I've seen posts about this issue from 2 years ago. It may be that I'm not allowed to talk about it any more but I'd like to bring this up anyway after having it happen while I was teaching a friend how to do quests. It was a perfect opportunity to talk about the "Loot isn't yours until it's sold" idea, but it still doesn't sit right with me that it happened. We were completing a Gold Hoarders vault quest, got the vault key from Krakens Fall, and it sent us to Mermaids Hideaway (which is a bit far, but it was for a Gold vault so I understand a bit, I would like to see it at least contained to the map quarter you're in I.E. the Wilds, but that's not what this post is about). After we sailed across the map to the vault and completed it after a little work (I had our new player find the vault door and key location on his own) we looted the vault successfully pulling out all the chests, and put them outside the door, before the vault closed and we collected the gold. We returned to the ship and as I sailed it closer to the vault entrance I to harpoon, I noticed a fresh spawn captained sloop leave Port Merrick and make a B line for us. I did not want to teach my day 1 friend about combat against a crew that I could see had full athenas levels and a sail I've never seen before, because they would just get griefed, so I had us run into the fog and leave our 3rd on the island, who is a year 1 player just returning to the game for the first time. I got wind and outsailed the ship, attempting to talk to them after I went overboard but they sort of ignored me? Just saying that "Hey he's in the water and talking to us" and then not responding to anything I said. I lost them in the fog and had our 3rd return to the ship so I could sail us back to the island before they noticed us. We arrived back and found the main entrance of the vault already closed, leaving our treasure in the chamber in between. This felt very underwhelming and disappointing. Not only had we completed the quest, and managed to evade our attackers, but we had sailed and played this quest for just over an hour. It felt like a spit to the face, and I'd like to posit something to help fix this in the future for other crews. In my opinion, there should be about a 30 minute to an hour timer, or until all loot is removed from the vault entrance, before the cave shuts. That way even if a crew ends up fighting over the loot like we may have been, or if you are forced to leave the island during a volcano in the Roar, you can return to the loot you already got out of the puzzle room door, and retrieve it. Alternatively there should be an in game warning this will happen as this is over a longer more complex quest, I know we don't like having the game tell us the mechanic, and players should be forced to learn the hard way, but I think this was a little overly unforgiving for leaving for about 10 minutes and then coming back. That or the vault key should be retrievable for the crew who placed it, to reopen just the entrance, although I do see that this could act as an easier to use and more extreme version of burying treasure and crews could use these like personal treasure holders. I believe the best option is to have the island not close the cave entrance until the loot is removed, allowing anyone to go in and steal or retrieve the loot that was left here, and that the door will not close again unless another crew has gotten the vault key for the same island. Please give other ideas that could be a possible fix for this issue. I do not want to see responses that claim this is a "Risk and Reward" feature, or a balancing feature. The game would be better off with this, the quest is already completed at this time, and the main vault room has been either successfully, or unsuccessfully finished, and this would simply add quality of life. Please give constructive criticism to this idea, and avoid interacting with this if you simply want to disagree and say all pirates should know better, as it is not outlined in any part of the quest, and there is no warning sign that this will happen like the treasure rooms doors shaking, alluding to the closure of the door. The door shaking is another possible quality of life fix to this issue.
Hoarder Vault Entrance
@oonoseyoo The island resets once you get far enough away from it, the entrance door closing is just part of that reset. Tbf I don’t think that could be done as an exception and it’s just unfortunate, but at least you’ll know for next time. Maybe keep a crew member on the island to move the loot while you sail away, bury the treasure if need be too.
The outer stone door of a vault should not close when an island resets but instead should close on a timer after say 30 mins elapses from when the vault key was used.
This is not a difficult change for the devs to make.
It’s really annoying getting your loot stuck in a vault because an enemy crew decided to attack your ship forcing you to leave the immediate waters surrounding the island which then causes the stone door to shut.
This is just a small QoL change to remove the possibility for an unnecessary frustration to occur.
