Can we get an update on private servers for competitive Sea of Thieves?

  • Yes, Competitive Sea of Thieves is a thing, yes it probably makes 0.01% of the player base.
That being said, it still includes some of the most dedicated and skill full players that the game has to offer.

I don't want to write paragraphs regarding "Comp SoT" but for people out of the loop this is how it works/looks currently in a bullet point format:

    1. Since Arena died along with NAL, Competitive scenes for SoT has still been cropping up and are well alive.
Problems is, is the vast amount of time setting up for Competitive games is based off the players, there's virtually no support from RARE themselves.
Private servers are given by partners that are willing to support players/comp scene out of respect.

    2. Since there is no custom options in private servers (Outside of choosing how many ships you want on a server) Supplying up takes up to an hour doing a Tall tale to gather cannonballs/food/planks. A one hour+ effort that could be solved in 2 minutes if custom options where made available.

    3. The Beauty of SoT has always been "Tools not rules", having community's the freedom of playing the game the way they want to (If not breaking rules of course)
Yet the competitive side has always been hindered in setup, the time put in doesn't reflect the ''lack of love'' that they get by RARE.

    4. I am not asking for an ''esport'' type deal, or for RARE to endorse competitive SoT, I am simply asking and begging for them to simply facilitate a part of the community that has always been present in the game an easier time to set up games when it comes to private PvP events. Such as the ability to select spawn points, spawn 'X' amount of supplies in barrels from the get go, a feature to turn on/off PvE would go a long way.

And yes HOURGLASS has been an amazing experience for teams (Yes teams and not just random crews) to go toe-to-toe against each other at the expense of smashing lower MMR opponents in between and is not always a fun experience for the receiving end.

tl'dr, Improve private servers to be more customizable outside of just choosing ship types. It has been one year since the NAL has requested updates for custom options in private servers, yet nothing on the horizon indicates change.
Supplying up from a TT and dealing with PvE encounters that increases RNG in what should be a ''fair'' PvP battle soaks in lots of hours wasted in which could be resolved with customizable options in private servers.

Therefore I would Love to hear from a RARE personnel if possible, what their stance is on private servers and if any major updates are to come in catering such communities.
Also I know this topic has been PvP focused, but also consider other community members and partners that provide private servers outside of PvP focused events what the possibilities could look like with customizable private server options.

To end it, I would recommend anyone interested in ''comp sot'' to look up League of Thieves on Twitch to show just how much production and love is given to a competitive community of teams/players and just the raw effort that is put in... These are man hours put in at their own discretion in keeping a niche part of the game alive. No paid promotion, no prize pool, etc.
Just a love for the game that imo should be catered a bit more towards to...

  • Make friends with or become a partner. Rare only cares about partners and content creators.

  • The amount of interest isn't as relevant as some may think imo

it's the type of activity, HG isn't popular overall but it provides an important service to the overall environment and within that contributed to boosting organic activity

which is a part of why private servers are important

yes it's great to offer competitive/coordinated players an option but ultimately it pulls out skill temporarily which is exactly why HG was a success from an environmental effect perspective.

More consenting and competitive combat directly supports the organic environment by removing pressure from those that produce

so even if it's .01% or whatever it's still important overall

That's not the problem/issue highlighted in this post.
Anyone can sign up for teams and partake in these PvP Events, it's more so the ''tools'' that are lack luster and hours spent setting up said events. (Lack of tools in setting up private servers)
I am in a fortunate position where I can pull a few strings and get a private server on short notice, its more so the lack of tools of what I want to be able to achieve.
If I want to set up a PvP event, I cannot do it solo as I would need to amass thousands of cannonballs, yet if Private servers had options, this could be done with a few clicks on the mouse in a minute.

This is the core of what my post is really about. : More options in private servers = more flexibility for communities that have access to private servers in what they want to achieve for their communities.

Yeh I would agree, most actual ''sweats'' that partake in competitive sea of thieves spend most their time in Hourglass dives then organic adventure PvP.
Simply because having a full team on gally sinking a swabbie sloop with 50 hours played just isn't fun nor satisfying... We rather leave them alone and fight opponents of equal skill.

Although with the recent FoF change, a few days where you would see an uptick of top sweats going for FoFs for that chest commendation etc. Let me tell you that after 3 thousand fights in Hourglass, the uptick in toxicity from sinking constant swabbies in adventure from stealing their Chest of Fortune was off the charts compared to HG toxicity which is surprisingly low on average.

However as much time and love I spend in HG, theres still minor issues I encounter:

    1. MMR is busted, sometimes I get matched against Open crew Galleons that triple sail drive by and sink to 2 lowers. Not very good practice neither is it fair nor fun for both parties involved.
    2. What Private servers PvP offers compared to two teams going up against each other in Hourglass is the RNG factor of supplies: Two top Competitive teams is not always balanced in hourglass when one has 300 cannonballs compared to the other armed with curses, 4k cannonballs and 50 pineapples to chunk on.
Competitive SoT eliminates that in creating a fair environment in creating equal supplies, thus more interesting battles.
    3. As you mentioned, interest in HG isn't that popular, so Queue times can seem to be lackluster outside of peak times, and going on a 20 streak sinking noobies isn't much to boast about.
That being said, HG is still in a great healthy state when it comes to activity and Queue times, especially peak times it's amazing.
I was really on my last straw with the game until they announced the Hourglass season. Sinking constant swabbies from organic hopping just wasn't cutting it anymore especially with Arena being removed it left a big gap...
  • I think it’s a good thing they’re limiting it to partners and content creators. That’s a lot of server processing and dedication for people to sit on an entire server by themselves and do nothing, cause we all know there will be thousands of people who will do this. I imagine they don’t want that technical nightmare. PLUS there are no server merges in a private server, imagine sitting in there for days/a week and the game can’t do anything but shut down to boot some people out?! Ew lol
