Lesson 43: There are no nice Galleons

  • So - as a new captain on the high seas, I sometimes like to take screenshots of nice scenery, or my ship, or something that looks cool.....like the time my wife accidentally firebombed our ship and the mast was engulfed in flame before we knew what to do about it - you know....that sort of thing...

Well tonight I had sailed to a few Sea Forts (I am apparently missing one, but I'm not sure which I've not visited) and then I sailed to Port Merrick. I had no loot, and had been docked at the port for quite a while when this big galleon shows up.....

It had cool sails, and a fancy figurehead - quite dramatic looking. So I stand on the quarter deck and do a "wave" as they pass by....and I'm just about to take a picture of this lovely nice Galleon....when they start lobbing cannon balls at me. Remember that I am docked, at anchor, have no firing angle on them, sails up, flying the White Flag and waving at them like a manic cartoon character from the quarter deck - So I just jumped off the ship and logged off - which was my plan anyway to that point - I'm not sure if the default ship stores show up as loot, but if so, I hope they enjoyed the 5 bananas.

Lesson learned - There are no nice Galleons. (added to lesson 42 "there are no nice Sloops")

Perhaps the Brigs are the nice ones.....I think I'll try pet the next one I see.

  • @treozen1 spoiler Brigs are not nice either

  • @treozen1 spoiler, it's called sea of thieves not sea of nice ships. If you let ships come to make first contact they will end up being hostile. It is on you to go out and make contact to find friends.

OK, but Wouldn't that mean that every ship I go out to make contact with, should also be hostile, since from their perspective I'd be the one "coming to make first contact", which per your advice, should not be allowed?

I've met a few nice ships. This just wasn't one of them - and I'd say this Galleon was playing a game called "Camp the spawns and then use a vastly superior ship to attack one docked, anchored, flying a white flag and waving at you" - I don't think that's really a thief - more like a coward, or griefer really. It didn't bother me, I had nothing on board and had planned to log off anyway - but it was a bit of a waste.

Perhaps I'll do an experiment - See many many ships I can go out and meet without getting attacked - and noted - Brigs are not nice either. Perhaps the row-boats are the nice ones?

  • Finding compatible encounters is like hunting a shrouded ghost.

it can be discouraging if someone allows it to be, day in and day out, encounter after encounter of it not being in the cards that day

a lot of effort, a lot of time

but that all ends up being what makes the journey worth it

all the times it didn't work out, all the experiences that add perspective and appreciation to the search, and for the hunt

Today is just what happened today, it never rules over tonight or tomorrow.

One random moment changes everything for the better, it happens every day for someone, someday it'll happen to you during some random encounter.

  • @treozen1 naw, you approach from a safe distance with an alliance flag up and launch a white flare followed by a firework to announce your intentions. By being the one to initiate first contact you control how the scenario plays out.

Sure there may be time when they're still hostile but most of the time hostile ships won't be waiting for you to approach them.

I tried your approach, but didn't have an opportunity to implement, lol.

I loaded all four guns with a fire work, pointed them upwards, ran a white flag - but then I got attacked by a skeleton ship - I couldn't figure out how to get the firework out and the cannon ball in, so I swung around back to port, reloaded with cannon balls and prepared to fight....but the ship went away....so back to plan A - find people....well I found one docked at an island, so I approached nice and slow - cannons and what-not the same - but then...ROFL...I couldn't figure out how to get the cannon balls replaced back with fireworks - so I anchored just off their stern and played a goofy song on some instrument while standing on the bowsprit - I yelled "Ahoy"! which must be pirate for "immediately scuttle your ship".... because they took one look through their spyglass and then vanished off the beach.....then the ship sank. I felt sort of bad really...

I spotted another far off sail, but a shark attacked - so I decided I'd try again later. I had bought a few chests of gems as a reward for whomever I met....but - I just sold them back for a tiny profit.
