship, through a design. As are others.

Completely understandable that some did not attach to Captaincy and/or never gave it a try because of when and how it was implemented. To me I couldn't sail without it, it's become too integral to the experience to ever consider it anything other than a success, imo.

Some are here to become legends and some of us just want some personal history to carry around.

  • I've wondered the opposite. What is the point of joining someone else's crew when I can captain my own ship? What if everyone thought that and no one had crews because they want to be the captain?

As far as new exclusive features for captaincy, you know how you can start some quest, flip through the quest book or map(s) that the voyage gave you, see if it's what you're looking for, and if it's not then cancel the voyage and try again (re-roll voyages)? Well, what if re-rolling voyages were only possible through ship captaincy, while other players were subject to a voyage cooldown similar to the diving cooldown (but 2-5 minutes instead of 10; does not affect completed voyages, only cancelled voyages)?

I play like this too, but my issue is that the customisation captaincy offers is so limited that while I do feel an attachment to my ship, it doesn't feel that important to me.

It doesn't feel like my ship, it feels like a ship that I can put some decoration in preset spots that I don't even get to choose. Everyone has the same trinket locations. Especially on the sloop it feels pathetic how few options you have. I want to be able to change the harpoons, the ship compass, the map table, the lanterns, the rigging, additional (cosmetic) sails like jib sails, let me put trinkets on the hull of the ship like an anchor or barnacles or seaweed, ship curses, like the glow of athena in between the ship planks like on the ferry, or have masts with missing pieces like the ferry, or have cool fog on the ship like the ferry, basically I want to make my ship as cool as the ferry of the damned but in its own unique way.

Right now my ship feel like a slight variation of everyone else, instead of its own cool thing.

Only so much is realistic in this game though.

Logbooks still rarely display the data for others. I'm thankful they even tried again and didn't just abandon it.

Features struggle, servers struggle, there are bug struggles regularly. To me it's too much to ask for more when it's a struggle to stay afloat as it is.

I can make what we have work for immersion and qol, it would be nice for more consistency in content/features. To me that is more realistic than wanting significantly more added. Which is more bugs and more struggles.

They got a lot of their data issues under control which was pretty huge for Captaincy. Losing Captaincy doesn't happen to me anymore, my data gets recorded consistently, to me that kind of consistency is very important so I'm glad that's been improved significantly.

  • @tesiccl Are you talking about the supplies one pays for but only gets half of what you bought? Yeah that's really something

You cant base your standards for a feature on a bug tbf. It is annoying, but since its a bug, its not supposed to be something you gauge a system on.
