Season 10 Delay

  • So, it was announced that Season 10 has been delayed for 3 months till October 19th, confirming my worst fears: The Monkey Island Update is indeed just a content drip feed until Season 10 drops.

I’m so disappointed. Like, I really wanted to give Rare the benefit of the doubt on this one but I really can’t express how much this is going to fracture the community further.

This now does make sense with their releases of the obsidian items, stretching the tall tales over 3 months, announcing events in between months, and the dreaded season extending timer we saw a while ago.

Again, big disappointment and gives me no reason to login and play when I sorely want to. I love this game, I truly do, but this is hurting now.

edit - Having spent some time listening to both sides, I’m still left with a sour taste in my mouth. I just need to detach myself from the game slightly and take what they announce with a pinch of salt. A real shame considering my deep love for the game.

  • @tesiccl Ahoy matey!

It sucks, it sure does... and none of the team wanted it to be this way.
But I hope you can see that they are at least being open and honest - without spoiling features.

There's good stuff on the horizon... it's just going to take a bit more spit and polish. Oh and merging features from Seasons 10 and 11, should help with a massive boost of content when it arrives.

  • @tesiccl as I just play once per week since a while and a friend still couldn't reach lvl 100 due to summer holidays, I don’t care...still got much to do...I'm broke ingame due to trinkets and shipcosmetics, so more time to make money 😁

But I understand it can be disappointing to some...

  • @tesiccl where did you see this announcement?

  • This will be tough on the dev team at Rare too. Both from a professional and personal point of view. No studio wants these kind of delays, it's never good for business or optics.

It will have been the most difficult decision but, ultimately, we have to trust it's the right one going forward. They were obviously not confident at all that they could deliver Season 10 on time in a state that would have benefited the game.

There will be extra pressure on the devs to deliver for October 19th now, so I think it's worth keeping a sense of perspective and acknowledging the people, the real people, working on this game and to show them appreciation for all they do.

  • @hiradc Over here:)

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/season-ten-update

  • @hiradc Twitter.

  • @realstyli I show my appreciation for them and have defended them quite vigorously for decisions they make a lot on this forum, but in this instance I’m not going to allow that to side step how I feel.

I’m not annoyed, just disappointed we all have to wait more for this ‘mysterious content’ they can’t announce because they want to build hype when the time is right and make us forget we’ve waited nearly a year for.

  • @musicmee that horizon keeps getting further and further away though, that’s where my disappointment comes from.

Such a shame to deliver bad news while they’re riding the high of the Monkey Island update.

  • @tesiccl

Think of it this way, they could be patching things or making things better so that the game can be improved in a great way, and they're thinking quality of season 10 over getting it out quickly

  • @tesiccl

I'm very disappointed too, don't get me wrong. But I think there will be a lot of disappointment at Rare as well. Morale will be low and the negativity around social spaces won't help that.

Maybe we'll get to know a lot more in the next podcast regarding Season 10, and that's why they promoted that on the video. If they haven't told us the details of what features are coming, it's likely they have a lot of stuff that's not locked down.

While spreading the Monkey Island Tall Tales out may have a conscious decision to fill the void, I think that was probably the better option over having them all at once and nothing until Season 10.

  • @tesiccl Need a bigger spyglass ;)

But no, aye, I get ya 🖤

I know you won't desert us forever... take a look at some of the other games out there for now... Rare won't judge you for filling the gap with other content.

  • @realstyli it’s the constant spreading of content over each month that’s become so common now within the game. We can’t have multiple events close to each other now, because that’s gonna hurt their drip feed schedule. I don’t want it to become the norm when I login for a day, do what they want, then not come back till next month. That’s how it feels right now, that should not be the case!

  • @musicmee steady on sailor! ;)

I shouldn’t have to, that’s my point, but I’m having to play other stuff because SoT just isn’t meeting expectations anymore. I love this game so much, but it’s really on a lul. Season 10 better slap me in the face with a fish when it comes, that’s all I’m saying…

  • I think you should stop working to seasons and just release updates when they are ready. That way there is no pressure on any of the teams to crunch for their season release.

  • While disappointing from a players perspective, these delays are usually for good reason. I don't think we as a playerbase will find out why but whatever has caused the delays must be pretty crucial and I honestly feel for the dev team. Most of the hardwork they put in isn't always seen by the players so we often fail to appreciate just how difficult these decisions must be for the team.

  • @tesiccl

Unfortunately, it's the reality of game development. In an ideal world, they would want to constantly add content - it keeps players playing and paying. It doesn't benefit them to hold back anything unnecessarily.

For a AAA studio, Rare are a small to medium sized, relatively (less than a third the size of Bungie, and split across multiple games). And to deliver what they have done in the last 5 years or so is astonishing. But delays are inevitable when they have high ambitions for the game and want to hit a quality threshold.

Yes, it's disheartening news, but it's time to channel the faith we had in Rare when the game launched and many wrote it off for its lack of content back then.

  • I can wait a delay even if the seas will be empty outside of Tall Tales but I'm extremely worried for Season 11 (Season 10.5) being significantly cut down in size.

If I remember the recent interview at SOTfest correctly the only part of Season 11 that was mentioned was a PvP hourglass expansion into adventure mode.
I'm assuming that's all we get and even that may be bare bones.

  • @realstyli then they should tell players what they’re working on and keep people’s excitement that way. I’ve never agreed with the secrecy behind Rare’s way of doing stuff. Yes, keep PoTC and Monkey Island a secret, but it’s not the way to keep an audiences attention, especially nowadays when so many games vi for our attention and money.

At its foundation, content roadmaps should be released, telling us what they’re working on, with no time frame, and scrap the idea of seasons. It’s boxing them in and putting a timer on their workload.

  • @vaughnsot makes me think, is our “content” just adventures and mysteries now? Temporary content that gets removed after 2 weeks.

  • @tesiccl Adventures will no longer be time limited going forward as stated in the last podcast

  • @peony7185 oh I know, but nothing says when that’s going to happen.

  • @tesiccl

The alternative, unfortunately, is a road littered with broken promises. Look at Overwatch 2, for example, launched on the promise of a PvE story mode that got abandoned shortly after the game released.

I'm sure Rare tell us what's coming only when they are certain on what they can deliver.

  • @tesiccl After the Monkey Island tall tales release, I believe Mike Chapman said so on Twitter or X now I guess, though I don't have a Twitter so I can't fact check that any more

  • @realstyli not if they don’t ‘promise’ it as much as say this is what they want to do, and set people’s expectations properly instead of dangling them on a string hoping and waiting.

Blizzard have a long reputation of releasing a game and then not supporting it properly only to move onto the next thing and let the endless cycle continue. Rare are different, they’ve been supporting this game and they’ve done it well, BUT something’s changed and now they’re lacking, even with more people working at the studios.

  • Like I've said on the previous delay and other numerous occasions.

Drop these self implicated dead lines. You look unprofessional.

If you are meeting someone in any environment and you say Oh I will be there in 15minutes, because you want to show them how dedicated and fast you are, but you end up coming in 45 minutes, you look like a biggest Richard on the planet.

Instead if you said I'm coming in 1 hour, but you show up in 45 minutes, it creates a good impression.

The only reason I see you keep the seasons is £ from plunder pass.

So perhaps given how long these seasons are running, maybe just maybe extend them beyond 100 so pirates who finished their season pass in MARCH can still enjoy it :D?

  • @zig-zag-ltu if they didn't release roadmap they are seen as not open with their community, I'd rather they did and admit unable to meet deadlines than not, it Still makes me feel more included than all plans being withheld and shrouded in mystery. Even without planned timeline it would have been obvious that this season has been severely delayed

  • @tesiccl

Unfortunately, even if they don't explicitly promise to add features/content, a lot of misinformed folk will hold them to it and question what's taking so long to add them.

Mike Chapman's "Sea of Tease" comments are probably the only hints we will get at things coming until they are ready to be announced. While that may be frustrating, it's arguably better for the perceived integrity of the studio.

  • Delays aren't really something you can reasonably criticise, there's technical and monetary restrictions on the game and dev team. They are working on it and if it can't be ready in time or things have to be tweaked, it's better to delay than to release broken or half finished stuff.

Play other games, there's so many good games out there, both bitesized singleplayer stuff and long live service multiplayer stuff. I take massive breaks from SoT, playing all kinds of games. No sense waiting around for your favourite game to drip feed you some content again.

  • Rare, if a good time for releasing drip fed pirate themed cosmetics exist - THIS IS THE TIME.

  • @hefty-henri I will absolutely criticise them because we’re told when to expect the next load of content. If they fail to deliver on that deadline, that is on them. If they want to remove that expectation, they should remove the deadline by removing Seasons. This delay delay delay thing doesn’t go down well with other studios when they’re about to release a game then have to delay it, so Rare gets no immunity either.

If Rare were an isolated instance then I could forgive it, but how many games are delayed nowadays because the studios are promising dates they know they can’t deliver then the game is dead on arrival? It’s frustrating for the studio yes, but even more for the players.

  • I guess we are also not getting Mysteries for Season 11. (Probably none for Season 10, i'd bet on it)

We are supposed to be 4 Mysteries in at this point (Not including orher season delays, we'd be 5 or so in if things went as planned) and if we're lucky and get 1 in this combo season that's still 3 that never happened.
After the first mystery ended OVER A YEAR AGO I was really looking forward to seeing Mysteries improve each season and become a great way to finish off each season but nope.

I really hope things get better one day.

  • Well. As not a fan of monkey island, if there is t anything else to add between now and October

I’m gonna slowly for the first time in 5 years take a monthly break. Unless they give something worth playing between now and then

  • @vaughnsot at this point, I have my doubts. I was skeptical about the build up to Monkey Island but from now on I’ll be taking everything they say with a pinch of salt.

  • @burnbacon nothing announced other than some in game events that add nothing new. So no.
