New Flag Ideas.

  • Ok, so this MIGHT become a very spicy thread, but I feel like it needs to be said.

We have a rainbow flag, the intention of it was to demonstrate the diversity of the sea of thieves community.
But I have realized that the community can not be depicted by just 1 flag, we need to have multiple to show support for multiple causes, especially when the one flag we have to display diversity is used by trolls.

So what is the solution I propose? More flags for different causes, resulting in more inclusion. But what about the trolls?
It will become easier for rare to figure out which minorities are being trolled upon.

Before someone in the comments say “it’s a can of worms they shouldn’t open, if a minority some people disagree with gets a flag, it’s all over.”
Well… 343 (Halo), another company owned by Microsoft, has been able to handle the balancing act, so why can’t Sot do it as well?

  • I supported the random system when it was truly a random system. Pre-captaincy, social media wasn't as tied into SoT, less individuality in gameplay.

I think random does serve a purpose as escapism for all. It's ok to not get involved while being inclusive.

Captaincy and social media have largely changed this. More individuality around and the "can of worms" already exists with people fighting/baiting/etc etc on social media about things.

My position currently and likely for the rest of my time here in the community is that whatever happens, happens. We are in it together and we will get through it together. That includes the upcoming community weekend and beyond.

Whatever they roll with I am cool with and will do whatever I think I can do to stay encouraging and fair in participation, to all people I interact with.

My observations over the years is that Rare is consistent socially. You don't have to agree, all you gotta do is be chill about it. That's easy for me to support. They should do what they feel is right, I'm happy to support that freedom.

I think the new flag is pretty and will serve many people and I am looking forward to the event.

  • @craftergames706 it’s been commented on before by mods but in a nutshell, real world flags like a pride flag or even country flags shouldn't belong in the game because: some countries wouldn’t exist in the time period, people would harass those flying pride flags, and the game is an escape and meant to get away from the real world.

As a “non-heterosexual” person, I want representation in game BUT not at the expense of being trolled, abused, harassed, even having my life/others lives threatened. Death threats are a very real thing in our lives, the last thing we and Rare want to be dealing with.

I will say, the rainbow flag in game isn’t to represent pride, it’s a rainbow, and it says so in the description. If some fly it that way, then that’s fair.

The upcoming community day flag is as close as they can get away with. I will be flying this one with pride and in full support of my trans brothers, sisters, and non-binary individuals.

  • The last thing I want in a computer game is to be reminded of the worlds problems by seeing flags.

Just look at the 2 wars in the news, imagine if those 4 flags were in game, the havoc that would cause.

    New flag?

  • @foambreaker community day one.

  • The can of worms is already open I guess…

It's a reality of the space. They rely on engagement and social media/player content as a part of the marketing.

People are going to have opinions, people are going to get personal, life happens as the game gets older.

The game is their house, they get to decorate it how they want, they get to throw the kind of parties they wanna throw, they get to implement their values into the design.

People are free to not participate, not spend, etc etc.

Personally nothing about my activity will change based on others expressing their values in design or around the community through graphics or cosmetics.

Freedom is something I take seriously and want for others. The "can of worms" part is drama and drama exists in everything, I care much more about respecting the freedom of others to express themselves as they see fit, provided it doesn't harm others. They aren't harming others by existing and expressing themselves or by supporting each other through community opportunities. That's the point of community, to be there for one another.

  • This might not be my horse or my race, but I love to spectate from the bleachers and cheer/jeer. F76 added Pride flags and it was such a thing that now most people rock the icons just to make the bigots feel unwelcome.

On the one hand, I want to be supportive of the LGBTQ community. But on the other, what would it say if I chose to not wear the flag and the environment became similar to how the F76 reaction was? It'd just be bc I really like my flag, but it'd look bad. I would obviously still rock it because it's more important to be supportive in times where people actually do still get hate mail and death threats and stuff. But at the same time, I selfishly really, really, really like my flag. Like a lot.

This might be my bias speaking, but I would rather Rare make it a part of the official lore that Pride groups never existed in SoT bc they never needed to. People fought over other arbitrary things like the name of your country.

    To the bold

It'll never happen here and I can tell you with confidence about why that is.

I've been here years as someone that isn't apart of cliques, not a part of the sot network, just me, sharing a lot of opinions that often times challenge popular parts of the community.

The environment changes over time and my opinions often change or shift as the environment changes and as I change as a person.

Nobody ever tells me what to do or say, ever. Nobody pressures me.

Why? because that's not their intent and because I am respectful in how I offer opinions. That's all it takes to do alright.

You never have to get involved, if you don't want to, and you are welcome to if you do.

That's all this is and all it's going to be. This isn't about taking away from people, it's about supporting people. Everyone stills gets to go about their business as they see fit.
