NPC Quartermasters

  • Wanted to suggest the idea of hiring NPC Quatermasters for your ships, possibly as a feature available as a perk of Captaincy. There’s so many wonderful characters in Sea, and Kate Capsize was the straw that broke the camels back for me of wanting to share my voyages with them.

If you’ve played Black Flag, you’d likely agree Adewale and Anne Bonny made fantastic presences’ and really enriched long voyages and combat encounters. They don’t serve a gameplay function, but they can serve as a fantastic narrative tool. Imagine Belle, Lesedi, Merrick (when the Brethren are defeated) or any hallmark character calling out barrels and shipwrecks, cheering you in on combat, or having narrative triggers like Belle singing if you play ‘We Shall Sail Together’.

The only downside I can imagine is them becoming an obstacle or distraction in combat, which feels incredibly easy to solve by adding a ‘toggle quartermaster’ option the same as pets, which would have them disapparate the same way Jack Sparrow does in open conflict. Of course, I’d much rather have them in the heat of the battle for the fun. Alternatively they could end up talking too much, but this could also be managed with a dialogue option like High on Life’s to adjust the frequency of phrases.

  • Honestly that would be pretty fun. It wouldn't affect balance as they wouldn't have any functionality (probably couldn't have them spotting ships by themselves or pointing out boarders), and it could be fun! Maybe when you spot a skelly ship through your spyglass they would have a certain line, and they could play songs with you to add another instrument.

They would probably have to be stuck to the ship, as bringing them while boarding or exploring an island would require too many different animations and phrases probably.

The only downside is that it probably isn't financially feasible. They would have to bring in the voice actors and record enough unique lines so that they don't get incredibly annoying, and then program in some additional animations. My guess is in the end for Rare it wouldn't be worth it.

But I would love it if it were to happen! I get the game is better played with others, but with my schedule playing with a recurrent crew is just too difficult to line things up, and Open Crew is a mess. Jumping on LFG is not bad, but sometimes I just want to do my own thing, and I think this would help liven up the ship a bit.

    Great suggestion!
