HG matchmaking is non-existent

  • My HG win ratio is less than 0.3, so I asked my opponent his level. (I'm at 70 servants) He was level 350 and win ratio above 0.8 Are you kidding me? This is soo mis-matched. I really try and stay positive but you can't when you're a casual and basically a punching bag for pro level players

  • I think the trouble is just a low pool of people utilising HG with the season 9 FoF/FotD/scaled world event shenanigans; coupled with zero new HG goodies this season

Youre just getting whatever the server pool can come up with for you. Maybe try convincing people sailing around to raise HG and take you on? Sometimes it works!

  • Your region and time of day you play hugely effect who you’re matched up with. If you have the possibility of changing either of these I’d encourage it. I usually play at night cause I know the sweats are on during the day where I am. I can take them on and probably win if I chose to but sometimes I just want an easy match :)

  • I think that this also has to do with what players are in the pool aswell.

If 90% of the matchmade players are veterans, winrate wont really help you, as many veterans will likely be at the same winrate as you.

  • (Takes a deep breath to explain this again.)

SBMM isn't broken, it's suffering from low participation.

    • Most of Rare's advertisements are PVE focused, so most pirates are probably PVE focused. Hourglass doesn't appeal to PVE pirates, so they don't participate.
    • Most PVP focused pirates like PVP because they're good at it or vice versa, so there are a lot of good PVP'ers enqueueing for hourglass.
    • Season 9 just dropped and made a nice QoL update for FotD and a new chest for the FoF, so many of the PVEVP'ers and PVP'ers are server hopping for forts if the official Discord server LFC is any indicator.
    • This likely means that the queues are filled almost exclusively by hardcore PVP'ers who don't care at all about adventure mode and simply live for the PVP.
    • In order to cut down on queue times, the SBMM engine needs to widen the skill gap required to make a match if no close match is found.
    • That means you'll get more imbalanced matches faster than equally skilled ones.

SBMM is working, but the pirate pool simply isn't big enough to find you a close match. Alternatively, you're new to hourglass and your MMR hasn't been established yet and the algorithm is still trying to assess you.

    Q.E.D.

  • Everyone is a sweat in someones eyes. You just have to accept the losses and cherish the wins. Once you will get to 100 (If thats your goal) you will see how much you have improved in a short period of time.

Me and my mate had a fight yesterday, those guys where parked up at Ancient Spire I believe, they allowed us to get close as they were probably gathering supplies or selling, we got a good shot on them, took their mast down, killed them...And then a chat message appears:

''These guys are pro'' shortly afterwards they scuttle their ship without trying to fight back...

In Morgan Freeman's voice Those guys were not pro. (we have the curse tho :D)

  • @zig-zag-ltu said in HG matchmaking is non-existent:

I try, but when you lose 4/5 matches constantly, even the most optimistic of players will get their spirit beaten down. I've found the best thing I can do is walk away from this game. That's the best think for my mental health

  • @gunnner1 Well perhaps do a pause, and get back on it when we have another XP boost, I got 60 levels during those 3 days or so. Perhaps I am a bit more experienced than you, but I agree you don't learn much from getting stomped. If you wait for the XP weekend, more casual players will come forth to fight and you will get valuable experience and knowledge. Currently as far as I am aware, majority of players participating in Hourglass are the kind of players who would log in for hourglass aka PVP players.

  • @gunnner1 I totally understand that, but I strongly encourage you to try again tomorrow. There was much more hourglass participation last Community Weekend, so the match making was 10x better.

But otherwise, remember, it's a race to 180 wins, 720 losses, or more likely somewhere in between. Every match gets you there, and the way I see it a loss is just one step closer to an easier opponent. 😜
