Galleon Improvements

  • Though it’s probably my least played ship, the Galleon is by far my favourite, it’s grand scale makes for an imposing presence of the Sea of Thieves, but by no means is it perfect, having a gander round ship, I have a few ideas which might make the Galleon better, only one or two ways changing the way it plays slightly.

The first and least likely to happen and least popular idea is the removal of the fourth gun. As a helmsman almost all of the time, I rarely if ever get on the fourth gun, and even then when another crewmate is on damage-con and I’m taking over his/her spot. I get the upscaling, but I think practically a three gun broadside is the most common way combat is done. Perhaps in replacement have two guns at the prow of the ship by the harpoon and one aft to give it teeth at any angle, but again I highly doubt this idea will be popular or wanted.

As for the rest, I hope these improvements will be more favourable, the Galleon is a big ship, and has a lot of space, but is inefficiently used up and feels mostly empty, improvements do not need to be balance altering but more crew oriented. For example; instead of a single oven/stove, have up to four for all of the crew, and next to it a big table for everyone to sit down at, and a chandelier above, like at the forts. Where the window is below the captain’s cabin, which is only there for looks, why not have it as actual quarters for the rest of the crew with three beds. Make the Galleon feel tailored for the whole crew, not just the Captain.

The bottom deck, though mechanically important, is a wasted space, more so with the Brig, which is used for trolling or never used at all. Take away the brig, even on the Brigantine, who uses it? Perhaps instead have a pulley system like at Sovereigns to harpoon items onto a platform and lower it into the bowels of the ship. Use it as a proper storage area, with easier access, when buying cannon, wood, and storage crate’s etc, have them spawn there mayhaps?

These are just some of my thoughts, while I love the Galleon, the space could be better designed and utilised, hopefully in ways that does not upset balance, but is more crew immersive, and make it feel tailored towards the whole crew, rather than the captain and his/her Cabin.

  • I don't think I'd class any of these suggestions as improvements.

Just because your crew playstyle doesn't involve use of 4 cannons doesn't mean others don't.

Sure in proper organised hourglass battles you usually only have first broad where helm has chance to shoot alongside others but in adventure especially against smaller ships tanking where you keep ship stationary and just rotate is a valid strat to offset smaller ships being more maneuverable.

The points about space are somewhat valid, but then the gally being oversized and clunky with far to run is an offset in balance for having the largest crew. I don't think it's about making every ship more efficient

  • @hiradc Fair points, some I didn't consider tbf, especially the static-turn strat.

As for the rest I get that it is for balance sake given the largest crew, but even so I feel there could be more to a Galleon without impacting it's balance. It just feels a bit bland in its current state.

Adding concepts like they did with Spanish Forts such as the multiple stoves/cooks and extra beds can make it feel more tailored to the crew than just its Captain, more immersive I guess. But that's my take, if it upsets game balance then who am I to argue?

Out of interest, what would you recommend or believe would be a good addition/change to the Galleon? Or is it fine as it is?

  • The galleon is currently made to be a balance with all other ships, and if you asked me earlier into my time on the seas, i would agree to reduce cannons, but the rare cases where all 4 members can get on the cannon are the only major advantage the galleon has. The brigantine has speed as its advantage, and the sloop has maneuverability and tankiness for its advantage. Take away the 4th gun and you would be taking away one of its only strengths. And while it could be argued that it would be fair to give it 2 stoves, 1 for each person would leave the sloop and brig a bit under par for cooking potential since they dont have a stove per member.

As for the brig in the belly of a galleon, it isnt just used for trolling, some times it has come in handy for open crews considering the person doing the trolling can find them self in there.

  • @goldsmen All fair points. As for the Brig. Wouldn't it be easier and more expeditious to simply kick him from the crew? (I haven't run as open crew so I don't know if you can honestly.)

  • I wouldn't change anything about the galleon, it's good as it is, especially the fourth cannon, which is extremely important in a battle because even though the helmsman needs to be more aware of the angle than firing the cannon, when the enemy crew is dominated, it's It is essential to use the fourth cannon for a quicker victory.

  • The bottom deck, though mechanically important, is a wasted space

Waste of space, fill it with water and you got an indoor pool.

You can't and for good reason: it would not be fun to sail for some time with a crew that kicks you out after voyages or a world event before turning in loot so a friend of them can join instead.

Rare dont want to add the ability to kick people, and for good reason. There are some people who start an open crew with 3 friends, and have locked people in the brig with intent to kick them out just before selling, or after that person proposed something like a gilded athena voyage, just to get another friend on. Imagine seeing a shrouded ghost and instantly getting kicked so some one elses buddy could kill it.

As long as the person stays in that brig, they cant invite their other friend on, and they get the rep and gold for the voyage if they do it. Which is an example of some one exploiting the brig, but if kicking could be exploited the same way, there would be nothing you could do, you would just instantly lose out on something.
