A possible solution to The Skull of Siren Song Voyage being "dull"?

  • Seen people complaining about the skull being uncontested by other players because most people already have the commendations and the gold reward is too little. Simply increasing gold amount might not work because some players will be rich already. My solution is making an exclusive reward for selling the skull. I have two solutions, one I like more than the other. My first one is that it gives a unique currency that can be used to purchase unique supply crates that can't be bought with normal gold. These supply crates could have something as simple as a lot of pineapples or maybe something more powerful like a crate that has a few randomly generated cursed cannonballs or Wraith cannonballs? Second solution which I believe most of you won't agree with is the addition of emissary grade 6 which can only be obtained by selling the Skull of Siren Song while being a grade 5 emissary of any kind. This emissary grade would mark you on the map. The reason I think this new grade would be received negatively is because it would be abused in non-organic PVE server takeovers and would make the problem worse than before. I believe this could be solved however. My solution is that grade six does NOT increase gold earned for selling loot but instead it makes it so that sinking other ships will cause them to spawn a good amount of loot corresponding to your type of emissary (for example you are a grade 6 order of souls and you sink another ship that has no loot, when their ship despawns, a bunch of order of souls loot will float to the surface) (Can only be done once or twice on one ship to avoid server hop abuse with friends). However if you are sunk, the person who sunk you gets a reward as well, your emissary flag which can be sold for a hefty amount (Maybe like 50K?). I feel that something like this could make the skull of siren song much more sought after as well as adding another feature to the game that brings PVP to a server. I know this is not a perfect solution and would love feedback on this idea to improve or change it, but the siren song voyage should have a reward that is exclusive to it, not just gold.

Edit: I think making having emissary grade 5 before selling the skull a requirement for grade 6 is a bad idea as the voyage might appear when at a lower grade, so it should boost you up to grade 6 from any grade. Also, grade 6 being a PVP focused grade should have some benefits like being able to see all ships and the type of ship on a map and this is a stretch but maybe also have the ability to click on a ship to see their current supplies. This would make having a grade 6 on your server a massive threat.

  • exclusive reward for selling the skull

You get a mask once you complete all the commendations, how exclusive is that?

gives a unique currency that can be used to purchase unique supply crates that can't be bought with normal gold.

    Doubloons?

  • @burnbacon In my post I mentioned that most people have already finished their commendations, making them longer will just make them tedious. When I say exclusive, what I meant by that is something that can impact gameplay so that there is a drive to get it. For your second reply, no not doubloons, an entirely new currency that can be used to buy more powerful crates.

  • @mioxity "...most people..."

A computer game is like river, players flow through, come and go. New players are still working on it.

I definitely just run them in the background passively and if we end up near them we grab them.

I agree with what was said about most having the cosmetics already. I feel that adding more cosmetics only ends up with people grinding that day 1. SOT has a community that will complain that there is never anything to do in the game so Rare adds like 200 hours of new playable stuff and y’all will just grind it the first weekend and go back to OMG there is nothing to do!!!

Limit how quick they pop. I will literally have one pop up as soon as we finish. More $$$ may help a tiny bit but probably not enough. New cosmetics will be acquired by most in about 2 seconds and it dies again. We need REAL reason to get these, maybe a one time 2x multiplier to loot on top of your emissary if you have turned one in and haven’t sunk since…. Something that has lasting meaningful value

  • @foambreaker Very good point, however I am not looking at the health of the mode itself but more at the replayability of the mode for people who have finished the commendations and are playing it just for the amazing pvp experience it was when it came out.

  • @jon-sea-nah Making the voyage rarer is also a great idea. The whole point of this post was to put ideas out there that can be expanded on so that the potential of this voyage can be drawn out. If we find a way that makes it infinitely replayable and fun it will be amazing.

  • I think they only have to do 1 thing: make the voyage count towards the reputation and ledgers for Guilds and OOS (since it's a skull and Briggsy was close with the OOS lady from Plunder Outpost) and perhaps Reapers. Then people can use it to grind up their Guild and to progress their ledgers.

Putting more exclusive items in above what you already have won't work i think, because it turns away most casuals (wich every time you will need to reset to a higher number if that is your sole reason to keep people motivated(. It is basicly what you already have with the CoF's, where every season you need to collect 30 more to get the cosmetics and i have already heared a lot of casuals say that they are not interested in that, because they can't collect 30 per season, so they only see the 'finish line' getting further and further away, that is very demotivating for people. Most people like to see a finish line where they need to get to complete it and need to be able to see that they are getting closer.

  • One voyage a day per server or make it so you have to sail via a portal so muiltple crews would be paired against each other would fix this.

A new set of accomodations each season and/or a chest of cursed cannon balls would encourage people to keep buying in.

This second change could be applied to all world events to keep them worth doing.

Wait, so if I log into a server where someone's already done it; I can't?
Or do you mean I could only do it once, then would have to switch servers to do it again?

  • @miserenz One a day would be a bit too rare but making it rarer is a good idea. The portal idea sounds very difficult to implement. Like what if one crew makes it through the portal before the rest? Would they just get a headstart on getting the skull or be stuck in a waiting room until their server is full(which could take ages)? Also what about the loot on your boat? Would that come with you? If so this could just be used as a way of escape when being chased. If the treasure does not go with you, it would make it take even longer to find other crews to contest because they will either be busy going to sell their loot so they can go in the portal or they are busy doing FOTD or a world event and simply don't bother.

  • @super87ghost I am sorry but I am finding it a bit difficult to understand your reply. I understand that you want the voyage to count towards guilds and OOS. The rest of your comment is saying that there shouldn't be some collection goal if I am reading it right? I don't think my post said anything about there being a selling goal for siren song skulls and I didn't say that any commendations should be extended. Going off what you said about casual players being turned away, I am not so sure this would happen for one since there would still be the commendations as an incentive and for two, I don't think it would be bad for the more PVE focused player to be turned away anyway since this is meant to be a PVP voyage. Sorry if I misunderstood and what I said has nothing to do with this XD

  • @mioxity "...replayability of the mode for people who have finished the commendations..."

That is not a design goal of any game for good reason. You have to design around bringing in fresh players, you cannot keep a game going long term without fresh players. If you spend development time catering to old players, you will eventually have no players.

  • @super87ghost

You don’t need to complete the 30 CoF in a single season. I failed to get 30 in season 9 when it was in the FoF but got all 60 in season 10. The reason is because of the farmable FoTD.

Once the chest cycles through the remaining world events it will eventually return to the FOTD. By that time, all 5 tiers of the commendation will become available. I don’t think people realize that there is only going to be 5 tiers of commendations for a total of 150 Chest of Fortune. No one said you had to complete 30 chests in a season. I think the slow unlocking of the tiers per season is to stop completionists such as myself from finishing the commendation too early. The Chest of Fortune will be contested again when it moves to the next world event in a few weeks.

  • The easiest solution? Reputation gain for the emissary you choose to fly when handing it in. You’re taking the extra risk, you should be rewarded for doing so.

  • @foambreaker What you are basically saying is that OG players should be completely ignored. There is plenty of content for new players because they are new. Ignoring the old players of the game is a terrible idea, especially since most streamers and Youtubers(A lot have most commendations and tons of gold now) are old players. Not making replayable content for them makes them quit and a game losing content creators will hurt it badly.

  • How bout make the skull give doubloons and rep for whichever emissary you're flying? Athena, Reaper, Guild, etc. I think that'll make the skull more contested and more valuable both.

  • The simple solution is counting them towards Guild rep progression...which Mike Chapman confirmed was coming via Twitter.

Let's see how that changes the involvement with the SoSS. I know I'll start doing them proactively again instead of just reactively like today.
