Arctic Desert

  • Ahoy mates. Today's topic is very distinctive and in some way, in my opinion, important for Sea of Thieves. Ye probably heard of it before... many times...and ye probably will hear about it many times after...
Behold, ye most "favourite" topic: New Region: Ice Wastes (Winter Biome).
Ice Wastes is the frozen wastelands of Sea of Thieves. It's a dangerous place, filled with Icebergs, which floats freely in the seas; Ice Formations, which will block the paths; Whirlpools, small bodies of rotating water, which can easily sink a rowboat or a pieces of treasure; Maelstroms, a bigger whirlpools, which can easily sunk ships; and many more.
Its islands is covered in everlasting snow and ice formations, which holds many secrets of lost/ancient civilizations and remainings of fearsome creatures. Some even hold tales of Long Time Extinct White Whales and Fearsome Creatures of Land, with Big Tusks and Covered in Furr (Mammoths).
Inhabitants of such region is snowshoe hares, goats, foxes, dodos, seals, walruses, knuckleheads (fish, Knucklehead Trout, DnD 5e), sharks, owls and seagulls.
However it is not all of it inhabitants. There is evil lurking in icy winds: a frozen skeletons, evil phantoms, sirens & ocean crawlers and lost souls, banshees. Banshees are frostmaidens, lost souls of piratess lost at sea.
But it's not the only danger you will face in such region. Snowstorms/Winter Storms/Blizzards are common in this region. They work as mists, blinding the sailors, freezing the ships and creating ice formations on the seas. Pirates are not recommended to sail during snowstorms/winter storms/ blizzards, it is very dangerous, you will lost control of your ship ( Won't be able to turn your wheel completely or partially, raise or lower sails & anchor, use harpoons).
Ice Wastes is also famous by its giant maelstrom, also known as "Charybdis Maelstrom". "Charybddis Maelstrom" takes place at the heart of Ice Wastes. This maelstrom holds a lot of secrets and treasures on its depth. Once in a while he opens it's depths for brave pirates to plunder, but noone has ever managed to go there and live to tell the tale.
However, there is "ray of sunshine among the darkness", two outposts who offer their services for lost pirates and great hunters of the seas, Frostwind Outpost and Outpost of Laughing Whale.
Outpost of Laughing Whale, sadly was abandoned a long time ago after the horrible "incident" which happened there.
But Frostwind Outpost is still active and glad to see new faces there. You can meet there:

    • Tofi the tavernkeeper at The Snorring Mammoth tavern
    • Torrun the shopkeeper at the Equipment Shop
    • Sigrunn the shopkeeper at the Shipwright Shop
    • Carr the shopkeeper at the Clothing Shop
    • Wengo the shopkeeper at the Weaponsmith's Shop
    • Eilif the shopkeeper at the Pirate Emporium Shop
    • Senior Trade Maria - Merchant Alliance representative
    • Hegg the Hoarder - Gold Hoarders Representative
    • Madame Oddny - Order of Souls representative
    • Sovereign Christopher - Sovereign representative
      And some familiar faces too:
    • Larinna - Blidge Rats representative
    • Mysterious Stranger - Athena's Fortune representative
    • The Castaway - gives A Pirate's Life Tall Tales
This two Outposts looks completely different from other Outposts. They built on ruins of Ancient buildings, covered in heavy lairs of hide, decorated by different bones & tusks, fishing nets and equipment, shells and strange relics.
I want to mention that there is no seaposts, active at least. There is few abandoned ones, which lies in ruins, consumed by nature.
That's it for now. If you have any comments, concerns, changes you want to add or remove, leave your comment below. Otherwise, I wish you to have a nice day or night and I will see you on the seas.

    With Best Regards,

    Selgewick The Seaman
    Chronicler of Legend
    Captain of "Fearless Nightgale"

  • Behold, ye most "favourite" topic: New Region: Ice Wastes (Winter Biome).

They have already said, they can not expand the map.

  • @selgewick

You aren’t the first person to suggest an Arctic zone. Some people have mentioned about transforming the Wilds into an Arctic zone.

Personally, I want to see the Wilds destroyed or better yet, transformed into a lush green paradise. If you played the last adventure, the green spots in the Wilds is how the area used to look in the past. I guarantee if the community was given a choice to revive or kill the Wilds they would choose to make it beautiful again.

  • Something they pulled off really well is rising content

potc tall tale, the end of the veil voyage

they could have a frozen voyage that rises for people which can easily be explained in a fantasy game and wouldn't interfere with the islands people are attached to

I think frozen content of some form when designed as adventure content is a needle mover for casual players, newer players, and players that just enjoy prettier content

add ice fishing to the rising content so people can fish for something new

  • @wolfmanbush In "Hunter Call Update" is the a list of a new types of fish for fishing and general idea for Hunter Calls update. And in "Part 1: Pirates of Caribbean Tall Tales 2" is idea to add it as a part for tall tale, it's poorly written however, in my opinion, therefore I am planning to rewrite it when I will have a better idea or with proper explanation, I just feel that it missing something. If you interested, I invite you to have a look and write your opinion. I did get your point. I like it. But, I also like it as the idea I had presented.

  • @burnbacon Maybe matey, but I think times had changed, and who knows what the horizon will bring us tomorrow

  • Ice zone. Ugh. Ain’t happening, it’s the Caribbean, end of story.

  • We could have SLEDS you load the ship up on, and the PETS could pull the sled across the ice.

  • @foambreaker I see. But, maybe instead of ship, sleds would be used to transport crates, commodities, treasures ( chests, skulls, etc) and pets?

  • @selgewick The devs have said in the past they wouldn't be doing a frost area.

  • @burnbacon Genuinely curious. Why can't they?

  • @sisucaribou said in Arctic Desert:

@burnbacon Genuinely curious. Why can't they?

    Two major reasons.

    1. Six ships seems to be the safe limit for server stability. They might be able to do more, but it creates more strain on the system. Everything these days is a question what more can they squeeze out of the systems
    2. They believe that the ship density on the map is about right for the size of the map. Increasing the map size from where it is at will lower the ship interactions. To keep ship interactions where they are, they'd need to increase the number of ships for a larger map, but....see #1.
  • @tybald thank you that makes sense

  • @captain-coel Actually, the information you are based on is out of date, I recommmend you check it again. Because from the source I found, there was few changes made/said which may have made this statement incorrect. Unless, I may be wrong. But again, check your statement again, it may be incorrect now.

  • @selgewick It was Mike Chapman who said it wouldn't happen. I'll see if I can find the exact quote.

Plus they have made it clear they can't make the map bigger.

    edit for the tweet

Also if you have more recent info, I'd gladly see it :)

  • @burnbacon Turn existing islands into Ice wastes, use Ancient Magic as an excuse or smth. Take a poll see what islands or regions the community wants gone. It would be easy to explain why a region changed because of magic.

  • @captain-coel There was a pirate, Ghost Admiral, he posted a video 9 days ago, approximately. Where he talked about new updates and future teases. In one of the teases he mentioned about possibility of new regions, in which he showed the screenshot of Mike Chapman's response about possibility of new regions being added ( I don't have screenshot, but here is the response). "Mike Chapman: Absolutely. [With the volcanic biome The Devil's Roar] it was very much that idea where you go there, you get more reward, but you're taking more risk. I think we have done that now. So another one like that, I don't think we'd go there creatively. You don't want it to just be a palette swap. There's experiences in Sea of Thieves that you could probably only deliver by adding a new kind of biome, giving you a whole new type of world experience. But I think our focus would be on how we can bring something to the game that you haven't seen before. Beyond it just being snowing out. Like, you'd have to fundamentally kind of mix up the gameplay. And that's what we'd be looking for. So I think it'd be relatively simple to add a new biome if it was just a palette swap, but I think it [needs] the gameplay and mechanics to support it. That would be our focus. ".

  • @tangotime8578 I like the idea about Ancient Magic. But turning already existing island into winter versions of themselves, doesn't sound good. I think better create a new region with different islands, but with explanation that this islands is Ice Wastes due to Ancient Magic or Result of it or Laxk of one. But, thank you for your response.

  • @tesiccl I would recommend to check Pirate's of Carribean: At World's End. Ye will see, ye will understand mate.

  • @selgewick No need. You’ve been told by Mike Chapman and multiple people in this post why it isn’t happening :)

  • @tesiccl I wouldn't be so sure. Check the comments above.

  • @selgewick I did, nothing convincing. They cannot extend the map anymore, Rare have said this. The only place any sort of zone can exist is within the sea of the damned due to technical limitations.

  • @tesiccl Okay. As long as you support this thought and that makes you happy. Thank you for your comment by the way. It is always great to hear different opinions.

  • I dont like vision of SoT changing into patchwork of difrent biomes :(

    So, meh, nope.

  • @burnbacon They do have the ability to if they wanted to and enough people wanted it to be extended. the main issue is player count, they could easily convert some of the map for like a seasonal event.

Stop being a Debby Downer :)

  • @atomfarticle

@burnbacon They do have the ability to if they wanted to and enough people wanted it to be extended. the main issue is player count, they could easily convert some of the map for like a seasonal event.

    Unfortunately entirely wrong.

  • How, its the devs game, they have the power to do anything. They can delete all of the islands if they wanted to.

  • @atomfarticle Sorry, I did not completely understand your comment. Can you explain what do you mean by "How.."or, in another words, tell more about your opinion with more specific words/terms. Thank you.
