I'm not sure that having a reaper 5 appear so quickly on the map is what the developers had in mind. I can spend an hour or two building my athena emissary and then quickly have a reaper 5 come on the map and attack me. If I get sunk I'm done for the day. I'm not going to start all over again. So...losing interest in the game. I think the guppies could use a little more leverage against the sharks. I would like to get rid of reaper 5s being able to see other emissaries on the map. That would put some life back into the game.
Reaper emissary
the ships popping out randomly on a regular basis is likely something that is here to stay
between HG and portals and merges it's going to happen a lot, on top of all the hopping with supply flooding
You're gonna need a more efficient athena strat
Veils level the grade quickly so you can sell some loot at grade 3 or 4 within 20-30 minutes by doing part of the veil and selling
Holding loot has never been a good way to go about this game, gotta keep stuff sold.
If I get sunk I'm done for the day. I'm not going to start all over again.
Why? It not that hard to lvl up emissary for any faction.
So...losing interest in the game.
Why...because another pirate ship sunk you?
I would like to get rid of reaper 5s being able to see other emissaries on the map. That would put some life back into the game.
But that is there "Goal" To sink other emissary. Without it, they are just...nothing.
That to say, other Factions will just start sinking each other, not just Reapers. Oh that sounds better!I fail to see how that would put life into the game...
If it wasn't a Reaper 5 hunting you, it'd just be another crew that happened upon you, at least when a reaper appears, you can keep track of them, and chances are if there are multiple reapers, they'll butt heads if they get close enough, I know I share no sympathy for my fellow flames.
I get it sucks having another (sometimes larger) crew hunt you down and ruin all your hard work, but removing the reaper 5 buff won't fix the problem of people hunting others down, any emissary can be a ship sinker, the reapers are just up front about it.
The only thing about the R5s that appear suddenly due to hourglass is that they also tend to dive soon or go to Reapers and sell out.
If a Reaper 5 is out in the water, sailing in circles, I don't pay much attention, if he is going from fort to fort for example, those are the ones that will come and attack you.
Sea forts no. They aren't likely to attack unless you get too close. PvE reapers play quick and low key.
Now the ones going from WE to WE? They might come after you, especially if they get within render distance and you have a big flag lol.
Portal hopping should lower your emissary at least 1 level. 😈
Emissaries were designed with the entire intent of reapers being able to see them at grade 5. Its a risk reward system, you get a LOT more gold with an emissary than without, but the trade off is at any time a reaper can raise their flag and get the grade up, or even get merged into the server through some means, then see you on the map.
If you dont want to deal with reapers seeing you on the map, there IS something you can do about it! Dont raise a flag, the gold bonus is only there if you are willing to take the risk, not to give you free gold with no risk, otherwise the 2.5x multiplier would be on by default.
Edit: I thought this seemed familiar and looking into it, this is your second post about removing reapers ability to see you. As well as one of many posts trying to nerf reapers. Reapers are already disadvantaged when it comes to map visibility, they dont need nerfed.
Grade 5 Gold Hoarder? 20 Captain's Chests.
Grade 5 Merchant? 20 cargo crates
Grade 5 Order of Souls? 20 Villainous Bounty Skulls
Grade 5 Athena? idk i just got PL but some cool athena stuff i guess
Grade 5 Reaper? You see other ppl on the map. Getting rid of that removes any grade 5 bonus for the reapers, which makes it less usefull compared to getting insane loot. Seeing other ships is already a worse thing than an emissary voyage.@captainluke56 Actually I agree with you, I think spending hours building an emissary of LV 5 collecting treasures and then being shot down by the usual reaper is unnervating, just the other day I had collected treasures by raising the emissary of Athena to level 5 and then finding myself robbed after hours of playing.
@nohr-tenko This is true, but if a player is alone he will never be able to grow and become a legend, and this is at the expense of all new pirates.

What are you doing that it take hours to get to grade 5? They can all be done in an hour easily. And if you are worried about your loot. Don't forget the age old saying
Don't carry more loot than you are willing to lose.
@captain-coel When I sail alone in a sloop I make long crossings and stay away from emissaries, but I don't know how they fall on me just when I'm about to go sell the treasure. And the strange thing is that I don't even see them coming.
@peppmarinu just need to raise ur awareness brother all these new pirates are learning things the wrong way it's all to easy now. The game is different now. 1st rule. ALWAYS CHECK THE HORIZON
@captainluke56 your choice is either do it without emissary and forgo on the bonus, or the risk vs reward check your map and horizons often.
Portal hopping reapers can be frustrating as even with high diligence they can appear from nowhere but honestly they're not as common now
I don't even check map for reapers as they dive for hourglass 9 times out of 10. Outside of doing fofs I'd say emissaries probably have an easier time now than they have had in awhile. This is gauging from seeing lfgs where just norm reaper is a lot rarer.
Just to add I personally do reaper a lot less (still pvp) since the intro of sovereigns as selling is so much more efficient at outposts
I think it would be wiser to try and improve your awareness and how fast you complete voyages instead of making posts complaining about reapers every time they sink you. I can understand the frustration and most players myself included have been in your position. The game sure has a lot of problems but reapers and their ability to see other emissaries is not one of them.
@foambreaker
Well running an emissary is a risk for all parties involved, and what is considered worthwhile is subjective. If you aren't confident in your ability to acquire and sell loot fast enough before the reapers get to you there is nothing wrong with taking a less risky approach till you feel confident. As of now with the new QoL changes it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to complete a voyage reach level 5 and sell all the loot.I agree with both of these statements.

Most reapers I encounter organically turn and run when I approach. But yea, I consider portal hopping with reaper 5 to be an exploit, though honestly I don't feel it'd be hard to fix so I guess it's working as intended by the devs.

Only when they introduce some way so you can't chain emissary voyages easier for non-Reaper emissaries by going through a portal by just going from 4 to 5 on the new server.
Or are voyages still removed when you portal hop ?
@lordqulex I think devs stated it wasn't necessarily a mechanic they had planned but they didn't deem it an exploit.
Honestly reaper flag aside people are pretty proficient at looking for ships and don't need the map. From looking at tables of which emissary they know the hotspot islands and routes or can just go more centrally and look in all directions
@hiradc I understand that, but this isn't about pirates like us.
There needs to be a balance between hunting and hiding, the cat and mouse game within the game. The primary concern is that the cats tend to be experienced pirates, and the mice tend to be newer pirates. In order to retain newer pirates and keep the player base growing, they need relief from the pressure of being repeatedly curb stomped by experienced players when they have virtually nothing to gain from it. (I hardly count starting supplies on a sloop as something worth attacking swabbies for.)
The challenge is there are a wide varieties of play styles by a diverse player base. To me, Sea of Thieves will always be about the treasure. Going and getting treasure, attacking others for their treasure, defending the treasure I've collected, and turning in what treasure I can. I don't attack emissaries unless they're level four or five, the amount of loot they have is just not worth my time before that. I only sometimes attack ships with no flag, maybe I'll go try and board before attacking to see if it's worth my time. But other pirates consider every ship "attack on sight" and don't even pick up the loot the other ship had. That's against the spirit of the game to me.
That I think is the core issue here: the spirit of the game sold to new pirates, and the real experience of the game by new pirates. Sea of Thieves won't thrive unless new players believe they are getting what they paid for, by either setting the PVP expectations up front with better adverts, or but curbing the bunny thumping by blood thirsty pirates.

That is the intent of this game. People are supposed to have the right to rob you no matter how much you have aboard your ship. As well if you want the 2.5x multiplier, there needs to be a risk to get over double the value of your loot, so if not making you more of a target. What would you propose replace that risk? If the answer is nothing, then why have a bonus in the first place instead of making that the default gains?

This is a positively evil idea. I love it. I think having to do some busy work every time you portal hop before you get back up to the full 2.5 value multiplier is a fantastic way to offset the ability for a fully leveled and stocked Reaper crew to pop in, devastate everyone minding their own business and then pop off to a different server to wash, rinse and repeat. Even playing on a Reaper crew myself me and my guys wouldn't mind that.

In hindsight I'm a little tepid on this...
We've all experienced what happens when you reach R5 on a server: ships immediately turn in and leave. Fresh ships joining your server just log out and back on.
Portal hopping may be the trade-off of pirates that just look for new servers the moment a reaper shows up...
