Smoke bombs and barrels

  • Smoke bombs, as the name implies, produce smoke. My suggestion is that they can be used like Blunder Bombs and Firebombs, both shot from a cannon or thrown by hand.

The smoke would be dense and dark, reducing vision significantly when inside, similar to that of the smoke AOE from Ashen Lords. This could be potentially, partially countered by ship flares or lanterns.

Fired from a cannon - The smoke bomb would produce a tall, billowed, smoke screen curtain for around 20-30 meters from the cannon in the direction it is fired. It would linger above the water for an amount of time before dissipating, say 10 seconds. This smoke screen can be used to obscure your ship from view. Like fireworks, this cannon shot would use a long fuse timer.

    Potential uses:

    • When being persued so that you can make changes to your heading to try and give you an edge in escaping by changing direction when hidden by smoke,
    • Obscuring obstacles such as shallow water, rocks and explosive barrels in the hope another ship will collide with them
    • Using the smoke screen to drop a rowboat into the water with your loot to try and flee.
    • Boarding an enemy vessel after covering them in smoke
    • Using in a fight to make it harder to target your vessel

Thrown by hand - The smoke bomb creates a small, short lasting bloom of smoke which lingers for around 5 seconds. The smoke would act as an obstacle to ranged mobs, they would not fire into/through smoke.

    Potential uses:

    • Boarding a player boat, using smoke to confuse the enemy. You could also use this to quickly Tuck-In / Barrel somewhere to hide on the boat.
    • Use against mobs to avoid getting shot by ranged enemies allowing you to escape or forcing them into melee
    • Shadow skeletons would be immune to the effects of smoke and also prevent lanterns from stunning them

Smoke Barrel - An explosive barrel which similar to the cannon variant produces a very large cloud of smoke which lingers for around 10 seconds. This can be ignited like a normal barrel, detonated with a shot, or if crashed into by a boat will trigger immediately.

    Potential uses:

    • Obstacle in the flotsam spawns that you can potentially run into
    • Throwing overboard to again obscure your movements from anyone following you
    • Using against mobs
    • A sellable item

  • I'm going to say no.

I don't think it would actually be effective since the ships are moving, but if it was I don't see that as a good thing. There are already too many stalemate fights and this would just add to that. The game already leans to far to "healing is OP" so additional defenses just make that situation worse.

  • I really do like the idea of smoke barrels that you can light like a keg, shoot, drop behind the ship, etc., to allow for more tactical options when it comes to naval. I also like the idea of shooting an enemy ship with a smoke bomb and "blinding" their cannoneers for a few seconds.

Anything that improves wacky pirate hijinks if fine with me.

  • I think it's a good idea, but I don't know how useful it would be without becoming a problem. If you're trying to conceal ship movement by firing these out of a cannon, it would have to be an incredibly large cloud to be able to cover the area required to be useful while moving. If it's made large enough to do this, imagine what will happen if you spam a few of these in a row...

Using smoke against mobs is also a bit tricky since it would affect your view as well, and currently skeletons don't care if there is smoke and will chase you or shoot through it no problem. I'm not sure if this could be changed or not, and it would affect the Ashen Winds and Fort of Fortune events quite a bit.

Yeah that is a good point. In my head I visualise it being a whoof of smoke, creating a tall curtain to block line of sight, it would be be about 3 quarters the height of a sloop mast, encouraing people to climb their own to maintain eye contact. With some distance or even being low on your ship it should provide ample obstruction.. in theory haha

I didn't want it to be too long a smoke screen both for performance and also for gameplay reasons, something that can be fired as you're moving. Once hidden change course and re-emerge on your new heading. Enough to force the enemy to stay on their toes. To avoid the spam I thought maybe like fireworks you can add the long fuse, perhaps an even longer fuse would be needed!

Yeah, the thought behind this is that it does also affect you, but that may be worth it at times if you're on low health, much like a magician just vanish in a cloud of smoke. Hopefully they could implement some code which would stop enemies from firing ranged weapons into smoke and either wait, reposition or switch to melee
