Smurfs

  • Hello, why did you make a selection of professional players and beginners together? it is also impossible to play, my friend and I played, had fun, professional players came and destroyed it all. looted the citadel for two hours, and they came and took everything away in 5 minutes, they also danced over our corpses, changed the server, and the same situation, we swim in the sea, we see the ship of skeletons, as soon as we destroyed it, a good player sailed and just us killed everyone. Please fix it

  • Citadel? You mean the sea fortress right?

That's a new player activity, I personally do one from start to finish in like 15-20 probably.

And this game has no professional players, it's just unfortunate you guys ran into these pirates, who appear to have been toxic as per your description.

Also bear this in mind, how would you separate the two player bases, given how much freedom you have in this game? We don't have ranks, the only thing that has matchmaking happens in the sandbox too.

    Also picture this scenario:

You have played this game for 5 hours (Noob)
Your mate played this game for 15 hours (Noob)

You start doing this 'citadel' and the other ship sails by. Let's say the ship is solo and the pirate in charge has 3000 hours (''professional'' :D)

Let's say you have a quick chat and it turns out you all support ''Leeds United'' and become instant mates. So now you have a crew that's a mixed bag? What happens now?

Do you sail around the noob server with your mate stomping everyone with your help?

Or do you go to ''professional'' server where you are useless and sink every time as you can't hold your ground against other ''professionals''?

  • Hi,

Yes, the early hours of playing can be tough, but that's the gist of the game and I am not trying to sound rude or facetious, but the nature of the game is in the title and it sounds like you have merely gone through the shock that all of us players go though at some time when we realise the sea is a very dangerous place. Sometimes, a Kraken or Skelly ship can pop up at the worst moments too and be more annoying than other players. In my experience, very coincidental AI enemy attacks have been far more soul destroying than other players, especially when solo and I have a load of loot and a double skelly pops up haha!

IMO there is nothing "toxic" about players hunting others repeatedly or acting...well like thieving horrid pirates. Pirates were (and still are) literally terrorists - just google Henry Every. Anyway, when I play with me mates, we do have a code that we do not continue repeat attacks on new players, but there is nothing wrong with players who choose to do so. You will just have to fight it out or scuttle. Practise makes perfect. Its also worth trying to appeal to the good nature of other players, this has worked for me before - although granted it won't work all the time.

Despite the graphics and presentation - it can be a deceptively tough game and sometimes unforgiving, but also totally surprising and occasionally heart-warming. Yesterday, I went after a fully crewed reaper Brig (I was solo sloop) and when I got there proceeded to shout "stand and deliver - your money or your lives" haha! That all said, I am not sure they heard me as I had mic issues and had to type too just in case. The 4 lads actually offered me free loot as a gift. They may have just felt sorry for me as I am not the best in combat, or thought I was slightly mad to think I could take them on and simply respected the risk I was taking - who knows. But they all wanted to give me a gift to sell. I then told them (and it is true) that I was looking for easy pickings to save up for a ship of my own to name after my cat who passed away last week so their gift was very much appreciated.

If they fought me, then I would have lost for sure as they were all higher levels. But its a risky game and I like gambling - and every time we boot up the game, we are going to be a part of that whether we like it or not.

We have all been there where we are hunted, but in the words of Qui-Gon Jinn; "there's always a bigger fish" and there will always be bigger and nastier "professionals" that those who attacked you yesterday will try and avoid too.

Good luck out there - keep sailing.

  • There is no matchmaking in standard adventure, it is near impossible to estimate someones "ranking" in a fairly casual pvpve game

  • Surf isn't the correct term for this lol.

A smurf is a high tier player that creates a new account, usually for not nice or ego reasons.

  • @thisisamalon can't smurf if there's no matchmaking (outside of hourglass)

  • @thisisamalon You won’t be able to get better at the game unless you face against higher skilled players. Keep at it and you’ll get there. We all started at the bottom in the beginning :)

  • You'll do wonderful things and once in a while you will randomly meet wonderful people during your adventures.

It just takes time to get there.

Think of SoT like skateboarding. No matter how skilled someone gets at their passion, everyone falls down sometimes. It's random, it's imperfect, there is risk, everyone falls, sometimes. It's alright to fall, it's a part of the process.

You will lose and you will sink, we all do, sometimes

but you will also find your way if you stick with it, you will do things later that you don't see as realistic right now.

Give yourself some time, there is no hurry, if you get up and brush off and try again you will do awesome going forward.

  • Please fix it

    What is broken?
I had a new player, who just happen to watch a few YouTube videos, rowboat over to my ship with three kegs and blow up me ship

How did I know he was new? I asked and his progress stats showed only 100 hours or so

Does that make them a pro?

  • That doesnt quite qualify as a smurf, but i can say this is one of the most balanced games there is, once you get a captained ship and a little gold, you have all the same tools as any legend with every faction maxed. You CAN still beat a more skilled player, it isnt as easy, but its absolutely possible, and well before i reached legend i have taken out a few legends, so it is very possible. I have even been sunk by a few people who are new to the game just because i couldnt predict what they were going to do.

Not really, on Xbox you can look them up. The other day I was sunk by two players who talked tons of toxic in chat. Looked them up, ~150k gamer score each.

  • @foambreaker

I have 110k and 98k between my 2 accounts lol. GS is no measure of skill.

    ????

Ok? 2 guys with super high gamer score, I don't see how this has literally anything to do with the discussion tbh, cause Xbox GS has nothing to do with SoT and I can't imagine Rare would go to that extent to check your GS and put you in lobbies with... higher or lower GS players. GS has nothing to do with game skill at all?

  • @thisisamalon This is why I never recommend this game to friends or family. Don't expect Rare to change things either. They'll just tell you to take your beatings

The unexpected unpleasantness a lot of people experience during their first few experiences with pvp is still around, people see adventure marketing and lots of adventure content and there are often unpleasant introductions to what else is a part of the game.

The experience for new players is ever changing though outside of that. New players don't care about a lot of stuff that gets experienced players fired up, not even close to being a part of their world yet. The harshness of pvp encounters can still be there but the game around that has significantly more opportunity which gives players more options overall.

I can't in good conscience recommend that people get into the grinds much these days, but imo it will always be a "try it out and see how it goes" game for new players. I find the social areas to be increasingly unpleasant around the game (forums are still solid as people can actually have their ideas/opinions countered here without it just turning into people saying very harsh things to or about one another and disguise it as freedom/opinion) but I still believe a lot of people can find their way in this game with some time.

It takes some time and definitely some adapting but it's still an adventure game where new players and casual players can enjoy adventure experiences even with the above going on.

I would recommend to new players to avoid all of the social areas, it heavily influences a person's sot experience, play organically, build connections organically, avoid twitter and twitch and discord servers and even the forums and just play and experience random adventure. Add people that are chill in game, keep in contact to see if regularly crewing is an option and compatible.
